Asrock AMD X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard $159 + Delivery @ PC Byte

280

Full specs: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXTB3…

Regrettably, I just purchased one of these for $189 from BPCtech.co.au, thought I'd check the price again and it's still trending downwards, now $159 at PCByte.

A bit of a funny board with the nvme slot on the back, sure to get nice and hot. The board also has a built in fan over the southbridge (?) which uses one of the 3 fan headers, and apparently runs quite loud without tweaking the system settings.

An important note also is the Intel LGA 115X cooling mount form factor - not a problem for me (fingers crossed) but certainly a potential deal breaker.

Otherwise it has a thunderbolt 3 USB-C port, WIFI 6 and Bluetooth 5, "armoured" IO (but a standard flimsy shield).

I'd love to have purchased a board with 2 x nvme but they are all premium price or have other deal breakers.

    That is veryyyyy cheap son!

    • It is indeed, but I wouldn't be caught dead paying RRP of $330 for this odd duck.

  • Be spewing if you paid $199 from PCCG for this. I'm still very tempted by it but their use of intel mounting holes is baffling. Can't use a Wraith Prism on it!

  • Quick Q re the point around the 115X mount - is it the case that this is an AM4 board but only accepts coolers which work on 115X? I.e. it won't be able to mount a Wraith?

It does have TB3 though, which is exceptionally rare for AM4 boards.

    • Yes exactly. So, for a Corsair AIO, you use the Intel bracket to mount it.

      • Yeah it's great isn't it, especially since I recently spruiked $30 for a new AM4 brack for my corsair AIO - only to realise that I could easily have drilled the extra holes in the old AM3 plate, and now I won't need it anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • I urgently needed to put this mobo in, turned out I was missing the bottom intel bracket (for under the mobo), probably on another board I sold a long time ago.

Ended up buying another H60 on the spot as I needed it for some work projects and nowhere sold the mounting kit separately…

    • Correct, only supports mounting hole for LGA 115x coolers

      From Asrock website:

      LGA 115X Mounting hole
A special design that uses Intel® LGA 115X mounting holes instead of AMD retention bracket.
*Can’t support AMD AM4 socket cooler.

Goddamn. I paid $230 for this a few weeks ago.

It's one of the only ways to get a 10Gbe connection onto an ITX AM4 board while still having space for a GPU.

Assuming your end device takes a TB3 plug for that connection (such as a number of QNAP NAS') or you have a TB3 - 10Gbe connector.

The layout is a nightmare, and yes, it only takes Intel coolers.

Another hot tip, remove the shroud from the board's onboard cooler fan. It eliminates any whining noises you might have. Just takes two screws.

    • Or just unplug the fan? Now that's a hot tip ;)

I will actually try that and see how the temps go because I want that extra fan header.

Asrock has been building some woefully underpowered boards of late. Hardware Unboxed has been ripping them for bad VRM design on all sorts of boards (mostly Budget & Midrange) and GPUs for about 2 years now. Seems to be worse on their Intel Boards at the moment.

Please go through the reviews and look for any VRM Thermal comparisons first, especially if you are putting a 3800x/5800x or higher into this.

Asrock is on my shitlist for the moment, I won't buy anything from them at all.

This is not it, this has good VRMs and Builzoid said that it could even run a 3950x I believe. Also you have to look at the reviews for anything, Asus had bad b450 boards for example while MSI had excellent ones.

      • Hence my comment to go through the reviews for this board and comparisons.

    • True for Intel but their AMD Boards have been good

I purchased this board when it released (had to import it from the US) at full price but I have been extremely happy with it. The fact it has TB3 allows me to connect additional PCIE cards to the computer. 1x NVME is the most disappointing aspect of this board, I guess they needed the PCIE lanes for TB3. The 115x mounting support was helpful and was a massive positive for me when this board was released, there were far more and cheaper cooling options available that supported 115x at the time.

The only cheap one with TB3

Gigabyte B550 Vision D-P is like $370, and the next is Asus CREATOR at $400+

I have a 3900X + Mugen cooler on this, inside an NR200 case. RTX 3070 GPU. No issues whatsoever. I replaced the chipset heatsink with a passive Northbridge cooler from AliExpress. NVME temps is the same as the chipset temp as they are directly opposite each other on the board. Stock hits 60 at load. With the mod, it never goes over 45 degrees.

Nice work, I was thinking of something similar but I've never looked into after market chipset heatsinks. Care to provide a link?

Just to clarify, you're referring to the bottom heatsink with the fan?

If that's the case, it's crazy that a passive heatsink could make such a difference. Why even design it with a cute little fan if a passive heatsink will do the same or better job?

Cheers! That is quite a beasty, explains the better thermals.

        • Wait… how do you even fit that inside the NR200 with the GPU? I'm looking at my mobo and it's quite tight.
Would you happen to have uploaded a pic of the interior on imgur or otherwise?

          Thanks!

  • TLDR - check immediately if the board comes bent and check if BT works - if not, return it immediately.

Bought this 2 weeks ago for $200 from a reputable Australian retailer - it was defected. Finally got it refunded after 2 weeks of trying to figure out what was wrong with it.

Upon purchase, I walked back to my car, checked the board, and immediately noticed a slightly bend in the board…it was bending in the middle ever so slightly but noticeable. Lesson learnt the hard way - I should have immediately exchanged it. However, I thought nothing of it and drove home to install the board.

Yes, this board only fits 115X coolers BUT because of how small the board is, and how tight the space is between the RAM and CPU slots, some/most brackets on some/most LGA115X coolers that just won't fit on the board, so you're supposed to only use the coolers recommended on the AsRock website: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXTB3…

I used the Silverstone AR02 which is one of the recommended coolers - DO NOT USE THIS - the backplate although has the screwholes to fit a LGA115X, the backplate itself definitely is not made for the board - it rubs on a lot of components under the board which probably added to the issues I was about to experience.

Upon first boot, everything works, but Bluetooth only worked for 10mins, and never again after that, and one of the USB ports was loose or would unplug/plug my device consistently.

Swapped the cooler out for a stock Intel LGA1155 and everything worked properly including Bluetooth….for 30mins.

Brought it back to the retailer after 5 business days to refund, but they refused - they only offered to diagnose it and they couldn't replicate any of the faults.

I take it back and get a Noctua NH-U9S thinking it was the coolers I was using that was the problem - everything works for 40mins…and then it blue screens.

I reboot, and 20mins later, it blue screens again with my m.2 SSD now undetectable. S**tting my pants thinking my drive was corrupted, I took it out and put it back in my old B450 board - luckily not corrupted.

I turn everything off, clear CMOS and boot it back up with my SATA SSD that also has Windows installed on it - it just hangs on the AsRock boot up screen - no option to get into BIOS or boot menu.

Bring it back to the retailer 2 weeks later - finally got a refund.

I'll never know what was wrong with the board, but I suspect the bend had something to do with it and the Silverstone cooler.
