What Would You Do? Baby Peeing in The Middle of Bath

Here is the scenario

You were in the middle of bathing your 6 months old baby in the bath tub. All of the sudden, you noticed the baby were peeing in the bath tub. Would you
1. Take the baby out, wrap them to ensure they are warm while you are emptying the bath tub, quickly rinse the tub, refill the bath tub with warm fresh water and restart bathing the baby again
Or
2. Continue bathing them without replacing the water

I have included in the poll whether the respondent is male or female, just in case different gender has different response.

I can only assume your baby is a boy - the fountain effect ⛲.

Otherwise, you can't tell a no.1 is occurring when the baby is in the bath filled up with water to a baby safe level…

    #1 seems OK

    #2 ugh…

Googled, this was one search result - :D

How to Deal With Poop or Pee in the Bath
Keep the reaction even and easygoing. Yelling or obvious disgust can make a kid hesitant to use the tub again.
There’s no need to end a bath due to a little urine, it’s a relatively clean bodily fluid in terms of bacteria.
If a child poops in the tub, drain the water, remove the stool, and clean with soap and water. Rinse and start the bath over.
If the issue continues, look at the comfort of the toilet or the child’s schedule and make appropriate changes.

if a child poops in the tub, drain the water, remove the stool, and clean with soap and water.

Tried that, but I just end up with a soapy turd. How long do you clean it for?

Grossed out and laughing. Well done

      • please provide mspaint diagram to illustrate - thank you.

#2, I'd just run away and leave the country.

Did you google it before posting?

        • Anonymous; therefore no shame. I'm all for it, particularly given the quality/factual nature of many of the responses supplied here, and the fact that after a relatively short time the online discussions/dialogues containing relevant 'keywords' appear on Google searches.

  • +9

how big is the bath in the scenario? because that would definitly alter my decision.
baby bath size - empty and rebath
    swimming pool size - nah
adult human bath tub… - i'm on the fence. i'm unfamiliar with the bladder size of a baby - how much urine are we talking here?

  • +4

i would stop washing and not replace the water

    • +6

um, so what are you saving the water for?

  • +11

Urine is acidic, so add some baking soda to neutralise it…

    • In fact (to quote a crap song) that "ain't necessarily so" jv. The top-end of 'normal' pH for human urine is about 8.0; which is quite alkaline. Granted though, most urine is slightly acidic.

      • +13

Test, then add either baking soda or lemon juice accordingly

        • +5

          And olive with an umbrella.

      • +1

as evidenced by these forums, JV is constantly pissing on people so his urine doesn't have a chance to get up to 8

  • +1

As SF3 said - what about the time/s baby does it and you didn't notice?

In my opinion, depends on what sort of proportions we're talking about. Was there much water in the bath to begin with? Has the water noticeably changed colour? Is the water level appreciably higher? If yes to any of the former, then replace the water. If no, then leave it and carry on.

    • Has the water noticeably changed colour?

If there is a noticeable change in bath water colour your baby is probably quite dehydrated and needs to drink more.

Is the water level appreciably higher?

You would likely not notice change in water level while the baby is still in the bath. Baby full of urine would displace pretty much the same amount of water as empty baby plus urine so the water level would not really change.

  • +1

Look the other way and give the kid some privacy and also you won’t get a face full of pee.

  • +18

You are going to be going through a lot of water if you change the bath water every time your kid pees in it

  • +4

Bath in the toilet. Just flush the baby poops and pees - bye bye dirty water, hello fresh water all with a push of a button! Convenience!

    • +8

      Just flush the baby

      What !!!

    • Depends on the toilet plumbing. My toilets use rainwater tanks so wouldnt be fresh!

I feel like this was an argument between mum n dad, and dad is coming to the Ozbargain brains trust for support of his side…

    • +1

Yep, I just wish that once we could get both people to sign up to ozbargain so we could hear both sides of the story.

      • I think you're onto something. Sale of discounted popcorn (near used by date of course) will go through roof.

      • +1

You are about to enter the Courtroom of OzBargain. The people are real. The cases are real. The rulings are final.

      • +1

What would the other side of the story be?

I sort of feel that even if this is one person looking for validation, they have done it in a pretty non biased way. Facts followed by what would you do…

Would the other side of the story have to explain the hopes and dreams of the person who thinks that a baby peeing in a bath might or might not be worth draining a bathtub?

    • -1

….'and dad is coming to the Ozbargain brains trust for support of his side…

Mmmyeah-but-nah, cause the OP's name is 'jejepz'. That's clearly a name invented by a chick or a gay dude, neither of which fit your suggested scenario.

    • happens all the time..
      im with dad for sure…
      which is
      keep bathing..

  • +4

I agree with Marie-Antoinette; 'Let them piss in the bath'

  • +6

I’m fairly sure our bub has peed in the bath and we’ve continued, although my husband does most of the bathing so tbh I can’t remember. We’ve had the same scenario with poo, which is obviously a drain, clean up and re bath scenario.

    • +5

lol - who negged this? Someone who takes issue with a Dad bathing their kid? Or someone who doesn't believe in cleaning poop off a baby?

      • +2

It's definitely someone who believes that if babies shit in the bath they deserve to bathe in it so maybe they'll think twice before shitting in the bath again.

  • +15

What 6 month old baby is going to happily get in and out of a warm bath and sit patiently in a towel waiting for you to change the bath water?

    • +2

One of the kids that's going to get leashed.

      • Unsure about that assumption. I'd leave the baby in the wee water. But would also be happy to leash if needed. I was a leash kid. Plan to leash if required. :)

        • If needed? If required? I mean.. I'm of the opinion, if you're taking the damn job of being a parent seriously, those aren't 'real' issues.

          • @zwolf: Well I guess everyone has an opinion. I don't understand what yours is… But good on you for having one.

            • @SnakeCasablanca: That the idea of a leash being a requirement or necessity for your child is 'beyond silly', to be very polite, and to me an indication you're not taking that shit seriously. I'm very sure there's many parentals that don't leash that fit that critieria too, but… JFC. It's your child. Your legacy. Not your pet weasel.
Hypothetically, what are your standards or instances for leashing being "required" or "necessary"? Because I'm realllly struggling for one when "good parenting" isn't more than sufficient.

              • @zwolf: I am confused as to how using a leash on a child is both 'beyond silly' and also 'an indication that you're not taking that s**t seriously'.

Are you suggesting that if I decide to use a leash I am not going far enough? Leg irons?

Anyway. Cheers mate. Feel free to raise your child as you do and I will raise mine as I do.

                • @SnakeCasablanca: Yeah, leg irons are what I'm proposing instead of a leash.

No, you dolt, I'm saying there's no necessity for anything beyond a playpen at home for the age appropriate.
Be a god-damn parent and watch and educate your kid.
Good stuff. Hope they don't get any emotional baggage for life out of your laziness. Good stuff.

                  • @zwolf: When you get bored of giving unnecessary advice to people who dont want it on Ozbargain. Can I suggest perhaps getting a life? Im done now. Have a good day. :)

  • Fixed

Take the baby out, wrap them to ensure they are warm, restrain with octopus straps, while you are emptying the bath tub etc

  • +35

Throw the baby out with the bathwater, obviously.

    • +3

I was getting annoyed it took this long for this comment to come up.
The rest of you are uncultured swine!

  • It's likely just processed breast milk. Just keep washing.

    • its paleo

    • +1

I have some processed food for you…

  • Call 000

    • get the bat signal out!
      or
      bikies

  • +3

didn't know this is a problem

  • +6

OP peed in the pool, should I drain it?

  • how much water are we talking about…

a little tub that sitting in a bath tub.. or you actually filling up a bath tub..

  • +1

The water would be pretty diluted and wee is already mostly water anyway. You can't bubble wrap the kid 24/7. Otherwise the kid might get stupid allergies.

Would def change if number 2.

  • +4

I am male and I would also pee in the bath.

    • hopefully not while the baby is in it

  • +1

what bout 2ml's of piss in a 20ltr bath?

    Panic stations all.. CODE BROWN….

    • Probably more than 2ml, but still not really a problem.

  • If this happens often, consider a bit of elimination communication and hold your baby on a potty for a minute or two while the bath is filling (and have bath a little later so they're ready to go). If you can figure out the right schedule you can catch their number 1s and 2s before bath time and stop the problem. Also this won't necessarily make potty training easier when it comes time for that, could even make it harder. Just convenience for you as a parent.

  • +2

i'd pee in their as well to go with the flow …

  • I feel like this should be an AITA on Reddit :D

My (now 8 year old) son used to pee in the bath pretty regularly. It didn't seem to corellate with him having wet his nappy just before a bath. We would have pretty much never stopped cleaning and running a new bath if we stopped every time he did it. Eventually we just got into taking him into the shower instead.

  • Seriously? Whats the point of bathing someone in urine?

    • +4

that's a question for duckduckgo, private browser in firefox, VPN on, friends computer.

    • Have you see how dirty kids get? Urine is much cleaner than any kid haha

    • Have you used baby wash? At recommended amounts it's a stupid amount of soap for the volume of water. But babies occasionally poo in the bath. It needs enough soap to get the baby out after a poo without needing to wash the baby again.

      A baby wee is fine.

  • Other: I would not have a baby in the first place.

  • +3

If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown, get the f*** out of the bath.

  • +7

Try bathing a 7-month-old, 4-year-old and 6-year-old at the same time. I make sure the two older ones go to the toilet 1st, otherwise, it's a pissing contest.

    • Yeah, it's a rule as soon as kids are able to understand words: You pee in the toilet first (or relax and calmly wait there for 30 seconds, if they say they can't go), THEN you get into the bath!

  • -2

I think there is a problem with the poll, in splitting by the nominated sex of the responder.
That doesn't indicate if a particular sex has a different response; it could just indicate how many males vs. how many females are on OzB.

    • +4

You look at the percentage of males who responded "I am Male and I would change the water" and you look at the percentage of females who responded "I am Female and I would change the water" and compare.

    • I think there is a problem with the polls generally. I suspect it’s more cultural than gender

  • +1

Take the baby out, throw out the water, dispose of the bath, burn your house down. Re-buy all of the above. Cause obviously the amount of pee a baby does is going to be a catastrophe.

    • Buy a new baby.

      • It's obviously faulty, take it back and exchange it for one that doesn't leak.

  • +1

issue a $5000 fine to the baby for causing emotional distress and pollution. the fine is subjected to 20.24% late payment fee, compounded weekly, until the baby reaches 18th birthday, or starts working, whichever comes first.

  • +3

depends if it is your first kid or second+ kids lol

  • change the baby water for sure!

  • +1

Give quick rinse with warm water after the Bath.

  • a 6month old baby piss is pretty damn small.

is this a bath in a baby bath / bucket? or a full size bath

I have an 8month old, we bath in the adult bath filled up about ~150mm, so teenie tiny wee aint going to make much difference

  • +2

TIL - ozb is almost entirely dudes

  • +4

    "It's all pipes!"

    • +3

      I WAS THERE! I SAW A DRAIN!

    • +2

Different pipes go to different places

  • You mean I should change the water when I pee in the bathtub?

  • The first thing my kid does is piss in the bath.

  • Urine is sterile, there is no problem continuing to bathe. If the baby squezed out a floater, thats an entirely different scenario.
