I will never buy such a conf from Dell, there is no upgrade possibility, apart the CPU and GPU… Keep in mind you cannot change motherboard to get a newer

    • +30

You realise that is fine for a lot of people. I buy a PC then do a mid life upgrade of GPU then sell the entire computer and replace it.

Back when I was fifteen I used to cherry pick and assemble every part. Now as a thirty year old on a good income I don't care as much and been there done that with assembling and don't concern myself as much anymore for RAM that will give me 1 more FPS if I custom built.

Plus the era of custom building is finished for another 18-24 months. As PCPartpicker comments show on most techfast/Dell builds then value based buyers are better off pre-built. Warranty and preassembled if you're time poor like me.

      • So true, the time for selecting the components and putting it together plus making sure it works def worth the extra $.

      • Can't agree more, if my 5 yo cutom built pc dies or simply gets too old I'll definitely go for a pre-built. Might even go for a mac given little to 0 time for gaming, sigh.

      • +3

Well it's unfair to conflate prebuillt with the inability to customise. I agree that prebuillt is a good and happy path but (profanity) if I want some locked down nonsense which might come back to bite me if I do decide an upgrade is a good option. Who knows what the pc market looks like 2 years from now when the computer is less cutting edge.

        Plus the case is awful.

        Preach!

I used to curse OEMs, until I did sales for Dell then slowly changed my view.

Like you say, it’s the peace of mind that comes with service/warranty that’s of greater value nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favour of DIY and the fun that comes along with it, but I just don’t have the time for it now (nor am I as fussed about getting the top of the line components)

      • Good use of words dude :)

I've got a list of parts. Order them at computer alliance, pickup after lunch and assemble same night within couple hours over 3-6 can a of beer. I select really big full tower case in n$400+ range, make my own custom cooling. Select reputable psu with 10years warranty. Make it all neat and nice. Transfer my old ssds HDDs across. Put my own win 10 pro with $5 AliExpress licence key. So it can be close to alienware, but I have no issues with such a heavy packed case where psu is sitting on top of GPU and there is no way I can cool GPU efficiently while mining. I'm working full time, but consider spending 2-3 hours enjoying unpacking and putting things together is a very relaxing experience. I had over 6 assemblies over last 18 years and never had any issues . Only once my kid dropped a screw inside of psu and cooked it, GPU fried with no reason and once I had another psu fan stopped working and overheating. But it is common thing and a prebuild system can have the same issue. So I find it no problem to build custom PC with proper mb (not a bastardized Dell version), my own selection of components. The only reason I'd go for prebuild now is GPU… Though I've read reviews the cooling system is kind of shite for Dell version of 3080

        • Definitely merits of both. If you want plug and play and warranty support and likely a bit cheaper/easier to get parts at the moment then Dell is the way. If you are unhappy with how the Dell is performing (e.g. throttling or crashes etc) I usually find that they will offer you a full refund no problem once you start talking about the ACCC and fair trading etc. If you want max performance and control over parts and the ability to upgrade absolutely anything then nothing wrong with doing it yourself if you can get the parts.

        • +1

I hope your kid knows you love him >.<

I would've dropped to my knees and wept.

      • Couldn't agree more!!!

When it’s time to upgrade, absolutely pointless fruiting around, just buy a new machine. WhoTF upgrades these days…..!

  • Comes to $3,199.08 with my $55 off discount. Does anyone else have these dell codes I could use? Im not sure if they stack

    • I don't have any codes, but cashrewwards will get you another 6% back (almost $200)

    • If you are a student and have unidays discount it will stack.

      • +1

        Nah doesn’t stack

It has this discount applied when you add to cart
        Includes 25% Off - $1050 Cash Off - Ends Thu, 15 Apr 2021 - $1,050.00
Able to stack LOVEKEANU to get $244.93

        Adding UniDays removes "Includes 25% Off - $1050 Cash Off - Ends Thu, 15 Apr 2021 - $1,050.00"

        • Ah my bad. Was looking at a different model where either these codes offer better value than the regular discount or they do stack.

  • +3

Similar spec R12 is the same price if you use the Unidays discount.

    • Can you link which one you're referring to please?

      • +4

        https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/gaming-and-games/new-alienwa…

Let me know if you need the discount code.

        • The price you linked to was $3299… for about 3 seconds, then changed to $4,700.40.

          • @Chris McMahon: You need to use the coupon to it back to the discounted price

        • By the code, do you mean the Unidays discount code? What discount are we talking here? Cheers

          • @pharcyde: Dell has a coupon code for Uniday members, similar to what is provided for Catch

        • I used unidays and stacked lovekeanu, came to about $3497

        • Are the codes unique?

          • @PlagueistheCheap: Yeah mate just logged into Unidays and they are single use codes, but there does appear to be many of them.

        • @huey
Can I have the UNIDAYS code please?

          Thanks

          MM

        • Can I have a unidays code please?

It seems UNIDAYS run out of Dell codes

          Thanks

        • Are you able to generate a code? On the unidays portal for me, it says "We couldn't issue you a code." I wonder if it's my account or a more global thing.

        • Hi Huey,
May I have a Unidays code for Dell R12 please.
          Thanks very much :)

Wondering who spend over $3000 for a desktop nowadays.

    • +4

I'd imagine many would have extra disposable income because they haven't used their money on holidays overseas, then I suppose the next best thing is to spend that money on a nice gaming rig.

      • +1

        Or pay off mortgage sooner:)

    • Me looks away who spent ~$2900 on a 3090

      • Basically an appreciating asset at this point.

    • I did, beast mode engaged.

    • How many people spend over 2k for a phone these days?

    • Mine cost 7k +. And I just bought a 3k TV to use as a monitor.

  • Too much for gaming. Hitting 60 soon. lol

    • +2

You're only as old as who you're feeling ;)

  • +3

The temptation to upgrade from a 3700X/2080Ti…

    • +1

Only if your current system goes to someone who'll appreciate it!

Not quite the 98% saving of other deals tho

    • what do you mean?

  • +2

Just ordered one. Turns out I got a Cashrewards cashback of 177.49 and not 195.24. This is because Cashrewards gives you 6% of the total prices EXCLUDING THE GST. So they subtract the GST from the total amount of 3,254.08, which comes to 2958.25. 6% of that comes to 177.49. Thus I paid 3077.31 including the cashback. Not the worst deal in the current 3080 market.

    • Thanks, updated post.

    • how long did it take for CR to track the amount?
      I'm still waiting after 3 days >_>

      • Mine was basically 5 minutes.

      • Mine is more than 24 hours now.

      • It tracked within a few minutes for me. Obviously it has not been approved yet so I cannot withdraw. But it showed up pretty much within minutes. Also they sent me an email to notify me that it has been tracked.

  • Looks like this week's configuration deals has brought this deal for $3,254 with the 2TB HDD and KF processor back.

  • Sitting on the fence with this. 3k is just a lot of dosh

    • If you're dead set on a 3080 then you might need to wait a while for a whole system (with warranty) to fall below the $3k mark.

      • +1

Actually I'd be happy with a 3060 but the prices are just ridiculous and i don't want another techfast build

        • If you're aiming at the 3060/3070 point, there's a lot more options so maybe spec up what you want and then be ready to pull the trigger when a good deal comes up. Assuming you also aren't planning to mine, then you might also be willing to go prebuilt or even buy models with less exotic cooling since it won't make a difference in normal gaming usage (vs 24/7 mining).

          • @jace88: Prebuilt is fine as long as i don't have to deal with crappy components that stump my whole system

  • Hey guys, still trying to decide my build. What would be better?

    11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 11700KF (8-Core, 16MB Cache, 3.6GHz to 5GHz w/Intel® Turbo Boost Max)

    or

    10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 10700KF (8-Core, 16MB Cache, 3.8GHz to 5.1GHz w/Turbo Boost Max 3.0)

  • I ordered one of one of these on April 12th. The estimated delivery date is 21st May. Their site isn't showing that it's in production yet. But I am seriously thinking about cancelling my order at this stage. Firstly because I had mining in mind when I ordered it but now mining profitability is going down and is rumored to go down much more in near future, secondly I got a 1080ti which is still good for gaming and I don't even get time to game that much these days, and thirdly, there is already a better Alienware deal where I can get the same PC for the same price but with an extra monitor thrown in. This tells me GPU prices are coming down soon and I will probably see a techfast deal with similar prices for around 700 AUD cheaper like we were getting in Nov. Maybe I can get some advice from fellow Ozbargainers?

    • Given the recent clearance deal for cheaper which has the monitor and additional Alienware accessories (the $3761 deal dropped down to $3231 before cashback), I personally would've cancelled and repurchased to save $500 for one month wait; or alternatively just rebuying this deal which I estimate would've been closer to $2900ish (hard to say since Dell site no longer has it listed).

Upto you though. If you're buying this purely as a mining machine in which case ROI is very important, I probably wouldn't be buying again either… there's even more uncertainty too with GPUs with crypto locks potentially built into the silicon (who knows how effective they'll be), etc… maybe you'd be better off buying a Techfast PC where at least you can always part out and switch GPUs easily.
