The Complete Liveship Traders Trilogy: Ship of Magic, The Mad Ship, Ship of Destiny

'Fantasy as it ought to be written' George R.R. Martin

The Liveship Traders trilogy returns readers to Robin Hobb’s most loved world.

The perilous waters of the Rain River Wilds can only be negotiated by sentient liveships made of Wizardwood, but such a ship is difficult to come by. Rare and valuable, it will quicken only when three family members from successive generations have died on board.

The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening as Althea Vestrit’s dying father is carried on to her deck. Althea waits with both sadness and awe for the ship that she loves more than anything in the world to awaken, only to find that her family have other plans for them both…

Great trilogy by an incredible author. The original Farseer Trilogy is in my opinion the best fantasy trilogy ever written.

    • +2

I agree, I have read and reread the farseer trilogy many times

    • +1

Yep I'd probably agree with that, it's an excellent series.

New readers can definitely jump in here as this is a mostly self-contained arc, but a couple of the reveals might not have the same impact as if you have already read the first trilogy.

I found the ending awfully depressing.

      • ending of the last triology? absolutely broke me. By that last triology Fitz is like an old friend not some character in the book. Robin does an amazing job building a connection to the characters in the books.

          Spoilers!?!?!?!?!?

          • -1

@Adzaman: How is that a spoiler?

            • @garetz: Obviously something happens to Fitz…..

              • @Adzaman: Um, he is the seminal character, of course something happens to him, just like something happens to every main character of every story. What are you even saying was spoiled?

    • Better than The Magician?

      • By Feist? One of my favourite books!

        • The rift war saga. I've read alot of fantasy books, and I think the Magician was the best

      • Is it just one book or a series? I'd be interested to check it out, do you have a link?

It's a series, link is to the Magician

          • @bennos: Cheers will check it out.

you might like the axis trilogy by sara douglass

I couldn't get into this series. Just seemed too slow and boring. Loved the Farseer Trilogy.

      • yes, I prefered all the books that revolved around Fitz and the Fool. I have read all the Livetrader Books but didn't bother with the Rainwilds.

  • Doesn't look like it's on sale?

    • It's normally $37.99….

      • ah thanks, yeah I couldn't see the normal price in the post or on amazon

    better than robin hood ?

Same price on Apple Books also. So probably most/all platforms.

  • +1

Awesome! Have the books in paperback already but this is a great bargain. I'm due for a reread, thanks!

  • +1

One of the best fantasy series I've read, honestly. The pacing, characterization, sense of wonder, etc. are all very good. In my opinion, it's better than the farseer trilogy, mostly for the reason that the farseer trilogy takes a while to get going, while Liveship Traders is strong from the get-go.

    • +3

I still prefer the Farseer Trilogy and then the later Tawny Man and Fitz and the Fool series (to finish it off).

  • +1

My favourite author of all time!

  • +1

I have the first two books from a previous deal. Third one is $14.99 at the moment. Bugger. Almost worth buying the whole trilogy at $7.99 just for the third book. Although, it seems Hobb's books are regularly on sale.

    • Same! I've just started the third book as an audiobook as I was missing the Kindle version and it's $15. I think I'll jump on this to get the missing one.

  • +1

A really great trilogy, I think it even sparked my interest in nautical novels which led me to some great nonfiction like Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

    • If you like nautical books. Patrick O'brian Jack Aubrey books are second to none. Amazing

      • Thanks and wow, it seems the movie Master and Commander was based on those books. I remembered watching that movie several years ago and loved it.

  • +1

I recently finished the series and am struggling to find another author who is as enjoyable to read.

    • +1

plenty out there, although not sure who/what you have already read. Have you read The Tamir Triad (Lynn Flewelling)? Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan), Curse of the Mistwraith (Janny Wurts…..last book in this long-running series is nearly finished) Night Angel Trilogy (Brent Weeks), The Quickening Trilogy (Fiona Mckintosh) Sunrunner series (Melanie Rawn) just to name a few

      • Thanks for those, apart from Robert Jordan I had not heard of those series.

        • +1

oh, and as someone mentioned above….The Riftwar Saga and the others in that whole series by Raymond Feist.

  • already have the physical books, otherwise I would jump at this. Great price.

  • +4

I can't recommend this trilogy enough. Robin Hobb is an amazing author

  • -3

Yeah like that's his real name

    • It's her pseudonym

  • +2

I've already got the hard copies but thoroughly recommend picking up these books in whatever format you can. Amazing author.

  • Should I start reading from this Liveship Traders trilogy or should I start with the Farseer series first? Just wondering if it matters story wise? Thanks

    • +4

IMO Farseer trilogy first. Sets up a lot of little things.

    • +4

      Order of publication

Farseer -> Liveship Traders -> Tawny Man -> Rain Wild -> Fitz and the Fool

    • +2

IIRC this is the order below
      The Farseer Trilogy
      The Liveship Trilogy
      The Tawny Man Trilogy
      The Rainwild Chronicles
      Fitz and Fool Trilogy
edit; Someone beat me to it.

      • Appreciate the feedbacks, thank you all!

A little over a year ago, I had never heard of Robin Hobb. Then this deal popped up and I took a punt and bought all the books except for the Ship of Destiny (third book in the Liveship traders series) which for some reason wasn't part of that sale. I got hooked on the books and ended up getting Ship of Destiny earlier this year since I just had to keep going!

Now I'm reading the third book of the Tawny man trilogy and can't recommend Robin Hobb enough. She is a fantastic writer and this deal is definitely worth it!
