True, I was halfway through ordering, when I remembered to check the power and backed out. 1mW is the max legal to import. Also these take 3xLR44 cells and reviewers said that if you bump it on you would drain the battery.

Because I got the email separately and started and aborted ordering before I saw this thread.
I ordered a 1mW (according to the listing) laser pointer from eBay and it got siezed by Customs (Nov 2011).
I reckon that they basically just grab every one that they inspect. You gotta be lucky - obviously if they don't open them, they'll get through.
This is because cheap china laser pointers don't have an actual rating.
If you buy a 5MW you might get a 10mw or a 2mw.
Customs will confiscate it because of lack of proper labeling that prove its 1MW, and likely the fact that if they tested it it would probably be more then 1MW.
I'm not that sure, but I hear that buying from proper online shops that sell high quality proper labeled laser pointers is the way to go.
The other question is if everyone gets a warning or not, I personally wouldn't risk it.

It doesn't matter who you order a laser through - there is a certain percentage of chance that Customs will X-ray and then open it, and if that happens then you lose it.
The easiest way to import is to order the laser module and the enclosure (host) separately. That way it's a legal import, thus "no problemo"
