  • GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-P - what does the Max P mean? (noob here)

    • +1

Max P means what you think it means 😏

Max P = max performance. What's the difference between GeForce Max-Q and Max-P laptops?

      • +1

I thought they got rid of the max P on the 30 series.

        • "In addition, to be more transparent about a laptop’s exact capabilities, RTX 30 Series laptops now show more information than ever, listing exact TGP, clocks and features supported. You will find this in the control panel which now reports maximum power (TGP+Boost), and support for key features including Dynamic Boost 2, WhisperMode 2, Advanced Optimus, and others, all of which fall under the Max-Q umbrella."

"We strongly encourage OEMs to list clocks and other technologies a laptop supports, including Advanced Optimus, Dynamic Boost 2, and more. Ultimately, like all laptop features and specs, it is up to the OEM to market what their particular laptop configuration supports."

It's important to note that Max-P, the often used name for full-power mobile GPUs, isn't one Nvidia coined or uses in any official capacity. So on whether Nvidia has 'killed off' Max-P, it would have to create it first.

Nvidia wants you to know 'Max-Q branding is not going away.'

        • +1

Max-P was never officially a thing. Max q yes, but max p was just manufacturers trying to differentiate themselves from Max q laptops.

Companies are absolutely abusing it now by sticking max-p or P on everything. A 95W 2070 would've been MaxQ last gen but since that's not a thing they're just sticking Ps in the name to make you think it's faster

          Gigabyte is doing this too

      • +1

Thank you! Thought so, it's been confusing with the new gen laptops to see whether it will be limited in performance due to the low wattage on the GPUs.

      • +1

wow what a (profanity) of marketing and consumer (mis)information this is. Nvidia introduces some silly standard, manufacturers adapt to the market which wants unlocked performance, creates a new term, new term is unregulated so any laptop can claim it regardless of internals so long as they aren't Max-Q.

Why do you need this much power for 1080p gaming?

      Connect to an external display?

To maintain a high frame rate…?

R7-5800H and 3070 is an amazing combo, I wonder if they will be able to run close to full potential in this machine. Past ASUS TUF laptops have had a lot of trouble with thermal throttling.

    NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070,With Dynamic Boost up to 1510MHz at 90W (95W with Dynamic Boost),8GB GDDR6

    Spec taken from ASUS website:
    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/For-Gaming/TUF-Gaming/2021-ASUS…

This is not the fastest the RTX 3070 mobile can go — the MSI GE66 Raider for example has 1620 MHz boost clock and base TGP of 115W according to VideoCardz

    • Apparently the MSI GP66 Leopard 10UG has 130W with 5W boost, at a decent RRP $2799 entry price.

  • +4

The GPU in this laptop is a low power variant of the RTX 3070 (95 watt). So the mention of Max-P on the ebay listing is misleading, as this is not the "performance" version.

  • Quick question, Can I connect this to dual 4k monitors? One through the hdmi 2.0b and one through the USB c?

  • Btw, this display has only 45% NSTC coverage.
