If you're getting frequent heartburns make sure you get tested for helicobacter pylori. That was my cause. Now it's been months of 1 or 2 here and there on the rare occasion and that's where this cheap Nexium helps :)

    • +2

If you're getting frequent reflux, you should consult your doctor. There are many causes of reflux.

      • +2

To get tested for H Pylori you must consult a doctor anyway, so yes to expand on that even further. Yes there are many causes of heart burn, and yes to properly diagnose it you should consult with your doctor, and yes it might not by H Pylori, but you should definitely still talk about it.

Don't go relying solely on antacids and esomeprazole. Consult your doctor to try and find the cause.

I only mention it because so many people haven't heard of it or simply don't know that it can cause heartburn and swallowing difficulties.

        • How easy or difficult was this? I find I get indigestion or difficulty swallowing and my sister was treated for helicobapter overseas - apparently people who have lived together might have it as well?

Edit: rarely do I find it bad enough to warrant indigestion tablets though

@[Deactivated]: Depends how good your GP is. You can walk in and ask for a test if you believe you have it. Typically they'd do a breath test or request a stool sample for testing.

A more thorough test is through an endoscopy down the throat and it's usually found when people are being checked for other issues, like difficulty swallowing.

Most people have the bacteria in their gut anyway. Not everyone gets symptoms.

    • So waking up with heartburn 6 out of 7 days is bad and having it most of the day.
These at least work. But need a Rennie also sometimes.

      • Have you consulted your GP?

      • If you see your GP, you can be prescribed medication significantly cheaper than this deal. I get 30 days (30 tablets) of generic Somac equivalent for $6.99, from Chemist Warehouse. My GP gives me a repeat prescription, so I only need to get a new prescription every six months.

Not treating heartburn will lead to a scarred esophagus, which can lead to cancer.

I miss Zantac. None of the alternatives are quite as good for me.

    • Ditto. With any of these I’ll still need to crunch a Rennie

    • Rocket fuel tho :(

I'd been on Nexium for a couple of years and then my GP, who is pretty liberal with handing out medication, swapped me over to Pantoprazole as he said there had been reports/studies showing long term use of Nexium not being very good.

Nexium definitely worked better and I'd only take one every few days, I'm finding with the pantoprazole I have to take one nearly every day.

I didn’t realise you could buy esomeprazole (& omeprazole) without a prescription. Do you have any deals on a larger pack size, as this price per pill sounds a bit high?

    • +2

I think (and have always wondered, @jason101 maybe you can comment?) that the OTC version is more expensive per dose because the prescriptions are subsidised by the PBS where OTC is full price?

      • +1

Yes. Via script it is on the PBS. Also, the OTC pack only contains 2 weeks worth

IIRC the 40mg is only available via script as well

  • +1

    these wreck your kidneys

  • Used to get heartburn heaps. Stopped eating all the carbs/rice/pasta/bread/biscuits/etc that made up most of my diet and it stopped happening within a week ^_^

    • What do you typically eat now?

    • stop milk products and wheat you will be fine

      Rice does not create problem

  • +2

There are many reasons of that problems

    • helicobacter pylori in your stomach
    • Acid problem
    • Lactose or gluten problem from milk products or wheat
    • have ulcer in your stomach
    • Stone in your gall bladder

So seek experts opinion and if its been a long time then book an appointment with your GP and have some test to know about the actual cause.

    Thanks
