    Full service

    What does this mean?

    • +4

There are low cost carriers where you just pay for carry on (7kg) and no amenities like food.

Full service airlines include checked luggage (20-32kg usually depending on the airline), generally food and drink, and in Qantas's case, where available, movies and wifi as well.

  • How long is the flying time?

    • ~2.25h when direct, but when you click on the flight date of your choice, it'll tell you.

Shame accommodation is starting from around $400 a night

  • +2

Flight prices aren't too bad for the odd days there - Only Hamilton Island accommodation will likely be $300+ per night never mind the cost of food/entertainment, etc…. The reason I so rarely travel inside of Australia! Land of fake smiles ;)

The reason I so rarely travel inside of Australia! Land of fake smiles ;)

I've often found when you pay $2 for a meal in asia the smiles are even more fake knowing you can afford $20 a meal back home.

I disagree - Street food vendors are always happy for trade and are genuinely happy for people to enjoy their food - simple pride in their own business which isn't reflected here unfortunately! Many foreigners in the tourist areas tip them which also helps with smiles ;) !! For the most fake smiles in Aus just look at any news channel (or other presenters for that matter - holding a smile while reading a teleprompter regardless of the subject matter must be one of the job requirements!

        • Assuming you're talking a SE-Asian destination, where under the surface they blame foreigners for a number of socio-economic problems (ie. prostitution), when it is ingrained in their culture and existed before mass air travel by foreigners.

There are real smiles and fake smiles no matter where you travel.

          • @buffalo bill: I've spent time across many places in Asia from northern and south west China to Japan/Korea and Thailand/Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam…. Oddly the least wealthy places often seem to have the happiest people, especially in showing their pride for their culture, food, etc.! Many provinces of Isaan in Thailand for example has a lot of more traditional Thai/Laos people - many fairly well educated and are shy/reserved - a far cry from the tourist parts of the country. There are of course some that due to dire financial circumstances and responsibilities in looking after children and parents end up in the said industries in Tourist Thailand - it's a sad fact. I have been lucky to travel to/stay in local areas with Thai friends from Australia - I've never heard anyone directly blame foreigners for these issues but anyone can see that without the tourism over the past year that particular industry has been decimated with many people moving back to be with family.

Agree. I looked up the ferry to the mainland, $66 for a 35min trip jeeeeeez. Accommodation is much cheaper on the mainland but at ferry prices like those, well you can rule out commuting as an option.

So if you fly to Hamilton island, expect to stay there! (I've never been to the Whitsundays before so know very little).

Full service flights are such a con. I had always flown budget airlines but one of my flights was cancelled and jetstar transferred me to a Qantas flight where I had fullservice which basically just meant I got a blankie for the flight, gee thanks. On top of the useless extras, it was the most cramped seat I have ever had and I have flown with ~5 different budget airlines on the same trip previously. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for it.

I cannot justify spending double the price for a flight just for a blankie, meal and checked baggage with a more cramped seat.

  • +1

It's worth going full service cause when they close the borders mid -flight you get a meal there and back and only have to pay one way.

    • and wifi/movies the whole time! ;)
