  • Is this better than wifi extender? Like xiaomi wifi extender? To extend the wifi to the house across the road

    • +2

I use the xiaomi wifi extender before purchasing this mesh wifi system. Honestly, once you have a mesh wifi system, you will not look back to have a wifi extender. The switch from one node to another is so seamlessly unlike the wifi extender. I suggest you might want to get the MW6 rather than MW3 if you need a high-speed ethernet connection. If you just want to extend your wifi signal in a budget, this one is perfect.

It's way better than wifi extender. I was using a belkin range extender and was getting like 3mbps at the other end of my house. With this mesh system I'm getting 40mbps. The other issue I had with range extender was even if you use the same network settings it wouldn't switch between them seamlessly and you would find it's still connected to the extender when you are next to the router.

    • It might not reach to the neighbours across the road. Use outdoor rated access points.

    • i'm currently using Netgear AC750 WiFi Extender at my house and it gets around 2-3 bars across the road but it drops out often at night. Its more just to "borrow" internet for eufy IP camera for the house across the road. So just wonder this mesh wifi will be any better.

      • It will depend on node placement and how far away the neighbours house is. There is no way of knowing without testing it for yourself.

  • Is this similar to the deco M5?

    • +1

Deco m5 has better specs and more positive feedback. This is a budget system.

    • The Deco M5 competes against the Tenda MW6. Check that your ISP doesn't require the router to support VLAN 802.1q. The Wi-Fi coverage varies between each model and how many nodes you purchase.

      Tenda Nova MW3

      2 WAN/LAN ports on each.
      Wi-Fi AC1200.
600Mhz CPU and 64MB of RAM.
      No VLAN 802.1q support.

      Tenda Nova MW6

      2 WAN/LAN ports on each.
      Wi-Fi AC1200.
      Single-core 1Ghz CPU and 128MB of RAM.
      No VLAN 802.1q support.
      Maximum of around 700Mbps Ethernet.
      Up to around 400Mbps Wi-Fi.

      TP-Link Deco M5

      2 WAN/LAN ports on each.
      Wi-Fi AC1300.
Quad-core CPU and 256MB of RAM.
      VLAN 802.1q support.
      Maximum of around 850Mbps Ethernet.
      Up to around 460Mbps Wi-Fi.
      More in depth parental controls.
      Amazon Alexa.
Wi-Fi 6 upgrade path: purchase a Wi-Fi 6 Deco and use it with your Deco M5.

  • I recently bought used Kogan mesh which is rebranded MW3 on the cheap. Works very well as AP after bridging. The only thing is there is not GUI accessible from PC.

    • In addition to needing the app on a phone/tablet to change settings, the channel of the 2.4 GHz band is fixed to 6, and the wireless channel of the 5 GHz band is fixed to 40, so can't mess about with those unfortunately.

  • so i grabbed this and followed the app set up and I'm getting barely anything in terms of speed output from the mesh network…

I'm on NBN FTTN so I've got the arris box connected to TPG router and then the Tenda connected to one of the ethernet ports and I get less than 1 Mbps when I'm on a 100 mbps plan.

Have tried changing the tenda settings to bridge and no luck there either… thoughts?

    • Well if you connect your computer to the TPG router, what speed do you get from there ?

      • 120mpbs

        • That's pretty awesome that Ur getting 120Mbit from a 100Mbit connection!

If you Ethernet through the primary MW3, is it just as fast, or still stick at 1mbit?
          Reset and try again?
U might have a faulty unit.

    • I bought a 2-pack of these, found that they had pretty good coverage. But speed wasn't all that great. So I ended up buying a second 2-pack, which really improved the wifi coverage. But still had issues with speed. Because my house is (was) very long, and the NBN connection is right up the front of the house, the back of the house (where the study is) didn't get a good signal. So I bought a third pair. Good signal in the study, but still not great speeds. No problems when direct-wired to the NBN modem.

So I set out to do some testing. I connected a laptop to the extra ethernet socket on the first node, which was plugged right into the NBN modem. So all the node was doing was routing between ethernet and ethernet. Still poor speed. Turned out that download speeds were fine (50+Mbps) but upload speed was really awful, like averaging 3Mbps, and fluctuating quite a lot, but never going as high as 10Mbps. I was easily getting 20+Mbps upload when direct-connected to NBN modem. The fluctuations were usually regular, with peaks at approximately every 10 seconds.

So after checking that the firmware was the latest, and powering down the rest of the nodes, I did a factory reset, but it still had poor upload speed. Switched to bridged mode, still poor speed. Factory reset another node and tried that, no better. Tried a third node (in case I had a bad 2-pack), no better.

I emailed [email protected] asking how I could get it working properly. I never received a response.

I ended up returning all three packs for a refund on the basis that they were not fit for purpose, and not as advertised (website says "fast and stable internet connection"). Instead I found a way to run a long ethernet cable and reused an old router running Gargoyle as a second access point, and it worked flawlessly for months until I moved house.

I don't know if the MW6 is any better. But I suspect they have better processes and more RAM so might work acceptably well.

      • Choice has included the MW6 in their "recommended" list (they haven't reviewed the MW3).

  • This is down to $84 now.

Price seems to fluctuate, noticed it was as low as $83.50 yesterday.

  • $79 now
