Anyone know the difference between this model and this model?
Was covered in this comment a while back:
Model explanations:
MS-42-66-OBJ
Range-Litres-Spec-Colour
MJ = Convection + Inverter
MS = Inverter
42 = 42L (1200W) with sensor cook
25 = 25L (1000W) no sensor cook
23 = 23L (1000W) no sensor cook
66 = touch panel + knob front
96 = touch panel only, slightly lower RRP (but same spec/features)
36 = touch panel only, no sensor cook (42L model)
OSS = silver frame (black door)
OBS = black frame (black door) - In this case it's OBC, seems like a refresh with a slightly different lettering.
DW = white
Features are identical between models unless stated. Ranked highest RRP to lowest for each category
@doweyy: Thanks, also looks like the buttons are hidden when the door is closed for a sleeker look on the slightly more expensive OBC model
@doweyy: Thanks. Tho I don't get how 42 (sensor) and 36 (non sensor) can go together on this 4236 model.
@justtoreply: Hmm bit of a conflict there actually, the 4236DB sensor cooking seems to be included for the 42L model on the LG website.. But then I can't seem to actually see it on the model itself whereas the 96 has it inside as an option as a press able button.
Only thing I can think of is that "Proof/Cook" on the 4236 is actually Sensor Cook, I have the 4266 and it's in the same spot as the Proof/Cook button.
@justtoreply: As an owner of a 4296 I can clarify that the first two digits (42) refer to the microwave's capacity, and the last two refer to the model. Mine is the 96 so has the flush front, this one is the 36 so has the touch panel buttons (which the longer door of the 96 hide) exposed.
compare here, no major difference I can see
Regarding even heating see eug's comment.
It's sleek and modern, looks nice in the kitchen. Sadly it has no timer so my wife won't let me get it :(
I have no idea why they removed this function…
Don't people also say it interferes with the WI-FI?
Why you need timer
Sadly it has no timer so my wife won't let me get it :(
What do you mean by no timer?
Don't people also say it interferes with the WI-FI?
Is there a microwave oven that doesn't? :)
To clarify, my wife uses a timer for the oven, stove etc by using the microwave. I tell her that her phone or the oven can do that but she has always used the microwave..
Crazy I know but some battles can't be won. LG removed this function. So its an ability to use the microwave timer without using the microwave.
Get her a Google Home or equiv.
I bought a timer when I moved into my new place and it's still in its plastic package because I realised my new Google Home covers that task adequately.
I can relate to that, I wish logic would prevail in a number of our household systems!
Most microwave oven has a timer function that allows user to set for other purposes
(just count down and alarm when times out without cooking)
This microwave oven doesn't have this feature
The count down (timer) feature has to "cook" something to trigger
all microwaves do that. dont place your router near them.
My router is directly under the microwave and I've never experienced that.
Mines right next to it. Never as issue.
I literally can’t listen to anything via Bluetooth headphones when mine is on. Never happened with any previous microwave.
The shielding is very poor on this particular microwave.
Same with mine, major interference on 2.4ghz WiFi or bluetooth, 5Ghz band is fine.
I have this exact microwave.
I have no idea why they removed this function…
Yep, mild inconvenience.
Don't people also say it interferes with the WI-FI?
Yes, this interferes with my wifi much worse than the old Microwave. I guess worse shielding on this one. I can't place the router somewhere else to mitigate it like the other guy said.
At the end of the day though, it's a microwave. It heats stuff up. It does that reasonably well.
Apple Airpods and Nintendo Switch controllers don't like it.
It interferes quite badly with 2.4ghz wifi. I tell my household not to use it when I'm on video calls for work. My really old microwave didn't have this issue but that one was only 650w whereas this one is 1200w.
Doesn't seem to have an issue with 5ghz wifi.
wuh-PSSSH!
I killed my last Panasonic microwave while trying to use the timer. On a busy day of cooking, I needed to set the timer to 10 minutes but I instead started the microwave for 10 minutes, with nothing in it. Next thing I know, the microwave won't work anymore.
Funnily enough, I bought this very LG microwave to replace the dead Panasonic. My wife was very happy that this one didn't have a timer 😂.
The LG has been very good so far. Much faster than the less powerful Panasonic and looks pretty good too. The glossy black door is a fingerprint magnet though.
Bro, it's 2021. Google home mini have often been free.
Hey google, set a timer for xx minutes.
Replace the words from Talking Heads' Psycho Killer with Wi-fi Killer and you are on the money.
F HN
I own one and I really like it, I use it for the basics though so not sure how the other functions work and if they are good.
Same here. I got one 3 months ago and am happy with it so far. Looks good + heats up my food. Does what it's supposed to i guess. But I can confirm that my phone and tablets connected to wifi slow down when I'm about 3m away and it's heating something up.
Ah… I bought the similar model from Costco for $219.9 and thought its a good deal (MS4296OBC)
now they are selling below $200 :(
MS Paint diagram?
After I got an air fryer I stopped looking for a microwave
I believe they are in different purpose
You certainly can't heat a glass of milk using the air fryer :)
hehehehe +1 for the comeback
or can't blow eggs using the air fryer
Have you tried? You'd be surprised.
Surprised by the mess created as a result of blowing air into a glass of liquid? :)
Yeah sorry, i should have clarified. I would only be using mainly to reheat food and cooked frozen stuff. I guess it depends what others use them for.
i often reheat fried food (esp meat) in the air fryer but have never thought of using it to reheat a curry or stir fry. Feels like a microwave is a more convenient shape for that kind of job?
@isthisreallife22: For stir fry and curry I just use the stove
@Jared17: I just put it outside while it's sunny. :)
I have this model and very I’m happy with it. I paid about $179 as well approx. 6 months ago.
A lot of people have said this model in particular interferes badly with wifi, but I haven’t noticed anything like that.
OK, there's no number pad. How does that work? 30 secs, 1 minute, 3 mins, 5-10? etc
Thanks.
The manual is linked on the HN product page.
MORE / LESS
Choose the cooking menu.
Set cooking time and weight.
While cooking with auto and manual function, you can increase or decrease the cooking time at any point by pressing the - or + keys (except defrost mode).
Thanks. I just figured that 30 secs is great down low, but not looking forward to cooking rice at 20mins.
@cunningdrew: Ideally you press the menu buttons for rice and don't have to think about time.
@cunningdrew: You cook rice in a microwave????
@cunningdrew: The + button adds 10s increments down low, but the graduations become coarser as the numbers go up.
Can't remember the exact numbers but it's something like 10 sec increments up to 1-2 min, then 30 second increments to 5? minutes, then 1 minute increments, 5 minutes etc.
But I use a rice cooker :)
@zbys: you can press +30sec or scroll across the scroll bar with your finger in a swipe motion to really ramp the time up. I'd rather just have a number pad but oh well too late now.
edit: never mind, different model. sorry!
:( just bought this from Myer for $249… I'll hand in my Ozbargain card.
Yolo - you only lose once
I actually laughed out loud at that.
Unless your name is Yolo?
Return it. Then buy this.
Me: squints at the picture…hold on is that, is that my microwave?
Double checks
Omg yeah. I recommend this microwave it's honestly amazing. Trusty microwave I've baked a lot of potatoes in it. Just add margarine and thyme and mwah. Crispy home made potatoes. Set to 10 minutes for 130g of potatoes if you want it extra crispy.
Sweet potatoes will take longer.
It has a lot of cool functions honestly
Am I missing something here. Didn't think a microwave could crisp food or does this do things my standard microwave doesn't?
If I overcook my bacon in the microwave, it turns into a crisp.
Bacon in a microwave? Blasphemy!! But convenient sometimes.
It can crisp food depending on the food and how long you put it in etc
I have a 15 year old NEC microwave, would this be a drastic upgrade?
Looks yes functionally no
My one doesn't have an inverter. All the blogs seem to talk about even gentle heating. Not sure if it's hype hmmm
Regarding even heating see eug's comment
@Lukian: Thanks guess I'll be hanging with the NEC for another decade XD
The inverter is useful - depending on what you use the microwave for. If you only ever use it on max power (throw in some food, hit start a few times), the inverter will do nothing for you. Where I find it's helpful is defrosting raw foods, possibly uses it for some more of the inverter cook settings. In my experience with the 25L LG (reflected by choice.com.au review also), it defrosts better than anything I've ever used before. I have thrown in a 1kg block of frozen beef cheek and it comes out perfectly usable with no overcooked sections (and without even flipping). I also often freeze bacon and this is great for getting it ready to cook. It comes out pliable with a tiny bit of surface ice still left which you can scrape off so it's not too wet.
One of the annoyances I noticed is most inverter microwaves will go into "cool" mode for no logical reason, where it runs the fan for 30-60 seconds after it's finished. The LG doesn't do this from what I've seen which is great.
No.
The display in mine failed after 2.5 years.
I did get it fixed on LG's dime, though.
Is there an option to mute the beep sound on this one?
The LG microwaves do have a mute but it's not particularly well called out (I think it's not even in the manual). You have to hold 2 buttons together - on my smaller one I think it's clear and inverter cook together for a few seconds, then turn hit + to turn it to "Off". Of course some just cut the speaker wires :D
Note that this mutes all the sounds - button presses as well as completion tone. Once you get used to the fact that it won't beep on completion it's great - doesn't make a lot of noise or wake people up, and as an added benefit my 2 year old has completely lost interest in the microwave as there is no audible feedback when he messes with the buttons.
Thanks a lot mate for taking time to respond.
Is this microwave reliable?
The non stick coating on the inside of mine starting flaking off at some point, I noticed 3 months after the 2 year warranty was out, not sure if this is indicative of the model or not, but just an FYI.
LG didn't want a bar of me, which is fair enough it's out of warranty, but still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
Other than that I had really enjoyed this microwave, but as they still use the same coating (checked with LG) I will be buying a different brand next time.
I have this model. The only issue I have is that the rotating glass plate doesn't stay engaged with the drive mechanism well.
Can you see well inside the microwave while it's cooking?
The mesh screen is black. I tend to open the door to check for boiling.
Is there a light when the door is open as well? (Couldn't see one from the photos).
Yes, there's an LED light at the top centre, right in front of the door opening.
The white LED is bright, but I won't say the view is clear (black mesh in the way). You would be easily able to tell if the food is steaming or if the soup is boiling.
My LG Neochef broke recently, now with this cheap deal idk what to do.
Looking at the panasonic - nn-sf564wqpq but is $100 extra
How many years did it last?
My Sharp R350YW (1200W) died after not-quite 4 years, with the first one failing just inside the 1 year warranty (not blaming the microwave on that first failure though, but Sharp could perhaps protect the circuit board better against insects).
my memory is bad, but i think it lasted for around 3 years
A friends friend bought a new one and got the old one refunded with new receipt and said they didn't trust it. True story.
Microwaves and coffee machines are ideal homes for ants and cockroaches but infestations should be easily avoidable if you're not a grot.
In my experience repairing microwaves the infested units were always filthy in the cavity.
Didn't need to see the bugs behind the display… the smell of cockroach shit gave it away before the customer even set it on the bench.
OK, there's no number pad. How does that work? 30 secs, 1 minute, 3 mins, 5-10? etc
goes up in 10sec increments….honestly thought i'd be more annoyed losing +1 sec controls but meh…
We bought a nearly identical model. Press Start for +30s increments. (e.g. once = 30s, three times = 90s ).
This model is different than ours but I imagine the +/- will get you up to 10 minutes faster than pressing 20 times.
Plus / minus adds / subtracts 10 secs. Start button adds 30 secs. Once at or over 3 mins, the plus and minus add or subtract 30 secs (not 10).
When running, the plus and minus buttons add / subtract 10 secs no matter what the time remaining is.
You can also hold the plus button for rapid increments (not whilst running though)
Thanks for the comments guys. In that case, might pass. We cook veggies for 8mins and rice for about 16-18mins.
You can press the sensor cook menu buttons for veggies and rice though.
Wait for a deal on the knob version (4266), imo it is much easier to set time.
Make sure it’s not one of the LG microwaves that plays an irritating song when it’s done.
I think all of them do. I don't mind it though, adds character!
You can mute this :)
I almost took ours back it was so annoying until I googled it and found how to mute all sounds
As Nigella would say, it's the best 'meekrow warvey'!
