It's harder to find 17 inch laptop deals so I think this is pretty good if this is the screen size you are looking for.

  • Thinking about helping my son get this. Is there likely to be a better deal going for an equivalent gaming laptop (just saw this, have not researched)? Also did this ever actually sell for the $2998 RRP?

It is a lot of laptop for the money. It certainly did sell for $2998. Whether people bought it at that price is another question.

Entire thread about it right here on OZB.

      • Refurbished units have been as low as $1289 on the Dell Factory Outlet (as recently as the last few days) for the G5 equivalent. Great deal but the cooling is quite bad :/

        • Wow, for $1300, I'd risk it with the cooling.

        • Thanks all for the info. He currently has a nearly 2y.o 15" Asus gaming i5 based and that seems to have pretty bad cooling too. Had to have fans replaced under warranty recently. It struggles with recent games with its 1050+.

        • Link?

          • @congo: There has only been a few individual units of them. So they don't last very long. The last one lasted maybe 3 days though which was lengthy in itself.

Wouldn’t touch this, cooling is a joke on dell gaming laptops.

Get the Asus Zephyrus or Lenovo Legion gaming laptops.

    • Yeps all I have read is thermal issues…

Better the other laptops or get the G15 range which copies the Alienware design.

  • I would recommend getting a 3 year warranty, just bec of these crazy powerful GPUs can cause over heating and melting solders. Great deal at this price

  • I have this one. I don't recommend this laptop unless you are good at tinkering the settings to control the laptop's voltage and other several settings, which if not done causes the most random slowdowns during normal usage and gaming! Overall it's a beautiful heavy laptop cursed with Dell's bad cooling and firmware design.

    • Damn. I've been lookin for a 17in notebook. I'd have hoped with the larger base they could fix the cooling, but apparently not.

      • The laptop works really well if you know how to undervolt + reduce and unlock a few settings using Throttlestop. I tried everything and was having issue non stop before doing what I did. Even league of legends wouldn't give me more than 120fps. It's a terrible laptop out of the box but great specs for price after tweaks.

        • Is it worth the $1600? How much performance did you lose?

          • @BinaryPirate: I'd say yes, since I didn't return mine :)
But I regret not buying it through the outlet given the warranty is the same and it is cheaper.
Overall I'm happy with it after the tweaks I have made. No other laptop in that price gives such specs.

            • @i2295: Having had no success finding a 17in with similar specs for the same price or less, I guess I better start looking up how to undervolt :)

              • +1

@BinaryPirate: Exactly the same reason I kept mine! Happy to help if needed!

                • @i2295: Appreciate the offer, thanks. Hopefully it won't take the quoted 4 weeks to turn up.
I'm already on their case about it.

Will flick you a PM if I get stuck.

  • I’d wait for their rtx3000 laptops to start trickling into their eBay store.

  • Ordered this back on 23rd june on ebay. Can someone with experience dealing with dell ebay store before provide insights to shipping times?
Currently it says ETA is 27th July to 2nd Aug. Does it seriously take this long, isn’t Dell in Australia?

    • Call Dell with the order number. Mine was at ridiculous ETA. After that they were able to ship it for the next day.

Highly recommend this laptop. I purchased it a month ago and I have not had any thermal issues whilst gaming at max settings. Awesome machine.

  • Just put an order in for this, then saw the Acer Nitro 5 with 3060 on sale for $1,299… thoughts?

  • would this be a good upgrade from a gtx 1080 laptop?
