Tempting upgrade from my 2XL, but hard decision with the Whitechapel chip coming on the 6. Ahhh!!

    • +3

I'm in the same position, the battery on my P2XL is getting noticeably worse recently…Trying to hold out for the 6 though too!

      • +1

Same here with my battery! Apart from that though it stills runs great.

        • +6

I think I have some freak 2XL. I still get consistent ~4hrs SOT coming up on 4 years old.
Almost annoying because I have no justifications for upgrading! Will see how long I can make this last.

          • +1

@sirmemealot: Happy with my 2xl so far, but it's showing its age !! Will see how the pixel 6 fairs 🙂
I would have liked having the astro photography feature …. My pics of the blood moon look like a smudge on a blackboard .

            • +1

@roy2016: Astrophotography didn't work on my pixel 5, I think the moon was too much light, I propped the phone up and left it, normally the prompt comes up to use Astrophotography, but it didn't. My photos were smudges too!

          • @sirmemealot: 3+ year old Pixel 2XL here, 5.5hrs to 6hrs of SOT with a custom ROM + Kernel + Greenify. Still snappy AF compared to stock ROM too. My biggest issue with it is after others in the household upgraded to 120hz panel phones & better/bigger screens with much better brightness in day time, I keep feeling the itch to upgrade. But I'll try to hold for the Pixel 6 Pro release.

            • @ThatsCheap: Yep XDA is everyones friend. Hard to feel the need to update when battery is the main factor.

          • @sirmemealot: Likewise, I still get roughly 5h. I have been using a cable to charge in the car so my battery seems to last much longer. But even on days that I don't I still average 4-5h.

        • Yo my 2xl batt is fine but front camera is mostly dead and occasionally comes back alive

        • yeah my p2xl runs great now except the screen was broken. it was slow a couple of years ago with 1 update and then with another update it went smooth again

        • The battery on my Pixel 2XL isn't the issue so much. More so the power button doesn't really work and PD never really worked in addition to sometimes not charging at all when I plug in a standard USB A to C cord. Other than that, I've really enjoyed it. Looking more towards iPhone next for the build quality though.

      • Mine's pixel 2.. damn the battery is killing me. Holding for 6 though!!

      • Same here, the pixel 2 xl battery life is worse. Don't know which phone to switch to!

    • +4

Happy with my Pixel 5 but the 6 looks like it will actually have a significant camera upgrade which I think is worth waiting for because up to now the hardware hasn't really changed that much from the Nexus 6P/Pixel 1.

      • +1

Me- a serial camera user: aw yes you've answered my question I'm waiting for six

    • I was just reading up and it says Samsung are making the chip for Google (or assisting them in making the chip). Given that Exynos is often panned as being inferior to Snapdragon, wouldn't there be a risk that Whitechapel will be similar to Exynos?

      • Apparently it's on par with SD865 but it has extra AI and photo processing chips.

    • +1

Awesome. I didn't know there were so many of us still in the 2XL camp. Pixel 6 Pro is going to be sick. I'm waiting.

      • +1

Wife and I are still in Pixel 2. Mine has a scratched screen but my wife's is spotless. Both work well. I almost pulled the plug for the 4a 5G but got cold feet. I think we are going to wait for Pixel 6 and buy them with 28 degrees credit card to be on the safe side.

It is amazing how good the Pixel 2 is. Very good quality compared to its successors.

  • Great deal.

  • +7

Great deal but after owning a Pixel 5 for a short period of time I'd go for the 4a 5G instead for the better quality earpiece speaker.

    • +1

The ear speaker's worse on the 5?

      • +10

Heaps worse, it's the under glass speaker not a traditional earpiece. I couldn't hear people propeely so I switched to an S20 FE and still have it

        • +2

Yeah you have to press it uncomfortably against your head to get a good volume. The vibration is also very weak compared to other phones (could just be the QC on mine).

          • +1

@aileron: Oh yeah, the vibration motor was horrible too. I turned all vibrations off on mine before I returned it to JB.

          • @aileron: Interesting. So is it some sort of bone conducting audio, like Aftershokz?

      • It's one of the worst from any phone I've used in over 5 years easily. Even call quality is terrible.

    • +4

Absolutely agree with this. Sound quality on the 5 is well below par. I ditched it for a 4a5g. Sure, you lose water resistance and wireless charging (not a big thing for me), but gain extra screen real estate and the jack.

    • Agree, the earpiece and loudspeaker volume is pretty quiet and kind of useless if you're in a moderate to loud environment.

It's a good phone otherwise, not really enough of a problem to sell the P5 for a 4a 5G though? Usually take a big hit selling anything these days.

Does the 4a still get the free photo storage?
I believe all pixel storage will come out of own storage soon, already pay 2.50$/month for 100gb so no real drama

    • +1

      Agree, underscreen speaker is horrible.
Sometimes you can hear audio vibration.

      Still a great phone though

    • You use your phone as a phone? Weird.

      • funny thing is it's shit as a phone as you can't hear a fkn thing on it

  • +5

Pixel 4a is also $499 which will reduce to $475 with the code.

    • +1

Great deal on the 4a 5G too. I wish I'd bought that rather than the P5 but it released later in the year and I was impatient.

  • +1

Good deal - have claimed this with price protection :D

    • +1

Same, will lodge this morning, another $40 vack

  • +1

    Love love love this phone.

  • -1

  • Will storage be an issue?

  • +2

Most retailers have the Moto G9 Plus 4G or Moto G 5G Plus with 6GB RAM for half the price, I would recommend those relative to value unless you are after Google firmware updates and features.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/627350

That price includes 5% with the JB coupon, if you want from Officeworks with AfterPay, they don't include coupons with price beat gurantee, but the amount they reduce is by is also 5% so you should be able to go to Officeworks for same price and use AfterPay if you prefer.

    • +1

JB also has Afterpay as well.

      • +2

I just found out tonight, got an extra $20 discount on top from it.

  • -1

Crap phone for notifications. OK when you are at home on wifi. When on mobile data it seems to go to sleep then you get a whole lot of notifications in one go - late.

Notifications work better on the cheap $99 LG K51s I purchased a couple weeks ago from JB. Not perfect, but better that the Pixel 5.

    • +5

My notifications work fine, sounds like an odd issue!

  • +1

Realme 7 5g is also ok sale at jb right now at $375 even before 5% dicount.

It has all the great 5g bands

    Better 120hz refresh rate too

Cpu is within 2% same speed as 765sd

  • does this model still get the free Google Photos backup storage?

    • +3

Unlimited high quality, if you want to preserve original quality you will need to transfer it the old fashioned way

    • +2

Yes, but compressed. Video quality is made to mush

  • 4a 5G Black is $616.55 with this coupon

  • +1

Really happy with the Pixel 5. Running Android 12 beta on it and finished the day today with 70% battery.

Upgraded from Pixel 2. Not a power user. Don't game on my phone. Just wanted something with good battery life, a good user experience and the ability to take good photos.

Haven't really found any significant downsides to it yet. Maybe the built in speaker quality if I was nit picking.

    • -1

The build in speaker is really terrible, you dont need to be 'nit picking' to say it.
The microphone isnt as good as well. All my other phones hear me better.
OS is too minimal with too few features. They are like Apple but they dont have the Apple user interface and usability.
Build quality is average, buttons are of very poor quality. Also, rear fingerprint reader? lol how do i unlock it at my desk?
Camera is top notch but the app is terrible, interface is lacking. So are all stock apps, their design theme needs to be fired.
Stock launcher is subpar and third party launchers dont play well with gestures. I press the microphone to talk on gboard and there is a 1.5-2 second delay until it actually starts listening

Very average phone, midrange, no innovation no fast charging, no face id, plastic, rear reader like its 2014, average vibration motor, zero customization, bugs

I ditched my iphone 11 for a pixel 5 and it was a downgrade in almost everything except the size, i was very happy to sell pixel 5 at a loss and get an S21 base, ten times a better phone

Pixel 5 is a $600 phone, at best

      • +2

Agree with most sentiments, PD charging is fast btw, just use the included charger or similar spec. I've never bothered with wireless charging, far too slow. The speakers and microphone is disappointing, battery life is great.

Pure Google and no Samsung bloatware is good, fast updates. Also purchased Nova launcher for $1 but haven't used as it doesn't support guestures as you said.

Anyway after a few price drops out will be around $600-700, $750 isn't too bad, but not worth $1000.

Anyway high end iPhones and s21 are more like $1500-2k so depends how much you want to spend

        • -2

          PD charging is fast btw

It's only 18w, that's slow. I charge overnight anyway, but when i want to emergency-top up, phone is too slow to reach 50%. Even my s21's 25w feel slow in today's standards

Pure Google and no Samsung bloatware is good, fast updates

What does 'bloatware' even mean? Bixby routines aren't bloatware, goodlock aint no bloatware, one hand operation+ aint no bloatware. All samsung services are discreet and out of the way.
Also, what do 'fast updates' mean? Pixel 5 has literally the same features as Samsung did in 2015, phone is way too naked. You want to get the update faster than me, but the features you'll get i had them since a while ago, the irony.
My S21 is already on June security patch (yeah i flashed it manually)

Anyway after a few price drops out will be around $600-700, $750 isn't too bad, but not worth $1000.
Anyway high end iPhones and s21 are more like $1500-2k so depends how much you want to spend

Who talks about 'high end phones'? Base iphones and base s21 is what im comparing pixel 5 too, they are way better devices with similar RRP (s21 is actually cheaper with Samsung incentives)

          • @nikoris: Define fast charging this one charges 60% in 15 min or less

Anyone can root their phone and get the nightlies etc, I was done with that stuff 10y ago.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about S21 Ultras and the flagship phones.

    • Love mine, great size fits in the pocket much better than the over sized samsung's in this price bracket. Google photos dropping support for non pixel phone - unlimited picture uploads another huge bonus and the battery lasts for days. Stock android which is best android that receives updates way before the rest (if ever) is the cherry on top.

    • You can get all that from an S20FE 5g for hundreds less though

  • I'm waiting for it to drop further, hopefully soon

  • Tempting to upgrade from my Pixel 3xl that might be the first Pixel to become a curved model.(Angry heifer kicked me smashing the back and curving the phone) but going to make the pos last till at least the iPhone 13 releases.

  • I was tossing up between this and the S20 FE but having done the comparison think i'll stick with the S20. Bigger battery, bigger screen, SD card, more RAM and that's without looking into the comments above of quality issues on the Pixel.

    • Sounds reasonable, how much is the S20 FE (edit nvm, $700, similar pricing)

bigger screen is nice but uses more battery.
I found the Pixel 3 XL screen size good, don't need a tablet then (not that i have one anyway)
The smaller size phone is nice in the pocket but depends what you want, both good.

      • Sorry, meant to say better rather than bigger. Agree size is completely preference of user.

    • +1

Yeah you need that extra ram to run all the bloatware that samsung puts on your phone….and the battery will be chewed by the bigger screen and crap they put on top of android.

Pixel5 is a great barebones android experience. I love it. I can squeeze two days out of it with music and regular use.

  • Fark! Had dramas yesterday arvo trying to buy a jb gift card at woolies with my woolies gift cards.. didnt read the TCs… ended up buying phone near full price (sales person gave me 30 off) .. and now this!

Good news, called JB and they have a 14 day price guarantee

  • +1

So people are finding the wireless charging and waterproof and lack of jack and slightly smaller screen is worth the extra $200 over the 4a 5g? Am i missing something or are these the main differences?

    • +1

For me it was the extra bump in RAM and battery and 90hz refresh rate. 4a 5G is better value but I thought I'd pay the extra for a better experience

  • Is it worth upgrading from a Pixel 3?

  • +1

Good deal, posting this on a pixel 5 myself.

  • Google must be kicking themselves for not realising this hardware promo sooner!

Eg. Cutting most people off the free photo storage

Which is forcing everyone to 'consider' a pixel device now…

I am wondering though, can we pay for photos storage via India etc like we do for YTM / Premium?

  • and we all thought Google Store was the cheapest @799.20…..at least they should honor better warranty direct
