Spare Modem for FTTN nbn

Hi all, I am currently with Aussie Broadband for NBN provider and the connection in my place is FTTN. I am using modem that was provided by ABB: Netcomm NF10W.

I am currently looking for a spare modem that I can use just in case my Netcomm died all of sudden and to avoid Internet connection interruption. So as spare, I don't need fancy one, as long as it works. I am looking at TP-LINK TD-W9970 which can be found for around $63 delivered on eBay. Can I confirm that this modem will work for me (type of NBN I have) and whether this will be comparable (in performance) to Netcomm NF10W?

Thanks in advance.

  • The TP-Link will work with your FTTN. I think TP-Link is a budget brand, but so is Netcomm so it should be comparable.

If I was you I wouldn't bother keeping a spare on hand, Officeworks is open late. If it dies in the night could you get by with mobile hotspot until morning?

Hi No, thank you for your response and for confirming it works for FTTN.

Another reason to have a spare I guess in the situation where the Internet stopped working but I am not sure whether it is the modem or something else. So having something at hand that I know working would help ruling something out.

I wonder if I would upgrade to something better and keep my Netcomm NF10W as spare, what that would be. I don't need the WiFi part because I have Tenda Nova and it works well covering the whole house. I just need a modem and I would spend up let's say $150.

I use a vr600v router. Despite the low cost brand TP-Link, performance is good. Price a Fitch over at $160 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261455269690?epid=17032164745&ha…

I would look on Facebook Marketplace.

There should be plenty of cheap modems (some still unopened) to purchase as a backup.

Just keep in mind when swapping out modems, you generally need to restart the NCD or NTD. In your case of FTTN, your best option would be to go on to the ABB app and Kick the connection. Otherwise it may take 15-30mins for the connection to start working on the new modem.

    • Every time I need to restart my current modem, it would like a good 5 - 10 minutes or probably a bit more to get reconnected. Is that something related to this? That's actually what gave me a feeling that the modem might die soon out of the blue.

      • Nah the modem syncing is unrelated.

Telstra SmartModem Gen 2 - usually around $20 or sometimes less on Facebook Marketplace

    • Plus bonus Telstra 4G failover.

      • You won't get the Telstra 4G failover on second-hand devices. I believe the modem only takes a special sim card too.

        • It used to work. Has this changed recently?

          • @Twix: My understanding is that the sim card is tied to the Telstra NBN account. If the modem/router has been sold because the original owner has closed their Telstra NBN account, the sim card should also have been closed and therefore should not work. If the original owner has not closed their Telstra NBN account (for instance, maybe they've bought a new modem/router), the sim card should still work as long as Telstra believe the original owner is still using it. But maybe I'm wrong.

        • I put in my Boost SIM card in my DJA0230 and 4G worked fine. I tried with an amaysim SIM but couldn't get it working even after adding the APN to the network file (can't remember exactly).
