These are good - I got them last time

  • Stuck at "submitting your order". High traffic volume =.=

  • extremely slow

  • Do these go the 3km's? I was reading the review on DSE and it says 100 metres… but thats one review. Anyone bought and can confirm getting good distances?

    • Maybe I shouldn't buy this

    • I wonder if they tried a different channel.

    • I've bought these and I think we used some cheapo asian batteries and we could barely get a signal about 10-15 meters.

Another time we got it about 150-200 meters within crowds.

  • Why are they missing 3 UHF channels?

    • Channels 61, 62 and 63 are "restricted for possible future use".

  • Bought these last time, really happy with them. My toddlers think they're amazing. :)

  • I guess these are okay for the money. We used them for a car trip and the range was pretty poor. We were in close proximity (100m?), fresh eneloops and there was cackle and pop throughout the journey. It cleared up at some points, but I don't think they were too reliable. We had four as well, so it wasn't an off set.

Having said that, they performed alright on the perisher slopes. We did get interference from all the channels, something along the lines of "threee, twooo, oneeee, GOOOOO!" - i think it was the milo kids races or something in the mornings.

  • What do i have to buy if i want to talk to truckies and entertain myself when im driving? These don't do it do they?

    • +2

You can talk to truckies with these on channel 40, I'm not sure about the entertainment value though.

      • I guess that depends on whether you want to expand your knowledge of swear words or not LOL

  • Google Chrome doesn't let me check out.
    IE8 works

  • I got a 2 sets with 40 channel for the same price, so this is a good price. I did notice however they are not economical on batteries so if you are going on a trip then stock up on good batteries.

  • Nice timing - my kids got me to buy $15 "Cars 2" branded walkie talkies at Kmart

They were utter crap - would not work even 10m apart.

Returned them and have been looking for some cheap but more serious ones for the kids to have a bit of a play with… Will have to avoid nasty channels…

    • We like Wouxen UVDP1's (but they cost over $100 each, for a better made & better equipped handheld, that has built-in FM radio (not-digital) band,
they spec the Transmit power at 4 Watts, of the 5 Watts max allowed power).

For those who want a full 5 Watts transmit power, we like Yaesu FT-277R's (or, if you prefer: whatever 80-channel Yaesu or ICOM handheld your local CB dealer has to offer.

And… didn't we have an OB deal, recently, offering a pair of 5 watt radios - each with inbuilt GPS, so they can poll & track each other's location (when outside)?

Price for two: 2x for $600 (incl S+H), from memory.

  • Could come in handy for soundwave

    • Especially when you tap into the security channels and start whispering crap about bags of pills around the place and watch security go hunting :)

      • same as with security at local shopping centres, but I think they use more specialised channels that these UHF radios cannot pick up.

        • Some security companies use $1200+ radios, which you can program the exact band into, stopping people listening in. But then again, I'm sure there are OzB companies too, that will use these… Haha.

  • 2 x 3 AAA batteries is going to be a pain - need to find some decent but reasonably priced rechargables…

    • or just get aldi batteries? Aldi tested their batteries against energerizer's battery and they did pretty good

    • Sanyo Eneloops. DSE has the lowest prices from memory.

  • Manual says:

    • Transmit Power is 0.5 Watt (vs maximum allowed transmit power: 5.0 Watts)

    • Each uses 3x AAA Alkaline cells [so expect to pay -heaps- over their life!]

Your local Jaycar's may have these on the shelf, for the same price.

(It seems to be a Uniden clearance price.)

At least they seem to have 77 (of the new "80" CB channels.

    I'd say they'd be OK as gifts for kids, who play in the same yard;
ie, range is likely dim. :-/

  • They're good toys for kids. I've owned 2 0.5W walkie talkies from Binatone. Their range isn't very good in convoy of more than 3 cars. I'm looking at 2W Oricom models for $119 off ebay, but unfortunately, they are 4xAAA. The 3xAA units are another jump in price. However, I do have the Duracell LSD AA and AAA batts from the last OzB deal, so I might be OK in terms of battery running costs.

    • See my post re the wouxun.
get the external speaker mike, and external antenna and mag mount for travelling in the car.
Also plug it into the cigarette lighter socket for power with an adapter.
once the antenna is outside you will find a great improvement in the range.
plus you get to use 5w if needed.

  • Good find OP, for $30 they are very good value.

If you want value for money that does lots of services, as IVI says, get the Woxun at about $120
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wouxun-KG-UVD1P-136-174-400-480-M….

Use rechargables and i would expect easily a few hundred meters without an issue without obstructions.

    • Approved for use in Australia?

help! help! my name is timmy o'toole and i'm trapped down a well!

    • Thanks mate. Milk just shot out my nose.

  • I recently bought two UHF walkie talkies for my kids, and a few packs of the AAA Eneloop deal that was listed here a few weeks ago. The UHFs were from Repco - spend $50, and you could buy two UHF 2-ways for $20. I think they were Oricom brand. They are low power of course, and take 3x AAA cells each.

I used to be into CBs years ago, and I know a bit about electrical/electronics. So I really didn't think they would be much chop. Just basic toys for the kids to play with for a while in the yard until they broke.

But then we used them when we drove two cars from Orange to Newcastle NSW. What a shock I got. They were just GREAT. At times the cars were 300/400 meters apart and moving at 80km/hr. But they were clear as a bell.

Anyway, the reason I mentioned them is, I think Repco are selling a higher power pair of the same brand. Can't recall the exact price, but it was still pretty reasonable. Of course nothing is going to better a real, dedicated, car-mounted, UHF. But I am still reeling at the quality our $20 pair of toy walkie talkies managed!
