Probably just castor oil? Pretty sure that was a thing back in the day.
High oleic soybean oil most likely
https://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/29748/biosynthetic…The unique, plant derived base oil utilised within Castrol MAGNATEC BIO-SYNTHETIC is derived from sustainably sourced sugarcane and designed to deliver high performance, while offering the environmental benefit of renewability when compared with petroleum-sourced base oils.
On the Castrol page you linked in the previous post.
A thread on BITOG speculates Castrol is using Novvi base oils, which makes sense as I've read that Castrol does not manufacture its own base oils but purchases others' and blends them to make their own products.
Thanks mate. Useful for an oil change soon.
Used Castrol for twenty years and they are good.
Never tried Bio-Oil yet, so may give this a try.
This seems to be even better than normal synth:
5W-30 motor oil recently certified by the API achieved a piston deposit cleanliness rating of 8.5 out of 10. Petroleum synthetic oils typically score between 6.0 and 7.0, while conventional petroleum oils score between 4.0 and 5.5.
For the record, the above is quoting this article: https://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/29748/biosynthetic… in reference to soy-based motor oils from Biosynthetic Technologies. Not the same as Magnatec Bio-Synthetic, which claims to be partially manufactured from sugarcane.
Thanks, good to know. I’m reading the article now.
For the bigger picture, it’s worth saying that moving to these bio oils is probably good for the world (environment) and we should support manufacturers going this way. But I haven’t put much thought into oil extraction vs production of these oils. I mean are rainforests being cut so sugarcane or soy can grow to produce these oils, for example. The world’s soil is declining too, in a way maybe it’s better to keep sucking up the oil.
@Corgsta: The NovaSpec base oils that Castrol is speculated to be using is manufactured by Novvi which claims "its current products are made from sustainably grown Brazilian sugarcane".
This review of the sustainability of sugarcane production in Brazil puts the industry in a positive light: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13593-018-0490-x
@Junk Sifter: Ok that’s interesting. They do say sugarcane is being grown in already depleted farmland (and not clearing forest).
I ended up buying 5W-40 Gulf Western at Autobarn today, $40 reduced from $60. That SAE rating is recommended for my diesel Ute.

How can it be fully synth if it has vege oil in it?
Thinking the vege oil base would be modified to synthetic PAO/ESTER oils.
Nowadays oil manufacturers get away with calling modified mineral oils "Synthetic " when they have properties like Synthetic.
The price is good. No idea what biosyn oil is.
Castrol says
Utilising revolutionary Eco-Engineering technology, Castrol has combined MAGNATEC’s clinging molecules with 25% renewable plant-based oil without any protection or performance compromise!
Is it just 25% of vegetable oil added to a normal oil base?
