  • so about 30 a month but can be reduced if you sell the phones

    HTC Explorer - $130
    HTC Chacha $190

    Using Vodafone's network.

    • -6

it says "Red Bull MOBILE Network"

but yeh, this is a great deal

question is, what happens AFTER 1 yr???

      • +7

"Red Bull MOBILE Network" = vodafone network

      • Get another plan?

    • +3

What's wrong with Vodafone network? I'm currently using Vodafone for my personal use and I got a Telstra phone from work, they both working perfectly for my and I never had any issues with both of them beside Voda's call centre in overseas.

      • +6

It depends on where you live. My anecdotal evidence says that Voda is fine for Sydney city but very unreliable elsewhere in Sydney.

Best advice to anyone considering is to buy a trial sim from Voda and test it in your area.

    • When you call from a Vodafone mobile to this one, is it free? Do they consider it as Vodafone To Vodafone call or do they charge? I am having Vodafone and thinking of getting this for my wife. I can manage within my cap but normally wife needs unlimited Talk/Calls :D

      • Wrong interpretation… deleted.

  • +3

Does it means = no network?

    • +4

have you watched the ads lately, Vodafone is trying to improve the network.
Also 'means' and '=' are the same thing in this context so no need to put both in ;)

  • It uses the vodafone network, as stated earlier. It is prepaid, not a plan - just recharge another 365 after a year passes.

    Isn't this ongoing?

  • +1

I got it 2 weeks ago with the ChaCha, didn't have the explorer but still I think the ChaCha is a better phone, faster, keyboard and other features. I unlocked from the vodafone website and unlocked the boot loader from http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ and installed the SuperOSR rom which gives me a lot of features but without the front camera. Reason I installed the rom is because I had a problem on the chacha with fast battery drain due to some dialler lock/proximity issue after you make one call I believe to do with the android version. I think it is a great deal. Data can be slow a lot of the times but the network seems to be fine (Idid have a few drop outs but it could be from the new rom !!)

  • I have red bull, i have trouble tethering with my phone. It drops out after only a few minutes. I'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong, can anyone confirm if they are able to use wifi hotspot on there phone and connect other devices like ps3/xbox?

  • "Data is calculated in 250kb sessions"
Do they do this in reality as it's not the best for a smartphone…

    • +4

At least it's not 1mb chunks like some of them are doing these days.

  • +2

You will need to edit the post -

there is no stock of the Cha Cha (the better phone IMHO)- hasnt been for about 2 weeks according to the guy at Red Bull that I rang.

    only the Explorer left

    • +2

I picked my chacha from ebgames. Give your local ebgames store a call and find out if they have any in stock.

      • +1

Can you clarify that. I thought the last offer when it was just the Cha Cha+ 365 was an online, delivery only deal.

  • +1

The 3g is really slow. I doubt anyone could even use up 1gb on this network

    • My 3G goes about 450Kb/s in the blacktown area. In the CBS is a deferent story. You'll be lucky to get 30Kb/s. My phone will have no problems munching through the allowance overnight

      • +1

do you have home internet? if so, wouldnt you use that whilst at home for faster speed and obviously, the more generous quota?

      • +1

        Getting 5Kb/s from hurstville

        • +3

6 bits a second from rockdale. It took me 3 minutes to load this page.

  • Does anyone know what the frequencies are for the HTC Explorer?

I'm guessing it's 850/2100, but their specs page (http://www.redbullmobile.com.au/phones/htc-explorer/) has conflicting information and a tweet towards them went unanswered.

I believe there's also a deal coming up which has the handset for $49 on top of an Access 180 = $248, but I'm not 100% sure on that as yet. Maybe they'll do it when they publicly release the Access 180 recharge.

I became a Vodafone customer (churned from optus) right in the middle of the time when that whingeing University kid was stirring up trouble for Voda with his 'Vodafail' web site, press appearances, etc, etc. I didn't have any of the problems that he and his sheeply followers were whining about, in fact, I'm such a satisfied Voda customer that I refer other folks to Voda.

So yeah, nothing wrong with Vodafone (except, perhaps, that they're a bit wek by not sueing the ass off that Vodafail kid)

This is a good deal. Imma get one for my lady friend right now (I've already got iphone on voda 'infinite', I'm happy)

    • So yeah, nothing wrong with Vodafone (except, perhaps, that they're a bit wek by not sueing the ass off that Vodafail kid)

Actually, it's very much a case of luck of the draw. My reception at home is ok (most of the time) but near Brisbane cbd I had nothing. Out and about it is patchy at best. This is the second phone I have had on the same contract - on the initial one they sent me internet was as good as non-existent, and I had to accept a refurbished phone as replacement or be stuck with it. And it took them 5 months at the start of my contract to finally get the bill right. That was after it took them 5 weeks to ship the phone from the online store to start with.

Because your experience has been good it has been sheer luck. The complaints by many are well-founded.

    • +2

You've had no problems with Vodafone, therefore no one else has had problems with Vodafone.

I can't see any flaw in this logic.

    • And…I had completely the opposite reaction, living in Sydney CBD. So where does this leave us? Our individual cases are mere conjecture. On the other hand, the overwhelming evidence from users via Whirlpool etc is that Vodafone does indeed stink, they've admitted as such, are promising infrastructure upgrades and are now legally obligated to release subscribers from contracts. So you have a good Vodafone experience? Good for you, but don't you dare discount others' issues with their objectively shitty network.

      Edit: oh and…

      http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-purchase_rationalization

  • does it mean that i get 5 gb/month for 12 months… that is awesome..

    • That's correct.

  • Currently on Live connected (Optus) only get 0-1 bars 3G Optus in my area, should I try the Vodaphone network? is it better than the Optus network?

    • It can vary a little depending on your area, but in general: Telstra > Optus > Vodafone.

Of course, Telstra costs about five times as much as your average Optus or Vodafone reseller.

    • Just buy a $2 Red Sim and check to signal strength with your phone.

  • +2

I would get a Red Bull sim, but then I'd worry that my phone would never go to sleep.

    BOOM TISH

    • +5

@blitz, that was absolutely not funny.

      • +1

        Lol, you're mean.

        • +2

Dont u mean you will literally have to tether it to you coz it will fly?

    • +5

Really? I'd be more worried that my phone would turn in to a sanitary pad because I've heard Red Bull gives you wings..

      Ba-boom tish?

    • congrats. you made me actually wince inside :D

      • hello? excuse me, thank you,um some attention please.

You cannot wince inside because biologically it is impossible to do so.

If there's no Cha Cha they should just let you get a HTC Salsa instead:
    http://www.redbullmobile.com.au/phones/htc-salsa/

Looks like a very nice phone.
Maybe a small cost of $25 would cover it.

    • If anybody tries that strategy with somebody at redbull and it works, let us know!

  • Does anyone use this? I'm interested in getting it, always been on Optus/Virgin so I don't know anything about the performance of Voda.

  • i bought one of these and i'm satisfied with the vodafone network. received the SIM card by express post first, then the phone the next day

the ChaCha is actually alright e.g. good sound, takes nice photos with [very] bright flash, wifi hotspot, feels like a decent quality phone. Battery life is rather bad though, i have to charge my phone every day unlike my 4 year old iPhone 3g which only needs a charge every 2-2.5 days.

    • Have you tried to unlock it using the link provided by OP? I would want to sell it, already got a HTC Sensation

      • yep, mine unlocked no problems :)

    • +1

I think the battery leak issue is inherent with android v. 2.3.4 & 2.3.5 and not just Cha Cha. I upgraded to 2.3.7 and I only charge end of day rather than twice a day now.

  • How long will this thing last? Is it a permanent thing?

    • +1

Yes, it's permanent. These 'unlimited' plans have been around for a while. There's no urgency to subscribe to their deals (unless you want the $1 phone)

  • Is there any issue tethering to an Acer Iconia tablet?

  • Dont ever trust those locations checks online or when u call them. http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/aboutvodafone/networkin…

I once called and checked online to virgins/others services and listings about how wireless INTERNET would work in a certain area and they said it would barely/wouldnt work. I bought one anyway despite what they said to me and it worked quite well(200-300kbs :) this was down at pambula)this was back when the $14 usb dongle for virgin was out.

I also wanted to ask if a lot of people are using the same network within a small area, does it slow the speed down?

  • -2

this was posted last month http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60887

    • different handset.

  • Hi, if I join this I am able to make unlimited calls / texts to my uni friends and classmates, a lot of which are with Vodafone network.

But how about them calling me? If they are on monthly plans with unlimited free Voda to Voda calls / texts, do you think they can also contact me for free please. Cheers.

  • Any promo code available for checkout?

  • I signed up for this before xmas and got a chacha. Sold it on ebay for $110.
I get good reception in Perth but the internet speed is awful!
I suppose u get what you pay for. ($365-$110=$255 for a years phone use)

    • I was thinking about selling it on ebay but noticed some go for as low as $60 so decided to keep it, and I enjoy it now. Data always syncing no worries about over spending :)

      • They were going for $150+ when I ordered the phone but as it took a week or so to get delivered, the price dropped a lot then.
        Still $60 is better than nothing… :)

  • bloody good deal.

  • the HTC Explorer has a gps but does it come with turn by turn nav software with aus maps?

  • +1

Just got a sim and 7 day starter pack to check the for connectivity and download speeds before committing to a 365 day plan.

At the EBGames store I was advised that if I did not want the chacha phone for a dollar, then atm there is a promo where you get a $100.00 EBGames voucher if you purchase the 365 day prepaid plan. That is $100 off to spend on games or hardware sold by EB.

    Better value than online.!!

  • Ive confirmed that this is a UMTS 850/900/1800/2100 mobile, so about the cheapest 3G mobile for the vodafone network's 850 new freq

    • Are you sure that's right?
