FWIW ordered my wife 4 pairs of glasses recently from Zenni. Very impressed with the build quality and finish - averaged out at near $80/pair landed with progressive lenses and 1.57 index and a few coatings. Have ordered from a few other foreign online places for her before and the quality was pretty bad but this was first order from Zenni and easily on par with bricks and mortar here. We had optical cover but far more cost effective overall to buy from OS.
So you can't use private insurance extra with zenni?

Not with ours anyway (HIF) - unsure what the core rationale behind that is - as whether it goes to domestic or foreign supplier they only pay the same so seems antiquated policy but I know many are the same.
I waited till Zenni had a small sale (think it was 30% off lenses) but these come regularly. Fit etc was true to form, good options, postage was ok.
I'd just beware that a lot of domestic sellers mislead with the different tiers of progressive lenses available - - better ones having a wider viewing area. Many were still selling older styles which foreign sellers like Zenni and Select Specs (IIRC) have progressed on from.
For those who say buy local, where she had her optical test done quoted just under $1000 for a single pair of pretty basic frames with her script…..got 4 pairs with on par frames and lenses for $700 less.
Just make sure you read up on selecting right frame sizes, lens options for your script - makes a big difference and more expensive isn't always better. :-)
I recently started to need reading glasses and got my first pair from a local optometrist. c$490 for a very nice pair of single focus glasses.
Then I thought I'd get a spare pair from Zenni. They cost c$49 and are also a very nice pair of specs. I'm not sure if I prefer one pair over the other as they both are decent quality. There are some differences though. Both pairs have blue light filtering and when you look at them from a certain angle the local glasses lenses have a blue tint to them while the Zenni's have a yellowish tint. I'm not sure but the Zenni lens material appears to be some sort of plastic.
I also bought some non-prescription readers from AliExpress for c$4.80 each. They're definitely not as high quality as the other two but still pretty darned good considering the price.
Moving forward I'll be sticking with Zenni as the price and quality make it a bargain.
I’ve used zenni for my last couple of glasses and can’t recommend it enough for people looking to break free from the prices we pay here for prescribed glasses.
Sorry how do you get your prescription? Just ask your Optometrist for it directly? Can they say no?
Yep, just ask them for it as they're required to give it to you.
They aren't required to give the pupil distance (PD) measurement which you also need, although if you ask nicely they might measure it for you. Otherwise there are several apps you can use that take a photo and calculate it for you.
@Shrew: I swear my local Specsavers cheated me when I did this, my order from I could barely see through, it wasn't a manufacturing error because both ordered pairs were the same however my mum's script from another optometrist that I also ordered from clearly came through perfect. Be wary.
@sk3iron: Same experience. My local Specsavers is so dodgy. The optometrist gave the script to the salesperson on paper which I could peek over as +3.5 on Right and +4.0 on Left When I asked him to provide me a script to check options elsewhere, guess what - he prepared a script with +4.5 on both eyes, even stronger than the previous pair. Such a shifty ba$tard. I'm so angry but not sure how I can expose these con artists. BUYERS BEWARE!
It 's technically illegal to refuse to give you, your prescription.
You have purchased a service and product and you are entitled to the full service and product.
So you can just walk in to your usual opto and ask for it to be provided and they have to.
Otherwise, get a test done via Medicare/private or simply pay them.

For glasses or contacts, using other providers like Zenni, Clearly.com.au, visiondirect, etc..is best.
Some, even have the ability to upload your face photo and apply the glasses virtually.
Your private health should cover your purchase if you have optical, just upload your receipt to them.
Nose bridge thing is an issue for kids with the online retailers otherwise completely agree.

I'm new to contacts (just finished the trial at SS, I need Torics) and I have absolutely no idea which / where to start actually buying the things.
There's half a dozen different brands at SS, and probably dozens more available from the bigger online retailers like Clearly, Zenni, etc.
Has anyone got some recommendations? Should I stick with SS or is the quality and value better with the online retailers? Can I buy say, a pack of Lefts in one brand, a pack of Rights in another brand, and compare them? Is there much difference between brands?
Old post sorry, I'm not sure about mixing brands in one eye and the other but there is definitely a different feel from them based on the materials and formulas they use in them. I used to wear contacts for sport and I couldn't wait to take them out and if I wore them for work my eyes would fatigue and by the end of the day I was also really keen to take them out. So I just formed the belief- contacts are a little uncomfortable and make your eyes tired/sore.
Then one day I tried a different brand (Dailies Total 1) and they were comfortable to the point I now wear them all day every day and a couple of times have forgotten to take them out and slept in them- because they're not noticeable. I doubt there is a 'best' one because everyone will have a different feel, I just recommend you don't settle until you find one that's comfortable.
Thanks for the reply! … Most people just seem to be saying 'if you're not having any issues, just stick with what you're given'. Everyone does seem iffy on mixing brands, and I intuitively get it, but I just can't think of any logical reason it's be a bad idea health wise vs the same contacts in both eyes - and it ends up halving the waste cost if I hate a given model.
May I ask how you ended up switching brands exactly? Did you just pick a random brand and give it a go? Did an optometrist suggest them? … Did you have to carefully look at specs? …
Very late reply, sorry. I think I read a thread on Whirlpool and saw which brands were popular. I'm not an optometrist, so maybe consult them, but you can match up the Base Curve of your current contacts and find ones which have the same or very close diameter and it should be fine. Some optometrists will let you do a trial if you have a prescription, you could make a few calls.
If your contacts aren't noticeable then there's no reason to change. If they're tolerable or ok then maybe you could find ones you don't notice, but you could also find ones that are worse.
