What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

I know Australia is not a big fan of Halloween, especially Trick or Treat, but surely you will watch a horror movie or two.

Hereditary is one of the best and is re-watchable.

Unpopular opinion, slasher movies, like Scream or Saw, are not horror movies. The antagonists are humans. Also, Casper and Ghost are not horror movies even though there are ghosts in tnem.

Sorry OP, but your definition of what's horror, has been overuled by the Ozbargain mob.

In saying that, I will say:

    Brain-dead
    Event Horizon
    The Lost Boys
    The Blob (80s)
    Hellraiser

Horror movies don't need to be supernatural or extraterrestrial to count.
Wolf creek is a horror movie but the antagonist is human

It's hard to take most horror seriously, but you don't have to. Comedy horror like Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Zombeavers being some that I enjoyed.

    • They're comedies.

      • Horror/comedy according to Google. Other people are listing thrillers. The OP seems to think horror only means supernatural.

  • When I was a kid it was The Birds but when I grew up The Blair Witch Project has been the only movie that gave me the creeps.

  • +1

Not a movie but anyone remember the TV show "The Extraordinary". No YouTube back then so some of this stuff freaked me out since it was based on "true" stories.

    • I loved 'The Extraordinary'! Now i'm going to have to try and track that down!

  • +2

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an exceptional horror film. Unfortunately the million remakes somewhat besmirched the name but that is quite common in the genre.

  • Actually watching the airplane accident investigation shows is a tad horror story. Based on real life incidents.

That really scary episode of the Twilight Zone with the gremlin outside on the wing…

    • +1

Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (with William Shatner)

    • +1

If it's a 'gremlin', then it would be the remake:-
Twilight Zone: The Movie - Segment four (Nightmare at 20,000 feet) with John Lithgow.

    • Yeah that was very well done, shivers … esp when it starts tearing apart the engine / wing!

  • +1

    David Lynch's 'Eraserhead' (1977)

  • As a teen I loved horror etc, then as an adult I actually realised what it really meant, I have no interest anymore.

    • What?

      • +1

Just not interested in gore, suffering, misery. It’s generally some psychopath torturing and/or murdering people. For some reason as a young person I found that interesting. As an adult I think why would I want to watch that horror - ie something horrible. No criticism of those who do like it though.

        • I feel the same way about the misery and suffering. I personally avoid films that I think will go down that path (films that take themselves seriously and heavily sell themselves on the gore/torture aspects). Despite this, horror is one of the genres that I watch most because there are so many that don't fall into that category. The genre has films that have some amazing effects, imagination, art direction, soundtracks, etc.

    • I'm sorry to hear that. It must be horrifying.

      • +2

Not horrifying, just given the choice of watching people being scared, tortured and murdered vs not, I prefer not. Each to their own.

  • +2

    Residential Evil: Housing Market

Demons with the cinema that's blocked in and the movie comes off the screen.

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit

    Werewolf (tv series)

    Poltergeist

    Halloween 4

    Birds

    Cujo

    Bats

Stephen King Creep Show The Raft

What's your favourite scary movie, literally Scream

    • +1

That's surprising. Demons is quite obscure movie. I especially enjoyed this part when the Accept song was playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7n-T_gSSQQ

      My two cents:

      The others 2001

Last house on the left 2009

      Fly 1 & 2

      Triangle 2009

Final destination 4 is not bad

      Ghost ship 2002

      • Forgot about that. I like the fact that Dead Rising has a motorbike and a cinema section. The cover scared me as a kid in the video store. The premise of no escape and ending too.

  • +2

Aladdin the one with will Smith… absolutely terrifying.

It's unpopular as it is wrong, and no just because it is your opinion doesn't make it less wrong. Horror movie is defined as a movie that is intended to scare/frighten, it does not need to involve the supernatural.

Favourites are alien, omen(original, scared crap out of me as a kid), jaws.

    The Shining
    Get Out

Event Horizon, granted I was a kid at the time but it's the only movie that ever gave me genuine terror

Probably John Carpenter's The Thing. I'm not one who picks favourites easily, and there are many others that I think of highly, but that one changed my life and broke my fear of horror films. Honorable mentions include the original Nightmare on Elm Street (most genius slasher ever conceived imo), Noroi: The Curse (interesting take on found footage), Videodrome, Suspiria (original, for the visuals).

As for your opinion of slashers not being horror, I don't see how the antagonists being human discounts them from being horror. Horror films do not inherently have to be supernatural. Furthermore, there are many slasher films that have inhuman/supernatural villains, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, any Friday the 13th from 6 onwards, Halloween from 6 onwards, etc. Also, Saw isn't even a slasher.

  • Most Adam Sandler movies

  • The Shining
    Alien

  • When a Stranger Calls. Saw it when I was 14. I refused to answer the phone for a fortnight.

'The call is coming from inside the house…'

  • Not a horror fan but I did always enjoy The Faculty and Event Horizon.

    • Yeah I think event horizon is under appreciated by whirlpool

  • Scary Movie

  • “House on Haunted Hill” (original Vincent Price version)

    Best atmosphere horror I’ve seen.

  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

They Live is considered Sci-fi, but the underlying threat is terrifying. Similar to a zombie flick.

    • Known of the cabinet before but not in English so gave up after 10 minutes. Has the creepy vibes yes

slasher movies are not horror? how very dare you!

Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson is a great newer movie that people might have missed. It's slow and suspenseful but creepy.

  • Get Out

    Drag Me To Hell

drag me to hell was awesome to watch in the cinemas

"In the Mouth of Madness" hands down. It was THE horror movie I have seen as a young teenager, which made me fall in love in the genre.

We would often joke with mates for years after, while camping in the woods, about encountering a bike raider in the middle of the night during a booze run, who would claim they would "not let him out".

Imagine driving down the road, pitch black at night, and all of a sudden, the dividing line in the road just vanishes under your headlights.

    • Yes! I remember picking this up at blockbuster as a kid because it had Sam Neil in it and I loved Jurassic Park and it blew my young mind. Love this film. Carpenter made some amazing movies.

  • +1

The Mist by Steven King. Devastating.

    • Patience, no, believing. Not available in Netflix or Disney

    • Great movie. After seeing it a few times, you realise the crazy god lady and the other guys who held up in the supermarket were actually the smart ones.

  • The Election results - every election…

  • One flew over the cuckoo’s nest

    Kath & Kim.

    • “I want to be effluent”.

  • Anabelle

    Moana and Frozen

  • Mr Vampire series.

  • Some slasher films can be great. I love Halloween (the 1978 and 2018 versions - they go hand in hand) and also the new IT Chapters 1 and 2. Doctor Sleep, Overlord and A Quiet Place are also very good.

  • Tumbbad (incredible movie!)
    Get out
    Insidious

    Sinister

    The descent
    The conjuring
    Shutter Island

    The Boy Behind the Door

    Thinner
    Tommy knockers

The original Freddy movies from the 80s and 90s
    So many more

    • It follows was pretty good, feel like they could have done slightly better with it

  • If someone didn’t recommend then I’ll recommend “The Exorcist” on Amazon prime. Its a show.

  • Idiocracy [2006]

      “They’re here”.

  • Dawn of the Dead

But a legit scary movie is Gone Girl. Ladies can be scary knowing what they’re capable of.

    Your Favourite Horror Movie

Unfortunately for me, ITS MY LIFE (sort of) at times

  • Dawn of the Dead (1978). Alternatively horrifying and hilarious. First movie to not only take zombies well out of the graveyard, but to give us the zombie apocalypse scenario. Your Walking Deads and what have you all ride on this masterpiece's shoulders. Also, a hell of a lot of action and gore for the era (pre-CGI). Must be close to 100 headshots in this relatively low budget movie which is just insane when you think about it.
