  • Is this type approved in Australia?

    • +2

They're described as FRS (Family Radio System). So no, they are not legal in Australia.

      • I know, I was kind of waiting to hear what excuse the poster came up with.

  • What sort or range could you expect with these on the open road?

  • +1

Just buy a UHF CB! Why risk massive fines and jail? https://www.acma.gov.au/devices-we-prohibit

    • That's a bit different. That link is for specifically prohibited device types. Two-way radios can and do get approval. Not these ones though.

Quickest page I could find with the range of fines. These are not legal in Australia (even for Hams like me).

        • It's a shame the ACMA dropped the ability to search for approved devices from their site, that was really useful. Of course, I only found it originally after buying a pair of cheap Baofeng radios then thinking to check. Ditched them before I turned them on.

          • @banana365: I take it back, I had a look and they can be reprogrammed to 70cm, so legal for me. So these are OK for all the Hams on Oz Bargain who want a crappy radio with no range.

@mostlygordon: Very dodgy that "out of the box" they're not legal though. It doesn't mention that they can even be reprogrammed in the blurb. Many of the cheap ones can these days, but consumers are really unlikely to know of the ability, the requirement or that it only counts if you've got the relevant qualification.

  • At least you can drink the potable belt clip in an emergency!

  • Says 400-470Mhz. 100% illegal to use.

  • Probably obvious now, but definitely not "Suitable for hotels, restaurants, construction sites, factories, etc." in Australia.

  • you can get this https://www.amazon.com.au/Ansoko-Handheld-Walkie-Talkies-16-… and reprogrammed to be legal?

    • Also not legal. Transceivers must be type approved for use in Australia. This means either UHF CB, or commercial radios that you need a license for. Otherwise a radio would need to be programmed in an Amateur Radio band and you would need an Amateur Radio license. Good way to go BTW, fun hobby see wia.org.au for more information.

  • how would you reprogram it?
