Seemingly a lot more stock of these recently, its good to see after half a year or so of shortages (GPU's included).

    • From what I've read:

5600X and 5800X will be in stock regularly with all big retailers by mid-March.

5900X will have all pre-orders met by mid-April, so after that it should be in stock too, at least for the big retailers.

      • That's good to hear, was starting to think that stock levels might not go back to normal before the release of zen 4 lol.

        • +1

I'm thinking of waiting for zen3+ 6900x to upgrade from my 2700x.

      • How does the 5600X compare with the 3600?

        • +2

It depends what you're using it for because everyone has different use cases. Check Hardware Unboxed review of how CPU's are scaling depending on the GPU that you use and determine yourself.

        • +3

How does the 5600X compare with the 3600?

Short answer: slightly faster (but not enough for most people to bother upgrading).

Games average about 10% more FPS at 1080p, less than 5% more at higher resolutions (across 16 games tested here https://www.techspot.com/review/2185-amd-zen-3-ryzen-5600-ve… )

        • +2

For games at 1080p it's about 10% faster. For games at 1440 or at 4K at times no difference. Which means it's GPU dependant. When there is a difference at those resolutions it's bigger with RTX 3080 or better cards.

On the other hand it costs more than an extra 50%.

Have a look at reviews for more information.

  • Is this going to be a good price when in stock elsewhere? I thought $499 was rrp but i can't keep track..

    • RRP is $469 so i would say it is a good price

  • I think it's a recent good price. It used to be lucky to buy a cpu/gpu at rrp.

Still rocking my aging 1600 af and i can wait.

  • Thanks OP - just got one.

PayPal payment option forced me to pay in USD so just went with credit card to avoid any exchange fees/issues.

    • You can tell paypal to use your bank for conversion for better rates, you should still use PayPal

      • I didn’t use PayPal :(

  • Not bad considering it is about the same total processing power as a 3700x with 2 more cores.. yet more power efficient and with higher single core speed.

    • -2

It has 2 cores less, that's significant

      • +1

But each core is 20% faster processing instructions. So the 5600x is 20% faster than the 3600. Whereas the 3700x had 2 more cores so potentially 25% faster than the 3600. Which makes the total processing power of the 5600x comparable to the 3700x but lower power and faster single core speed.

        • -2

it doesn't work just like that, more cores is still more cores

          • +2

@ln28909: Actually it works exactly how I described. In fact more cores are worse because of the impact to running code having to coordinate thread locking and the CPU synchronising access to cache.

You want more cores for total processing power, but if you can get the same power in fewer cores then you pick fewer cores every time.

  • +5

At this point I’ve written off the 5xxx series and will upgrade to 6xxxx due to the probable new socket.

    • So when are they due out?

      • Probably end of the year. Hopefully manufacturing issues will improve.

        • +2

Cool, I'll keep an eye out. I don't really 'need' to upgrade, my i5 4690 seems to do everything I need it to so I can wait for the best price/performance combo to arrive.

          • @EightImmortals: I was going to wait too. Partly for the new AMD socket but mainly ddr5.

I couldn't be bothered to wait anymore and made the leap from a 3770 non K to 5600x. Improvement gains aren't going to be too massive and you'd be paying the early adopter fees. Main problem in the build was the "old" 570 4gb.

      • I thought it was H2 2022… anyone link me to info regarding this year?

        • It is likely in 2022 rather than end of the year, no solid information except it is likely to be DDR5, new socket (Probably AM5), 5mn process alike Apple processors, USB 4 and maybe PCI-e 5 (may be board version dependent).

          • @frugal investigator: Yeah I thought there was that reddit post from the AMD employee that covered all this. :)

Definitely DDR5, New Socket, 5nm, but unsure about USB4 and PCIe5. I'll have to re-read.

    • +1

      new socket

      laughs in intel

      • If there's a new socket, does that mean most MOBOs will be incompatible? I have the x570.

        • +2

New socket would be the AM5. So every old MOBO won't be compatible.

          • +1

@OnlineShopper123: Thank you. That's going to be an at least $1000 dollar upgrade then.

I have Ryzen 3600 with a 2070 Super which is running fine at the moment.

I was hoping to upgrade at the end of the year but might only upgrade the GPU first.

            • +1

@dabs: If you're chasing high refresh rates at 1080p, like 120 FPS or more, you might be able to justify upgrading your CPU within the first few years after purchase.

Otherwise there's no actual benefit. Especially not for 1440p or 4k. It's not like the old days where every new CPU generation was noticeably faster. The 3600 will keep most people happy for years, at the current rate of CPU innovation (which is trending at lower performance growth over time).

            • @dabs: Doesn't mean you can't step up the 3600 with a 5800X or something down the line. It'd still be a significant improvement and you could likely use your current mobo. :)

              • @wellzi: @wellzi This is an option as well. My dad is using an 8 year old computer right now so I might buy the 5800X and make a new build with the 3600 for my dad.

    • First they will release a zen3+ on the same am4 socket. Am5 socket with DDR5 will be next year and am5 and DDR5 is going to be really expensive.

  • One down one more to go. Now for the RX 6800 XT to be widely available at RRP. My next build can wait.

  • -1

Problem is newegg charges in US Dollar. Most banks charge a fee for currency conversion.
Plus their rate is not very accurate.
These will make it around $465 AUD I think.

    • use Revolut

    • That's a different problem. Solutions include 28 Degrees, BankWest credit cards, or a currency service like TransferWise.

    • +1

Nah price for me using a visa debit card was the exact same as they said it'd be. Paypal adds a fee though so I didn't use it.

      • You will get charged a international currency conversion fee from your bank in a few days unless you use 28 degrees etc.

  • Feels bad for those who paid $539 + delivery a few days ago

    • +6

That's what they deserve for paying over RRP. Soon pretty much all retailers will have these at RRP or lower.

      • +1

Agreed. If you're willing to pay more even over MSRP, then you must realise that it means this kind of rip-off is actually encouraged.

      • +1

You must still be waiting for an $1100 3080

    • +4

specially when you can have Intel 10 chip i7 for $400 at the same time
      really stupid
though I don't think GPUs will get back to RRP anytime soon unfortunately

  • out of stock when I tried to order.

  • +2

I'm all for AMD but is it just me or are their prices and availability at the moment just insane??

Isn't the 10700K or even the 10600K a much better buy at this price just due to being readily available? I got the i7 those last week for cheaper than this, $421 through eBay with the afterpay 12% and it has 2 more cores, was considering the i5 as it was over $100 cheaper at $315 meaning it's $130 cheaper than the Ryzen.

I could be missing something but i thought IPC was about even at the moment if ever so slightly favouring Ryzen but only just.

    • That's what I did. I couldn't wait for AMD prices to go down and got a 10600KF for half this price last week.

    • Agree, after doing research and comparison, donno why you'll buy this mbo when you can get the i7 10th gen at cheaper price and it beats it from specs pov I don't get the Ryzen hype pls someone enlighten me?

    • if you are mostly gaming you can actually get 9th gen i7 9700k for even less and not notice any less FPS
they can be ocd to 5hz ez or 5.1 if you are lucky and will be on par

    • Lot's of people have AM4 motherboards already which makes Ryzen a drop in upgrade, which is still more cost effective even if the CPU is overpriced at the moment.

If you have to buy a new motherboard then it's a different story.

    • I can't stand intel and would rather pay a little more to support AMD. Read up on all their nasty behaviours.

  • +2

back in stock for anyone still looking

  • Newegg claim the 5900X is available, in stock, and ships from Australia if you're willing to pay above recommended retail price at $935.

    • … and they're out of stock now.

  • My brain said get one of these my heart bought a 5800x

  • Back in stock

The 5800X is also there for $650 again

    • That was a quick - no stock again. :(

      • +1
