          Shouldn’t be viewing it as a “them” vs “us” thing. You being mad about not getting a discount has no bearing on surgeons’ eligibility for the discount.

          It does say hospital staff though - unless you only work in community.

            @Jaystea: I’m a surgeon. I am still finishing my 15 years of slave labour in the public hospital system.

            To give you an example - I operated from 730-5pm two days ago and then as I was leaving the hospital, got called back for another emergency. Operated straight again until 5am trying to save a mans limb.

            Your attitude is reflective of many patient attitudes and has no, I hope, bearing in reality.

            The truth is we kill ourselves for 15-20 years working public holidays, nights, starting every day very very early and miss out on life in the hope of doing a good service, working with our hands and hopefully being financially comfortable.

            Comments like yours are very disheartening- especially given the 3/4 weekends and 12-15 hour/days we will all do for 15 years until we finish.

            If you think surgeons are so wretched - no need to see one. Don’t spread your hate without being informed. Private surgeons charge because they are worth it.

            In comparison to your realtor that takes $30k for flogging your house, the surgeon actually saves your life or improves it.

              Its not the public perception of an easy road .

                @Ham Dragon: There is a class action for a reason. Most trainees and program hopefuls are grossly underpaid.

                The reality is the public benefits from almost twice as many hours as they pay for. As someone with plenty of labouring mates who make as much an hour as we do after 6-8 years of study, and then 10-15 years of training as an underpaid trainee I would be slow to discredit the description as slave labour.

              @JamesHand: Unfortunately in some medical professions this is somewhat warranted but wouldn't be in the case of a surgeon. As you well know, you've had a decade of training and there isn't anyone else out there that can do what you do.

              Attitudes like this often come from other medical professionals that charge hundreds of dollars for single digit minute consultations that unfortunately are used to paint everyone with one brush

              What's your salary near to and do you work with an accountant to salary sacrifice and also negative gear properties?
              Do you often bargain hunt?
              What car do you drive?
              Is your home paid off?
              What do you do for investments?
              Do you hold ETFs?
              Do you use a diet to maintain your weight?
              Would you use private health insurance to deliver a baby in your personal life or use public system?

                @w37hsyea: Trainee surgeons make ~$100-150K per annum (sometimes more depending on overtime arrangements at particular hospital networks). Public posts for surgeons can be ~$250-400K per annum. Private work has a large number of variables, but I know surgeons who are running at $300-750K per annum, and some outliers running at $1-2mil.

                The median Australian income is ~$60K.

                The conditions of employment are horrible for most particularly those doing public work, and it makes you think about what you want from your life apart from wealth, but just as relevant to most in this profession, career progression, achievement, and status.

                As for your other questions largely around personal finance and investing, what each individual in the medical profession does is about as variable and individual as any one else. Generally speaking, many have poor or average financial education. But they'll range from some who have too much consumer debt and too slow an accumulation of assets (like many, except fancier houses and cars), to those who are more entrepreneurial and invest well and invest quickly and some who start and grow businesses.

              @JamesHand: As an emergency physician I'm partly responsible for calling the surgeons back for urgent surgeries middle of the night :P

              Surgical trainees work crazy hours, they are often underpaid because they are reluctant to claim overtime, as they don't want negative repercussions from higher-ups or admin while they are still a registrar, they don't complain either because this is often viewed as a sign of "weakness".

              This is unsafe practice, but it's also the "norm" in surgical culture since beginning of time.

                  @muwu: Yes, after the patient has been seen by +-paramedics, nurses, doctors, +-physio, +- home teams.
                  Social worker is normally involved in disposition plan.

                  I'm not disrespecting social worker, in fact, I think social worker's input is invaluable in patients with difficult social situations.
                  But no, seeing a patient in ED does not mean you are a first responder.
                  First responder means someone with medical knowledge making a medical assessment.

              @JamesHand: I have been a “Doctor in training” just like @jameshand however not in surgery but another training pathway.
              So here is a what my life has been like for 7 years before I decided that it was enough.
              - I had 9-5 ‘normal’ working hours Mon-Fri then on top 2-3 times a week I was ‘on-call’ which meant 5pm to 9am next day. 95% of times I was in the hospital seeing patients in the emergency or the wards. That’s a straight 24 hours of work. Then on top had to find time for studying and family or friends if there was any time left.

              • Bullying in the workplace and especially from nursing and Allied staff towards Doctors in training was horrible in about 60% of the hospitals.

              • 2 of my colleagues (Doctors in Training) committed suicide due to mounting pressure and workplace bullying and harassment.

              • salary was $90k plus overtime.

              But is it really worth it? Honestly the ONLY thing kept me going was that I was saving lives and making an impact on people’s health and well-being.

              My partner was also a Doctor in Training. We decided to delay having a child due to the incredible pressure from work to ‘be available to work overtime’ for a number of years. When we finally decided to take a break and plan for a family, the obstetrician said we waited too long and she couldn’t fall pregnant even with IVF.
              After 5 years of IVF when she finally got pregnant her employer/hospital didn’t renew her contract because they found out she was pregnant. They asked her the question ‘outside’ the interview and not during the interview.

              So after spending $$$,$$$ on treatments, and both of suffering from major depression, and loosing arguably the ‘best days of life’ by working our a**es off. What do we get??

              There needs to be a Royal Commission let alone class action against the hospitals which are run by the State governments.
              If anything happens to nurses they go on strike and it hits the news, however no one really cares much about Junior doctors!

              At the end I would say, Is it really worth going through all what we have been through???

                @abdalian: Heard this story countless times among friends…

                I've thought about people's stories to understand why they do it, and I think it's:

                1) an idealised perception of how things will be once they're a boss (consultant)
                2) youthful aspiration
                3) power, usually of status or position (rarely money).

                Three years in public was enough for me. Six years now in private and every aspect of the jobs are much better; some things are very rewarding…

                Where have you found greener pastures?

                  @w37hsyea: Thanks, live in NSW. Tried to gather registrars (trainees) to get together, but mostly people chocked out.
                  My first experience was as a year 1 trainee (registrar). The Medical director racially discriminated, harassed and bullied me. When I raises my voice, I got too much attention. That medical director left the position and it was announced that he left due to ‘health reasons’.
                  My life became so tough after that the consultants tried to fail my subsequent two terms and I was without any legit reason put under performance management. I left the service and joined another for a fresh start. But the word went around and I left the second service. Then the same happened at the 3rd service.
                  Bottom line is that I was told by one of the consultants that I should not have put a complaint in the first place!
                  Let alone all the problems we all face from other sources.
                  So I left my training after so many years!

                    @abdalian: What gets me, is that the culture continues. I am in private practice and would never shout down or bully a colleague but saw many instances of it when a jmo/registrar at my hospitals.

                    The fact that as consultants the doctor's don't get scrutinised by management for significant workplace bullying is atrocious.

          A surgeon saved my life and went through a tonne of training to do so. Every social worker I’ve seen has been more of a headache than helpful. One even messed up a DV situation for me because they “forgot” to submit forms. Honestly it is a piece of cake to become a social worker. I’m not saying they’re all bad, but they don’t deserve first responder status.

                @[Deactivated]: Got the 77" C1 at $5617 delivered! Mixture of gift cards used to bring down to that price on top of the first responder discount on the current $6995 list price. The receipt was 3 meters long and it took about 20 minutes to scan all the gift cards but all worth it! I also used the HSBC credit card which has a $600 cashback after meeting the spend criteria which is easy after this purchase, in the end will end up paying just $5017 which is amazing for the 77C1! Ozbargain is amazing!!

                @kulprit: If you're after a 65" then I'd say yes I guess, I'm after the 77" so not entirely sure. The best clearance pricing I saw on the 77" CX was 5795, which was just earlier this month and stock was hard to find as it was in clearance so at $5945.75 in this promo and stacking the gift cards I got 2 weeks ago, I'm definitely getting it!

    Does anyone know if they'd accept an AHPRA membership? My wife is a GP nurse who doesn't have an actual ID card or proper uniform (i.e. scrubs) so the only thing she'd be able to show as proof is her AHPRA registration and maybe a letter of employment from her employer.
