looks like a decent occasional use car battery charger for $20.

No, just very low power.
Will be suitable to maintain a battery if your car is sitting in the garage for a month. Would be impractical to charge a flat battery, would take days.
Any reviews?
4.4 out of 5,206 global ratings.
I have one of these. Used for first time last week - does the job, built well.
Also, it comes with an AS plug. Some of the competitor ones on eBay don’t come with an AS insulated plug.
Are they leads with an eye to directly connect to a battery bolt?
This is what is on listing as included:
1*TOPDON TORNADO1200
1*Cable Clamp
1*AC Cable
1*User Manual
It's cheap because it only charges at 1.2 amps.
That explains it
Thanks op. Thats good enough for a car in lockdown.
Hey @robsin08 I noticed you changed the price in the title. I think the code PSEVAS15 should take it down to $21.24 for non eBay plus members.
Oh sorry about that. I was just trying to post the original price without the codes.
No worries at all! Cheers!
Will this be better? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/353673053435?hash=item52588e84fb…
this looks better specs, but the lack of a brand name says to me its a copy/fake?
Thanks for the advice, would avoid the unbranded
If he specs are true, it sas 10a, so yes. But it looks like flimsy junk.
thanks OP, bought
Have one of this, it does the job pretty well.
The cable is a bit thin, but enough for 1.2amp charging.
Really good bang for bucks, especially to keep the car moving while in lockdown.
What I notice though, my ECU got reset after I put the battery back on. So I got rough idle issue that resolved itself after few mins of driving so the ECU can re-learn the settings.
Probably not related to the charger itself, but just my experience.
Does the instructions tell you to disconnect the battery? I am wondering if you could charge the battery while connected to the car terminals.
You can do both ways. But I prefer to fully disconnect it and charge it, in case the charger do something dodgy to the battery.
I didn't expect that issue to happen, as I replace battery multiple times in the past and never had any issue.
Disconnecting the battery every time you want to charge it makes the job way too difficult.
This sort of charger is often used for cars that are stored or used infrequently. Having to disconnect the battery each time with this one when the more expensive ones are specifically designed to be left on 24x7 for months would make this a no go.
Just curious whats the advantage of these over those jump start batteries. is it worth getting both?
Apples and oranges
Different purposes. These keep your battery full and reduces chances of destroying your battery by latting it go flat.
Jump starters will start most cars when low/flat batteries in emergency. At this low price, just get one of each and have peace
of mind. Unless you drive your car often, especially in winter, this charger will pay for itself if used when needed to extend
car battery life. Just remember to occasionally charge the jump sarter every few months and keep it in coolest part of car.
Thanks for the awesome advice. Will get 1 then
Unless you rarely start your car and do short trips at night with lights on ( will slow down charging of battery ),
Or/and your system has a high draw stand by rate or is faulty/leaching/losing power, charging it for 24-48hrs
every week or two should do the job, but the more you keep your battery full the better.
As for the emergency jump starter I like to keep one ( my oldest good one , as I keep newest in garage ready
for camping trips ) in the car at all times charged between 60-100% where possible ( I try to remember ), and
best of all because you use a good car battery and trickle charger where needed, you mainly use the jump starter
for other people in need which makes it feel even better for me lol.
Jump starting a flat battery then driving for an hour is not enough to charge it properly.
Unless you have long daily commutes you will have ongoing problems and a shorter battery life.
Charging a flat or even low battery needs a battery charger.
Bought one. Hopefully this model comes with Force Mode option (charge dead batteries).
1.2A max charge current is terrible. Will take forever even to top up a battery, let alone charge a flat one.
Wouldn't recommend this at all.
This is a better charger and occasionally goes on sale for about $40 delivered. I got it when it was on sale
https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/certa-9-smart-battery-charger/
Not everyone is looking for a charger that will top it up in an hour or two.
This would be more than sufficient to stick on your car that isnt being used during lockdown or on some smaller 12v batteries
Correct. Different horses for courses.
You miss the point.
This is a battery charge maintainer for cars bikes boats ride on mowers that don't get used very often.
Maintaining a battery at full charge (except lithium) will extend its life considerably.
For those looking at alternatives the small Noco GENIUS1AU comes up on special regularly at about $40 and is a brilliant little charger that also does lithium. As a bonus it also has force mode to charge batteries from dead which most smart chargers will not do.
Looks like a decent unit.
How do you know when they come on sale on ebay, keep checking prices?
There was one recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654103
I bought the NOCO GENIUS5AU from the above deal.
I’m still contemplating if I should get this one also as a spare.
@Olliesh: Right. An Amazon deal with great reviews. Thought not ebay as no sellers are ebay plus haha.
As you did not pay high price, I would wait for a deal on a larger/faster charger to compliment/varie useage.
If you use your current charger carefully, nothing should go wrong for while and cheapenough to buy again.
I have a $500 Ctek 20Amp charger but I wouldnt leave that connected to the car 24/7, it can do it but youre better off sticking a low amp trickle charger to do the job.
True. Slow down wear and tear on a good one like yours to extend life for when you really need that power.
Also unless you have it plugged in to a surge protector, we all know what could happen next…..
They claim their 1.2A charger is "2X faster than ordinary 1A battery chargers"
This isn't how math works.
Better deal here:

If it's too cheap to be true… 🤔?
