  • WOW… That is an amazing deal.

  • Goodness, how many hours travel would that be ?

14 to LA, another 10 to London

      Very good deal.

        • +1

Disclaimer: LA itself is a dump, but you have Beverly Hills, Hollywood and the theme parks.

        • You must be that guy that wrote 'Chink in the Armor.'

Nope simple statistics mate. USA is the second most popular outbound tourist destination from Australia. Thailand and Singapore are fourth and sixth respectively.

        • +1

          So?
I don't understand how do you get to name 'dump' from that statistic - please explain.

Are all 4th or below ranking in any stats refer to 'DUMP' in your definition?

Be aware that the SYD/LAX aircraft are old and only have the ancient one-big-shared-screen movie system.

..and some Vintage hostess to go with it!

      • I must say business is brilliant, far better than Qantas.

Hot nuts!! Nothing beats hot nuts!!

        • You're joking right? United don't even have lie flat beds. Business on Qantas on the A380 is amazing, but even on the 747 it's pretty good.

Oh gawd I wouldn't fly long haul with united if you paid me $1,419 (actually i probably would - that'd keep be inebriated on quality scotch for the 30hr flight).

I flew them even tho I was advised by numerous people not too - how bad can they be?
They're not much better then Tiger. And as mentioned above, no individual tv's
and when I flew a whole section of the cabin didn't have any in seat audio.

well if the price is ur main factor, then its a good deal.

Ive flown with UA to the US and theyre not that bad - perhaps we had low expectations from the reviews and friend's experiences).

Seats are pretty tight (I am small so I was fine with plenty of room) - but saw this massive dude (looked like a rugby player) who could barely fit.

Then there is the one shared TV screen issue thats noted above but nowadays people have kindle/ipads etc to keep them pre-occupied on flights..

The planes they use for domestic are much better than the SYD-LA planes

I don't mean to ask the obvious, but since this is very cheap - is it definitely a return fare? It doesn't actually stipulate that anywhere that I can see, other than offering "2" free stopovers (presumably one each way).

    • +2

Yes this is return (assumed in the ad) but you are correct in that there is no mention in the main blurb or T&Cs about the fare being return. Two free stopovers in LA would be difficult one way however :)

Edit: Here is United's own CEO Jeff Smisek saying "The 747 that United flies to Australia is not an acceptable level of product"
      http://www.ausbt.com.au/united-continental-ceo-promises-upgr…

      • Yep and they were supposed to be replaced quite a while ago too.

        • Apparently United might be ordering some A380s in the future. Fingers crossed.

  • Buy a $100 tablet and put some movies on it. Seriously…

Arggh why did I have to grow up in the 80s? I remember flying United to the US and there was absolutely nothing for entertainment (this was pre-Gameboy era). You got I think 2 movies in 16 hours, which were usually rubbish. On the plus side, though, airfares were a lot dearer back then, so fewer people flew. I remember sometimes getting 4 empty seats in a row on United, never would get that now.

      • +1

Even post gameboy era those suckers weren't backlit, so once they switch the lights off at night no more gameboy :P

        • You don't remember the light accessory for the Gameboy? There's also the overhead light.
