  • Any deals on wifi curtains happening soon?

    • I think they come after the wi-fi taps. Very soon!

    • dear,we can set coupon for u

      • +1 for roller blind tube motors 👍

      • That would be great. I need two sets but just need to measure the length tomorrow.

Do the wifi motors use tuya esp 8266 compatible chips?

  • What is ‘tuya standard zigbee device’ ?

Is tuya a company/brand that produces smart devices using zigbee protocol?

    • +1

Tuya makes white label devices and apps. Arlec's Grid Connect system (available at Bunnings) is a Tuya-based system for example. Any Tuya device should work with any Tuya partner's apps and devices.

I think Zigbee is the wifi communications protocol - it is low-power so it can be used on battery operated equipment as opposed to "normal" wifi that would chew through batteries very quickly. It is much better than Bluetooth because it has better range (I think up to 100m in unobstructed conditions) and uses less power (and in my experience is a lot more stable than BT for this sort of thing)

Tuya is the company that makes the firmware to control the gear and has the app that uses Zigbee protocols to send the software commands and receive status reports. As @jaydisc has mentioned companies like Arlec reskin the Tuya app to make it look like theirs. I'm using Tuya to run an Arlec smart-plug through Home Assistant.

Another version of the Tuya app is SmartLife…… all the same under the hood. You will find a lot of "smart" equipment runs on Tuya, so you can link them to the company's app, or just use the Tuya app.

I think Zigbee is the wifi communications protocol

Zigbee and WiFi are entirely separate.

Tuya is the company that makes the firmware to control the gear

Tuya make the hardware and the firmware.

        • Yes - I was trying to keep it simple, hence the reference to “normal”. Wifi and Zigbee are both forms of wireless communication generally operating in the 2.4ghz band. (There are other bands)

          • @Public21: Yep, in the 800-1000MHz range for NA and EU.

  • Hey OP

Will this work with the roller blind motor: M515EGBZTN

This blind motor is Zigbee but seems to require a separate hub.

    • I’m pretty sure that’s exactly the kind of device this hub is for.

I have that same device, but I control it from a deCONZ hub. I didn’t want multiple hubs, so I bought one to rule them all.

      • Tks - what brand did you get?

I have three Zemismart blinds already but I got the ones where each motor has a separate wifi dongle, that then communicates with the blind via RF at 915mhz. I wish I had got the Zigbee version so I could have just one base unit, not three. Unfortunately there are no hubs or bridges that operate at 915mhz.

        Next time….

  • How does this compare to Aqara M1S hub? In another word, how does the tuya system compare to Aqara eco system for HomeKit control? Thanks

    • That’s a big, fat, “it depends”. I avoid Tuya because it’s all cloud based*. If your internet is down you can’t control your devices.

      * There are always to set up “Tuya LAN” access, which bypasses this, but it isn’t for the feint of heart. There are also ways to flash Tuya firmware with firmware that bypasses this requirement (Tasmota?), which is even lesser for the feint of heart.

I don’t believe the Aqara hub has the same cloud requirement.

I recommend getting a 3rd party hub that can control lots of Zigbee stuff, eg deCONZ, Hubitat, etc. Then you can use all the Aqara, Tuya (Zigbee), Hue, Ikea, etc. all from one hub, with no cloud access required.

      • deCONZ is the (inferior) software for controlling a Conbee 2 which is the actual hardware you'll need.

        • If HomeKit is the destination, there are limited paths to hardware, with varying device support and complexity.

At my time of purchase, there was deCONZ and Zigbee2Mqtt (both requiring Homebridge). Since deCONZ was made by the makers of Conbee, that kind of integration appealed to me. At that time, Conbee support in Z2M was experimental. I presume you’re referring to Z2M as the superior solution?

          • @jaydisc: I suppose that depends what you're actually running it on. If you're using HA though then ZHA is the superior solution.
