  • For context I paid $750 from JB for my iPad 2 64GB in September 2011 (when we had parity with the USD). So considering the huge increase in processing power, screen quality, and storage this seems a pretty reasonable price.

    • New iPad comes soon. If you're after the hardware improvement.

      Baaaaaa

You do realise that technology has improved during the last decade.

Apple's conditioning of its customer base has obviously improved during the past decade too.

      • Point proven bring on the negs jobsy

Just get a better job so you can afford Apple products. Envy is not an attractive quality in anyone

    • +2

      Technology is deflationary.

So to put it into perspective, if you purchased in 2011 for $750, that is the same as roughly $1500 in todays money.

You get more for less today (but you also get paid less)

      • There is no way inflation has caused 1/2 purchasing power in the past decade.

        Please prove me wrong

        • +2

Yes, your purchasing power has eroded 50% in the last 10 years.

I provided a chart in my original post, check it yourself.

How much did your house/rent cost 10 years ago? What were you getting paid 10 years ago vs today?

CPI is not a measure of financial inflation, only used to make it look like you have more money then you actually do.

          • @croseks: No, purchasing power hasn't eroded by half in 10 years, just government laziness and greed causing overinflated house price. Everything else stays pretty much the same, even the taxi driver and colesworths night fill get paid less.

@lgacb08: Oh boy, you are in for a rough surprise.

              Best of luck.

              • @croseks: Ive lived through enough surprises in my life, thank you. you don't know about purchasing power unless you spent some years of your life under some place seeing your money become paperweight overnight. Everything else is just a number.

            • +1

@lgacb08: Go look up the hidden secrets of money episode 4. If you don't know how currency is created, then you really have no idea what purchasing power really is. People taking out loans against assets is what is inflating the housing market. The M3 money supply expands and this goes to chase other goods in the economy. All of it is inflationary, thereby eroding ones purchasing power.

          • @croseks: Oh I saw your American data.

Perhaps if you care to Google Australian data, you will see it is not as bad as you profess.

Perhaps try this as a fun activity (with its flaws and all)

            https://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/annualDecimal.html

      • Currency in circulation has roughly doubled since 2011 as per your own chart. Would that mean that a halving of purchasing power over the same period assumes 0% real GDP growth over 10 years?

        • If you are playing Monopoly and the banker gives every player with a house/hotel an extra 50% more money (their assets increased in price 50% therefore they can borrow against their equity and buy more things) and you who doesn't own any land or house has to rely on passing go every week (your weekly wages which generally haven't changed over the last 10 years), has your purchasing power gone down or stayed the same?

There is now more money chasing the same amount of land/houses so price of everything has increased, GDP growth has increased also because rents are higher, productivity is higher (there is more transactions going on), fees and taxes are higher, but you still earn the same amount of money everytime you pass go.

I hope that helps to put it into perspective, unless you own assets then GDP growth doesn't affect your purchasing power.

Ah, so that's why they're sitting on $270 Billion of cash and make over $32 Billion of profit every 12 weeks.

these prices are also available at JB Hifi (and possibly other places) for same-day pick-up if that's more your preference and if convenient

Got the ipad air 4 64 gb. After opening and setting up below is the storage without installing 3rd party apps

    9.6gb used out ot 64gb.

    Hope it helps in decisions.

    • +1

It really depending on what you do with it. I had 16gb ipad air for 8 years and I use it for streaming, occasionally read books etc. Never had storage issues, just upgraded to the 64gb recently.

Also at this price, you may as well get the M1 iPad

      • Agree, was only mentioning as some OS take lots of space. Really impressed that ipad consumes very less compared to windows and Android.

  • +8

If you're going to drop $1K on an iPad surely you'd chuck in the extra $100-200 for the M1 Pro to include that 120hz screen?

  • 60hz LCD screen for $1K? lol

    • People don't have an issue paying that much for an iphone with a 60Hz screen (yes, I know 120Hz screens are not available on iPhones).
Apple devices are expensive, but they're of high quality build that will last for many years so it makes sense to buy a better quality device in the first place.

  • We had the Pro for just over 1k yesterday, this is a big downgrade.

    • Where was that at?

  • +1

My hot take: Yes this is a downgrade to a pro, but for the average person it’s a very small downgrade. I own one of these (and my partner has a pro), 90% of the time you’d never even appreciate the difference in power of the pro, and really the only benefits I’d say is worth ponying up the extra for the pro would be the screen refresh (not important to me or my work) and faceID ( the touchid on this model is still good tho). Up until this gen of the air one of the benefits of the pro was the small bezels, but now the air has caught up in that regard. I also prefer the slightly smaller form factor of the air vs the 11inch pro

  • Cheaper at Officeworks by $1

  • What do people do with their ipads? my tablets just sit in the corner collecting dust.

    • I'll take them off your hands then 😜

      • That's what nephews and nieces are for.

        • Then you do have use for them!

    • Allow my children to look after them for you.

      • You'll be surprised how many tablets go into the junker after only a year or two from big business. We have a service that collects our old IT equipment and recycles it or gets offloaded to auction websites.

    • It’s my most used IT device. Streaming Browsing Video editing Nebo hand writing to text with Apple Pencil (great for meeting notes). 10.5 pro. Hardly use MacBook now that I have iPad

Wife uses hers as a teaching aid… it’s become an essential tool

        I use paper.

        • Paper is ok. Just have difficulty converting my scrawl to text. Nebo does awesome handwriting recognition and transcribes my notes to text so I can send something intelligible out via email. Meeting minutes converted to text and sent out before close of business
