Your comment is not constructive, then we can say that very soon will come ssd under $100 so your post will deserve a neg??

    • +3

Are you kidding? You negged this because your "guessing" something cheaper will be coming along.

    • +4

Yes and very soon we will all have flying cars… So no point getting one of those daft ones with wheels…

        • +1

You could do a search and try to find a better deal then I guess nobody would opinion your neg.

        • +1

There is a difference between not giving a + and giving a negative for the wrong reason.

    • +1

yes captain obvious, and the sun sets before it gets dark too

and before what you says happens, you are getting a neg.

This is a cheap deal at the moment but once HDD manufacturing is back to its normal self (post-Thailand floods) USB 3.0 prices will come far closer to this price and this price will not be worth it. Good price now. I predict in 2-3 months this won't be such a great price.

When I bought my HP 2.5" 500GB it was the best deal around, now I look the prices and I see they dropped even more also drives are bigger and faster, this is the life……

  • +3

well at the moment, ie. right now, today. i have seen prices for 500gb ext going for more then this. that is the reason why i posted. if there was a better deal tommorow i would post that up too.

Funny how we're seeing all these SSD prices come crashing down and standard HDDs on the up :P

    • +3

Actually, HDD prices started falling last week. Hopefully it's a good sign..

Before the floods I bought the 2TB version of this drive for $79.

Also, I heard Seagate artificially created a shortage of their drives for the sake of WD. Since Seagate was not affected by the floods in Thailand. Don't know how true that is tho :P

Anything merchants do is ALWAYS for money!
They for sure took the advantage of this environmental disaster to sell drives at market price and so for 50% more.
I don't know if this was a legit move or not.

      • +1

Basic economics… the law of supply and demand. Demand oustrips supply and the item sells at a premium, supply exceeds demand and it sells at a discount.

Seagate didn't need to artificially create a shortage, with their main rival effectively out of the market there already was a shortage. They could either ramp up production (expensive and not really an option here as they were affected indirectly but their own component suppliers) or increase the price to temper demand. Otherwise their stock would be run down twice as fast and they too would be struggling to replenish and meet demand.

it's more interesting given that it is for technology that shifts rapidly interms of capacity:price.

a year ago internal 2tb went under $99. then down to $79.

sure these are internals and this post is for externals. the point is that an increase (and i call this a substantive increase) has occurred for a consumerably that traditionally has decreased in price as the availability of greater storage becomes available.

Bought this exact same drive from DSE for the same price but with free shipping….

Brought 1.5t expansion seagate 2.5" USB power last week from dick smith midland WA
$129.00, I believe was a mistake on the shelf as the tag said "expansion port" (maybe for portable HDD). So … maybe the tech-expert are not that expert really…

    • +1

How can be a tech expert with a basic salary and a temporary contract?
I had once a job interview at DS and I can assure you the interviewers have no idea what is a computer.

Good on you for the great deal, as you see the incompetence has a price :)

I bought my 2TB 3.5" HDD for $99 more than 1 year ago.
prices should be falling after 1 year.
    how is this a bargain?

    I also bought a 1TB 2.5" for $99 over a year ago.
