If you know what you are doing..

Not very difficult for simple scenarios

Honestly if you work salary and wages you literally click next the whole way through.

          This.
The only thing you'll probably need to do extra this year (and last year) is total up all the hours you worked at home so you can claim the $0.80 per hour Covid WFH shortcut - full instructions on the ATO site 👍

I had some weirdness with this one year with my HECS. It seemed like it wasn't picking up that I'd paid it and said I owed something like $5k. Paid an online accountant $60 and they fixed it up and actually got me a return. The free tool isn't perfect and a small investment to have a human look at it can save you a bundle of your tax is even slightly complicated and you have no idea what you're doing.

Just keep in mind the ATO's goal is to collect as much revenue for the government as they can, not get you a good tax refund.

I'm not suggesting to use these guys, just that a decent accountant who should be working to get you a good refund can be had for $100 these days - and their fees are tax deductible next year too.

The ato collects money based on legislation. They're not there to maximise their profits.

Why do people always say "good tax return"? If your employer withheld $5000 in taxes but you're only suppose to pay $4000 based on your income, then you get $1000.

Now if your accountant is claiming all these creative deductions plus the $300 soft limit that the Ato "allows" in order to get a "good return" then that's fraud.

        • +4

Some say "fraud" some say "tax minimisation strategies"

No one said anything about creative deductions. My point was, it's an accountant's job to know what deductions you can claim legally. If you lodge for free to the ATO and you miss even one of those they're not going to tell you about it.

Instead you're giving the ATO a donation of money you've already worked hard to earn. I'm not that rich that I can afford to give the ATO a few hundred extra dollars a year by missing a deduction I'm entitled to claim.

          • @ham0718: That list of possible deductions is absolutely tiny for a normal salaried worker - usually if you have a work-related cost then your employer is going to pay it, not you the employee.
It's nowhere near complicated enough to need an accountant unless you're regularly spending money on your work - most salaried workers aren't doing this, so the "can I claim deduction ?" process can be as simple as looking at the two occasions in a year when you actually spent your own cash on your work.

Secondly, the list of things you can claim is right there on the ATO site ! It's not something that only accountants have access to … you simply need to compare the list against the spent-on-work-receipts you kept for the year.

TL:DR there's not much chance of "missing stuff" unless you try hard to !

              @Nom: Let's agree to disagree.

  • $50 through TFN means wont include property investors yeah?
