It's hard to take most horror seriously, but you don't have to. Comedy horror like Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Zombeavers being some that I enjoyed.

When I was a kid it was The Birds but when I grew up The Blair Witch Project has been the only movie that gave me the creeps.
Not a movie but anyone remember the TV show "The Extraordinary". No YouTube back then so some of this stuff freaked me out since it was based on "true" stories.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an exceptional horror film. Unfortunately the million remakes somewhat besmirched the name but that is quite common in the genre.
Actually watching the airplane accident investigation shows is a tad horror story. Based on real life incidents.

Just not interested in gore, suffering, misery. It’s generally some psychopath torturing and/or murdering people. For some reason as a young person I found that interesting. As an adult I think why would I want to watch that horror - ie something horrible. No criticism of those who do like it though.
I feel the same way about the misery and suffering. I personally avoid films that I think will go down that path (films that take themselves seriously and heavily sell themselves on the gore/torture aspects). Despite this, horror is one of the genres that I watch most because there are so many that don't fall into that category. The genre has films that have some amazing effects, imagination, art direction, soundtracks, etc.

Not horrifying, just given the choice of watching people being scared, tortured and murdered vs not, I prefer not. Each to their own.

It's unpopular as it is wrong, and no just because it is your opinion doesn't make it less wrong. Horror movie is defined as a movie that is intended to scare/frighten, it does not need to involve the supernatural.

Probably John Carpenter's The Thing. I'm not one who picks favourites easily, and there are many others that I think of highly, but that one changed my life and broke my fear of horror films. Honorable mentions include the original Nightmare on Elm Street (most genius slasher ever conceived imo), Noroi: The Curse (interesting take on found footage), Videodrome, Suspiria (original, for the visuals).
As for your opinion of slashers not being horror, I don't see how the antagonists being human discounts them from being horror. Horror films do not inherently have to be supernatural. Furthermore, there are many slasher films that have inhuman/supernatural villains, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, any Friday the 13th from 6 onwards, Halloween from 6 onwards, etc. Also, Saw isn't even a slasher.

"In the Mouth of Madness" hands down. It was THE horror movie I have seen as a young teenager, which made me fall in love in the genre.
We would often joke with mates for years after, while camping in the woods, about encountering a bike raider in the middle of the night during a booze run, who would claim they would "not let him out".
Imagine driving down the road, pitch black at night, and all of a sudden, the dividing line in the road just vanishes under your headlights.
Yes! I remember picking this up at blockbuster as a kid because it had Sam Neil in it and I loved Jurassic Park and it blew my young mind. Love this film. Carpenter made some amazing movies.

Unfortunately for me, ITS MY LIFE (sort of) at times
Dawn of the Dead (1978). Alternatively horrifying and hilarious. First movie to not only take zombies well out of the graveyard, but to give us the zombie apocalypse scenario. Your Walking Deads and what have you all ride on this masterpiece's shoulders. Also, a hell of a lot of action and gore for the era (pre-CGI). Must be close to 100 headshots in this relatively low budget movie which is just insane when you think about it.
