Been hunting for a decent and cheap wireless router to replace my old Netgear R7000.

Saw https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/617619 the other day but was thinking if I can go any cheaper and found an alternative to it.

From what I understand, RT-AX58U has identical hardware to TUF-AX3000.

Edit: Just found out that Officeworks is selling it for $399. Might be able to make it a better deal by pricematching.

Edit 2: OW order confirmation. Yay!

Not sure you'll notice a difference to your current one. If you're NBN is only 100mb, then going from 1900 to 3000mb WiFi speed is not going to mange that faster. Plus WiFi 6 devices are few and far between.

It's more for transferring files / streaming data around a home network.

Ok fair enough. Even then your SSD is probably only able to reach 550mbs.

        • +5

You are confusing mbps with mb/s. Even a 3000mbps router (and they add the 2.4g speed on as well) will not max out a sata ssd.

@Heero is correct, I have home server setup and would occasionally transfer huge data. The fast transfer is appreciated.

And as others will/have point(ed) out, you're confusing bit and byte :)

Network speed is generally advertised as bit, whereas transfer rate in OS is generally using byte. 550 MByte is about 4400 MBit. Hope that helps :)

          • @juns: Yeah, i went from the telstra smart modem to this router and my internal transfer speeds increased 5x over. Moving stuff to my NAS is a much more pleasant experience now.

    • Hardware description for VPN traffic might make significant difference - that's the only think that makes me think about updating my RT-AC68u

      • Fast chipset in the AC 86U might be better in some instances such as VPN.

even pci cards for PCs operate on either 2.4g or 5g not both at the same time and if you use 5g then it’s shorter range ……

      • pci cards for PCs operate on either 2.4g or 5g not both at the same time

        that's interesting. I didn't realise that.

  • Might be a silly question but does this support FTTN NBN. What are the other alternatives that supports FTTN?

    • +5

If you plug a VDSL modem into it in bridge mode.

    • +3

This is a router only. You would still need to use a modem that is Fttn compatible.

  • Wondering if anyone can help out, if my connection is only 50/20, are there any cheaper models out there?

If you care about coverage, then this is probably a better alternative: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/612350

Although people from previous deals on Tenda seems to suggest that their software/security is not that good.

      • Just a one bedroom apartment, so not going to need a mesh I think?

How big of an area are you trying to cover and how many devices will connect to it?

This Asus or This Netgear would easily keep up with your NBN speed. Shouldn't need anything over an AC2300 for it to not be the bottle neck in the system.

Can also go the Xiaomi route which should give excellent coverage and speed

Just a one bedroom apartment, probably around 6 devices (3 laptops, 1 smart phone, 1 switch, 1 ps4 ..) Been thinking about the AX20 as it seems the cheapest out of all the suggestions that I saw on whirlpool though still a bit more expensive for my taste.

        • Any cheap wireless router is fine for your requirement, use LAN cable to PS4,
and ensure to set your router to restart regularly to help with relatively stable performance ,
eg: daily at midnight or at least once a week.

  • I'm on Telstra 5G using the HTC 5G Hub, will this be a good enough router if I want to have a better WiFi connection at home?
    Any comment is welcome.

    • Depending on your definition of better, if you're referring to wifi coverage and you live in big house, then a mesh system is definitely better than this router.

Because I live in relatively small house, have home servers and would occasionally transfer huge amount of data around, my definition of better is faster speed.

A bit more context is required.

Also, I am not sure about the HTC 5G Hub, others might have a better idea.

I thought the TUF one has better heatsinks?

There is also this for about $70 less https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/605216
I bought one and yes, it was all in Chinese but just using Google Translate I as able to set it up pretty quickly.
I went from an Archer D7 so it is like chalk and cheese. More stable, longer range and of course, faster

    • Great suggestion for people wanting the speed!

I guess the point I forgot to mention is the flexibility of other firmware you can install on the asus router. Because I've been using dd-wrt for my netgear and planning to flash asuswrt on that router.
