Update on 10th Nov:
There is a pop up on the page now explaining why some addresses are not eligible

Why can’t I get 5G Home Internet yet?
Telstra 5G Home Internet may not yet be in your area.
You may be in a 5G coverage area, but your address may not be getting the minimum download speed of 50Mbps required for 5G Home Internet to work.
The good news is we’re expanding our 5G home internet capacity all the time, so please check your address again soon.

  • Ozexperts: Is this cgnat? I need a ipv4 or IPv6 (dynamic or fixed doesn't matter).

    • 5G = CG-NAT.

      • +1

Not sure why u got negged Twix.

According to my research too, all 5G is currently CG-NAT

        • Maybe someone accidentally pressed the wrong button or are misinformed. 4G and 5G mobile networks are using CG-NAT.

  • Does anyone use this with playstation? I tried using my 5G phone for a while and had issues connecting with chat and various other things, i think because of cgnat that people mention above, whatever that is…

    • This is no different. 5G with CG-NAT breaks online gaming.

      • thanks
damn. I ordered it anyway will just cancel if it doesn't work.
Does this also apply to TPG/Optus/others? My NBN drop outs are ridiculous

        • There are ISPs on the nbn that use CG-NAT and ISPs that don't. TPG and Optus don't use CG-NAT.

Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC, FW?

          • @Twix: It's fttn. The NBN connection doesn't use cgnat but I had tried 5g through my phone and it was fast but Playstation was sad

            • @dnutter: Check here for FTTN locations that nbn are changing to FTTP if you ask for it.

  • Is this post paid? Credit check?

    • Seems to be. In the Telstra shop I was asked all the usual Qs, like job, how many years, did I own the house, etc. But I have not been a Telstra customer for a long time, so if you have something recent, they might by-pass that.
Yep, seems to be post paid

  • Seems impossible and unobtainable to actually buy. Yet they'll sell you the 400gb 5GB with 1Mbit shaping no worries.

    Very annoying.

    • Agree, should be tagged [targetted] as most people can’t get it at their address, even where people are getting high speed 5G through other means (eg telstra 5G 400gb modem, Vodafone 5G Nokia, Optus 5G Nokia).

      • I talked to a rep and we found an address near my closest tower and used that address as the 'service address' to be able to sign-up and then we changed the postal address to my place, so the modem comes here.

        • But an ID/ credit check would show your current address though?

          • @Buy2Much: Perhaps as this is a month to month no lock in contract they only do a soft/internal check to see if you currently owe them any money or not. It does say 'we MAY perform a credit check'.
            Not sure.

  • Last month I used 13tb on Optus 5g unlimited. Lots of torrenting and fetch tv 4k streaming. The Optus rep called me to check if everything is ok coz my data usage is quite high!

    • Damn 13tb! What 4K content you been streaming to use up that much data??

  • Less than 100m from the tower. Not eligible? Was going to sign up

  • +1

I think this is one of the best internet deal on the market now. (if you are eligible)

unless you are a heavy heavy gamer or download bluray every day, this deal brings much better value in terms of price and speed.

    • If you had 4 gamers playing COD 24/7 you still won't hit 1TB.
Unless COD (for example) had a 250gb update and all 4 downloaded the update that's when you hit 1TB.
BUT they could still game after 1TB because it's not capped. Just drops to 25mbps, which is still fine for 1-2 players simultaneously.

  • Just ordered but on further research it doesn’t support port forwarding so looks like it will be returned before the free month ends.

I guess there is no other way to remotely view security cameras without being able to port forward?

    • +1

Have a look at ngrok my bro. I've used it successfully for my remote access needs but it costs money if you want to have a static IP otherwise the free version gives you a random one to trial it out.

    • +1

Look at Tailscale, that’s what I am using with Telstra 5g to access my services hosted on my private network synology , plex etc, synology surveillance stations etc

      And it’s free

      • Thanks for the info. I’m not that technically minded so I’ll see how I go during the one month trial and I’ll have a go setting it uo

  • Is it better to get this and cancel the NBN Plan?

    • Probably, but not yet. I just ordered it and expect the modem to be delivered next week. Because the first month is free I am going to run it back-to-back with my NBN 100/20 (which is paid up to Dec 1) to see how it stacks up. Loser gets the bin!

      • +2

        Please keep us updated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • me too. I wanna see how the speed and stability from the 5G to the 250/25 nbn.

however my superloop is consistently down from every 2 weeks. need to replace them anyway. (In Melb South east)

    • I did this. Can’t be more happier

  • want this for the holiday house, but when i enter address it says not available. my other place is available, what are the chances of just ordering it for the other place then taking it to the holiday house and it working? the town where the holiday house is has 5g coverage.

    • +2

Read their FAQ, you cannot use it outside the address it is requested for, it's locked to your homes location.

  • I'm approximately 250mtrs line of site to the Optus, Telstra and Vodafone 5G cells, all on the same building as confirmed by rfnsa.com.au and Telstra's site says "5G Home Internet is not available at your address" I assume their tower is maxed out at capacity. One of the issues with wireless internet I guess.

  • Does the 1tb data limit include uploads as well?

    • Yes

  • Address didn't work even though I am in a 5G area. So I tried the address of the house literally next to the tower (10m maybe). Also didn't work.

  • Weird, I tested my address and it says 5G is unavailable, but when running Internet test my iPhone with Boost sim card I have >180Mbps

    • +3

Simple answer is that Boost is 4G (I also get 160mbps on my boost mobile for reference).

      • +1

        Thanks mate

  • All my neighbour addressee can get it but not me, most likely it's because I am Telstra 4g wireless customer already.

    • +2

Sign up using neighbours address. During sign up change postal address to your house.
The plan is locked to tower not address.

  • I'm eligible for the 5g home internet and I want to know if I can have share data for my phone. Which sim card plan should I buy to have access to shared data?
I was with telstra last week paying $65/m for 180gb but moved to optus for $65/m with 500gb but optus service is so bad that I'll need to get back to telstra.
    Any advice please
    Thanks

    • Shared data is not allowed with this plan.

  • Interesting how Telstra stated that 5G will bring 1ms pings yet their FAQ says if you are after single-digit pings then 5G isn't for you. Is this because they aren't using the SA network yet?

    • I think they are talking about future state in FAQs.
5G WILL bring 1ms pings, but that will be mmwave which is still very much in its infancy.

  • Anyone tried to order the 5G plan using your neighbor's address (with consent) and have it delivered to your house? Will the setup be okay? Thanks. My address is not eligible but 2 houses away is okay.

    • should be fine

      • The only issues I could see is that my neighbour would not be able to join for this plan for his house as long as I am using the 5G plan!

    • It is one month free anyway.
You can return it if it is not working well enough.

  • +3

    received mine yesterday.
I am so amazed that it even makes my google hub max works/respond much faster.

    • What speeds are you getting at various times of the day?

      • I got 380Mb down 42up last night
Not sure whether I am getting various speed during the day

      • +1

I got mine today and speed is around 450/60 Up/Down.

        Bye nbn

    • Also what was your previous connection?

      • I am still with iiNet. I am going to cancel it soon .

        • +1

Was on the phone with IINet this morning and there customer care line is busy cause too much of cancelling request. 🤣

  • 5G - no thanks, I don't want COVID..
    puts on tin foil hat

  • Thanks OP. received moderm today,I got 451.9 down 58 up.

    • Cheers, I’m jealous

  • I will go to sign this offer instore tomorrow see if it can pick 5g modern straightaway

    • I asked the same thing when I signed up in-store and was told that they have to be sent from a single source. I am waiting for mine to arrive (in Melbourne) from Sydney.
But it may be different where you are

      • I went to one of my local stores and they asked me to sign it through online chat and crazy Telstra service ..

  • +1

Hey guys, I have Telstra 5g and TPG NBN running parallelly at the moment, agreed that Telstra 5g is like 10x faster in terms of the download speed when it works, but do u feel it is unstable? I noticed that my 5g wifi can drop like 3-5x a day while my TPG NBN barely drops though it is slower download speed..

    Thanks!

    • +1

Same here, my 5g speed dropped for a few times today. The download speed now has drop to around 50m since 11pm.

      • Mine too, dropped to 50mbsish ant 10-15 mins ago.. I think I can live with occasional drop in speed, what annoying is when the connection dropped completely.. I noticed that when I was staring at “connecting” status on my whatsapp for like 30 seconds and have to fall back to mobile 5g before the message got sent..

Still “in between” of switching to 5g or stick with my slower but stable NBN.. :(

    • You must be on fttp/fttc :)
I am on HFC, so 5g is much faster for me.
For fttp, it makes sense it is more stable than 5g, especially when the weather is not good.

  • Just got mine. Oh my jeez coming from 50mbps fttn for $75 a month to 300-450mbps for 10 dollars extra wow! Will be testing it over the next month but for 4K streaming and working from home I think it will be great

  • got mine as well. Speed wise is much faster than my superloop 250mb plan.

However, I do agree the 5g is not as stable as the NBN in my area. Might need to see how it goes in the daytime.

    • I tried to contact Telstra and let them know that my connection is unstable.. they came back saying that it is because my order was not “completed” yet from their end and I am running on “backup”..

I am sceptic that the above is the problem, however it is true that my home internet service has not appeared in my telstra app when I logon, have u tried logon to my telstra and are u able to see the “home internet” under services section?

I guess I will give it a go for another few weeks and see if the above is true..

      • hi mate, same here. nothing shows up in my Telstra account yet.

it's weird that everytime i want to do a speedtest from this 5G modem and it keeps searching for 30 secs and then it run the test. With NBN, you just click and it would run it very much instantly.

However, I think browsing website and video watching is very good so far…. we will keep monitoring and see if that is really worth it.

P.S I will connect my mesh later and see if that helps in terms of stability in my house.

        • +1

well, similar issue here, one thing that is kinda annoying is I use my spotify app in mobile to choose the song I want to play in my desktop, with the old NBN modem I can do that as long as my phone is connected to the same wifi, but for some reason this 5g modem won't allow me to do it, but this probably is something to do with the modem security settings rather than the internet connection, will need to do some more research on this.

Anyway, will keep monitor my speed and connection issue for the next few weeks, hopefully my "Home Internet" services show up on my telstra account soon, so that I can rule out that possibility being an issue or not. will keep you updated on how I go.. :)

          Thanks!

        • @charliechao, do you have an update for how it went once connected to your mesh wifi? Also, mind telling me which mesh you use?

          • @MrFizz: Hi Fizz,

Yes, I connect to my Netgear RBK23 mesh wifi.

Generally speaking, the speed is much faster than the NBN. However, I think stability is kind of debatable with this 5G network.

I use WhatsApp and LINE chat with NBN and they are fast and stable. But when I change it to 5G mesh, it is kind of hard to connect to their server or somehow and it drops off from time to time. I tried it without mesh and the result is the same.

I do think the 5G coverage/signal issue is the killer as the modem itself is probably trying very hard to search and get a signal from the tower.

I will keep monitoring the stability for the next few weeks but if there isn't any improvement, I might change it back to NBN as stability is much important for me than the speed.

        • Quick update, my 5g home internet is finally attached to my Telstra account (After almost 2 weeks ordeal!), surprisingly everything working like a charm after the service appear on my account, no more drop outs, spotify casting, watsapp working perfectly, I am seriously considering ditching TPG NBN.. Hope your services improved too when your services attached to your account. :)

          Thanks!

      • Telstra 5G Home Internet Plan shows under services in my Telstra app since yesterday, but connection is still unstable.

        • That's a shame! Really happy with the speed but if I have to choose between speed vs stability, I have to choose stability. :(

Anyway, I will give it a go for 1-2 more weeks and if it is still continue to be unstable, I think I will just go back to NBN and discontinue my Telstra services.

          Thanks for the update!

          • @Pol4rbe4r: how far from yours to the tower? i just got it yesterday, mine is 550m away. I left next to Windows higher ground so will see how it goes next couple of day because ABB is very stable and fast

            • @BlackorRed: @V13tbargain I just checked on Telstra website (https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage) and I am within the 5 g coverage, but not sure how to pinpoint the closest telstra tower to my place. Do you have a link that list all Telstra 5g tower within Sydney Metro Area?

              • @Pol4rbe4r: you can check from here to see how far you are from the tower https://www.rfnsa.com.au/
Did you have 2 antennas included in the box? I didn't have it in mine so not sure if the modem has 2 antennas but I can see 2 antenna ports behind the modem

                • @BlackorRed: @V13tbargain I just had 1 antenna I think, also I am only 700 meters from the nearest Telstra 5g tower.

Having said that I still have no luck of getting "Home Internet Services" into my account, one thing I notice is that the connection drop off usually when I try to connect to wifi from an app on my phone (i.e. watsapp, ANZ, Spotify, etc), but once you're connected you are fine. Connection to a webpage in PC seems to have less problem though. Although, I have no connection issue whatsoever with NBN which is strange..

                  Thanks!

  • Going to share my experiences with the services as I just plugged in mine today.
    So far not impressed.
I switch from HFC NBN to 5G Telstra Interent.
I'm currently 200meteres from the nearest 5G tower.

    At 4pm I'm getting 100mbps down and 100mbps up
Ping in video games have taken a hit. On nbn I was getting 30ms, on 5g I'm getting 40ms.
No packets are being lost from 100 sent to the modem.

I'm going to monitor it to see if it improves, otherwise, I'll probably return it.
It's curious because I'm so close to the tower, but who knows.

Edit: In hinesight, this is indicitive of throttle, so I'm curious if the service is being throttled during peak traffic. I have nothing to base this claim though, it just seems odd both upload and download are sitting at 100mbps

    FINAL EDIT:
    Nevermind, I'm getting 600 - 700Mbps Download and 85 Upload.
It was my ethernet cable that was throttling it lol!
    Ping is sitting at 36~

    • +1

      /facepalm

      • I shall leave my comment as a cautionary tale for people to check their ethernet cables.

        • are you connecting your mesh WiFi to the modem? I'm using deco M5 but my connection only 320mb/s but other unit only max 120mbps. I'm using cat8 lan called bought from Amazon

          • @BlackorRed: I'm not using any mesh wifi nodes sorry. I was previously using a very long cat7 lan cable across the room.
I decided to troubleshoot it, and just get a small ethernet cable and place the router beside me, and now I'm getting tremoundous speeds.

I'm no tech expert, but if my experience is anything to go by, see if upgrading/changing your cables will make a difference. If not, then it's probably an unavoidable speed cap by using the mesh wifi nodes.

            • @KikisBread: thanks, I also connected directly to the modem and tested speed which also the same result as 320mb/s so I guess this is it for me. It is faster than ABB for sure, so far signals are stable, I'm 550m from the tower

  • Has anyone attached an external roof mounted antenna? Might help with reliability.

    • Are the antenna ports on the modem even wired? Are the ports even for 5G? They seem to be a standard wifi antenna fitting.

  • +1

OK, here is a review, based on coming up to a week in with this service. Melbourne, E burbs, 210m to the nearest tower, with line of sight and modem/router positioned right next to a window and facing that way.
Best down speed I have seen is 348mbps (around 11am). Worst is 55mbps (around 8pm).
Up speeds seem to be locked around 99-100, which makes me wonder whether the Speedtest app is limited to that.
No dropouts but, one of the first things I did was change the usual Telstra letter-number password jumble to something easier to remember/harder to hack. On the first morning there was no service when I got up and it had reset itself to the Telstra login/password, for no apparent reason. I reprogrammed my login/password, no problem since.
One freeze for 3sec while I was watching Kayo and two family members were doing other stuff, no other problems.
Comparison is with HFC NBN, 100/20, using an Apple Airport Extreme Gen 6 router.
Is it faster? Yes. Lots of fun to see the big numbers come up.
Is it more reliable? Also yes, I had the NBN drop out in the recent Melbourne storms, for 1.5 days, but no other problems to note.
Better value? Still on an introductory 6 month deal with NBN, so I am $16pm worse off, though the first month is free.
    NBN 6 months = $414, T 5G 6 months = $425.
Main problem is, I cannot get the login for the Telstra account to work, or on the app. Chat and phones sessions with Telstra and even a visit to a T shop have not fixed the problem. I have never had similar with other providers, going all the way back to IDSL+, 4G internet or NBN. Frustrating.
Will I keep it? I have not decided yet. I like the speed and can see the clear value offer, but the peripheral problems are a bit of a downer.
Hope this is useful to my fellow OzB speed freaks.

    • I had the same issue with the no service did hard reset and was ok after that. I got 390mbps as the fastest using fast.com speed test.
Pings range from 15 to 50. I also hooked it up to my mesh (old google wifi) and it was slower only ~150-200mpbs so ditched that just using the modems wifi. I got some bad speedtests but i think it was from the speedtest app.

    • A follow-up to this;
I sent it back. Happy with the product itself — the modem and router worked fine, no drop-outs to speak of, ran as fast as advertised.
But was never happy with the Telstra service, or lack thereof. No one seemed to be able to solve the login problems (in spite of my confirming the details they kept asking for) until I was literally standing at the counter, handing the modem back.
Have dealt with Optus and Voda, and others (Vaya, Amaysim) and never had anything close to such a messy situation. If you are an established customer, may not happen to you. But I have moved on

  • Ok, so I got it.
    They are SMA antenna ports.

    270mbps without antennas
    55mbps with antennas plugged in…

    Makes no sense!

    • What antennas did you buy?

      • I have multiple for testing.
        3dbs, 6dbs, mimos, even the Poynting 5G

The 5G frequency in my area is 3.6GHz (just like most of Australia) I know ts9 only goes to 3GHz so that why I wanted to test this modem as it has SMA, which I thought goes to like 6 or 8GHz…
        Still no dice.

        • Pretty sure it's reverting to 4G signal whenever I plug in antennas, thus the speed drop.
Next step to see if I can turn off 4G, but I doubt that as I believe most 5G towers still use 4G as the 'key' to 5G connection.

        • Damn. I was looking at the Poynting 5G antenna. I have both 850MHz and 3500MHz frequencies in my area.

  • I am right next to the Telstra 5G tower, line of site, 250 meters away, get full 5 bars 5G indoors, but their Telstra site says Telstra Home 5G not available at my address.
