  • Seems like good value for a brand name 5W handheld. I prefer GME but Uniden is up there.

  • I'm looking for a long range (10-20km) set (5 or 6). Budget is $1 - $1.5k
I have no knowledge on these thing. Could someone please give me some suggestions

How about buy 6 of these and send me $500?

Or 6 Baofeng UV-5R and send me $1300.

        • 4W and not approved UHF CB radio in Australia. No way 10km unless you're on flat sea.

      • I swear I didn't know I could do that.
Honestly though are these worth it?

        • To be clear, i just clicked the link saw 17km range and posted. No idea about the product its actually somethting I would consider if people said it was OK. Just to have in a glove box when mobile out of range, don't want a fixed antenna. Maybe these good for a convoy?

5W handheld to handheld will go maybe 3-5km in my experience as long as there's not too many buildings, trees or hills in the way. These can use a repeater but repeaters aren't everywhere. Check https://tropinet.com/uhf-repeaters/

As I understand it, most handheld's have a 1/2db gain antenna which send the signal in a sphere from the antenna so the distance is as far vertical as it is horizontal. Higher db gain antenna's flatten that signal to make it more horizontal but buildings, trees or hills in the way.

When driving long distance, I used to remove my GME TX6100 antenna and use a magnet mount RFI 6db antenna https://offroadlife4x4.com.au/product/rfi-cd63-71-55-uhf-cb-… on the roof of the car to get better range.

For a test, I put the 6db RFI antenna on my veranda roof in Blackburn and took a handheld 5W to Mt Dandenong lookout, approx 18km as the bird flies. Blackburn could hear me, not well, from the lookout but I didn't get a signal in return on the stubby antenna the TX6100 came with.
