[Afterpay] Seagate BarraCuda 8TB 3.5" HDD $228.80 (eBay Plus) $232.92 (Non Plus) Shipped @ Harris Technology eBay

120
PAPY10PLUSAY12

The cheapest 8TB HDD I could manage to find on eBay that isn't refurbished or OEM.

Normally $239 from other computer stores.

You can also buy it for even cheaper from Amazon USA for $226.44 (Amazon Prime required for free deliveries)

and if you know how to "Shuck" a drive (ripping a HDD out of it's external enclosure) you could save even more by purchase an 8TB Desktop drive for $208.11 from Amazon UK (Prime required for free delivery). These are likely BarraCuda SMR drives.

Just beware the lack of warranty if you do so and hope that the courier doesn't drop your parcel.

  • As per this Seagate CMR & SMR list, these are SMR drives

    • Yes. So make sure your particular use scenario is suitable for these drives.

Seagate used to label them as "archive" drives, for which they are perfect.

  • Is this a good deal?

    • +1

It's an okay deal for local stock and given the recent lack of deals for internal drives.

The best deals are usually Amazon / Newegg though buying from them means getting your items shipped from overseas.

Example $204 @ Amazon US via AU for Black Friday

Though things like tariffs have generally made the prices of computer parts gone up in the recent months.

  • Went for the bare drive on amazon with Prime and 3% discount gift cards. Thanks for the post.

  • I bought one of these in July last year, recently RMA'ed it. RMA process was excellent, but the fact that I had to RMA it, not so excellent. Lost 3TB, but nothing that can't be replaced.

    • I've got 8 of them in my NAS - had to replace 2 in the last year so I want a spare on hand.

They've been running 24/7 for 3 years so I'm okay that some are coming to end of life.

      • I thought SMR hard drives were not good in a NAS. Why have you got them in a NAS since these are SMR. Poor write performance in a NAS apparently. That's why lots of people got up WD for switching some of the WD Red hard drive models to SMR without their knowledge.

        • Well clearly they've not been performing poorly for me. I understood the Barracuda were not SMR (at least when I bought these 3 years ago).

    • RMA process was excellent

Is that with Seagate or with the retailer?

      • Bought off Amazon. RMA is done through their website, and sent to Seagate. Took 1 week to get a new hdd to me.

As above, gadgetguy is getting awesome tenure out of the drives, and then sometimes they fail. Currently I have put mine in a HDD case, so its not getting the 24/7 treatment. Write speeds are pretty bad, about 40mb/s for me, but that could also be the case.

Still, I paid a really good price for 8TB, and I'll get proper use out of it (hopefully this time).

  • i bought one of these. They are noisy. Any time a HDD's clicking is that loud, I get concerned that it might be failing. I've always had at least one mechanical HDD in every system, and I haven't heard a drive this noisy since a 7200rpm drive in 1999 (it was the first ever 7200rpm drive).

    • Sounds like you have a faulty drive. I've got a few of these and they don't do loud clicking sounds.

      • what case do you have? Maybe it's just sound insulated.

        • Yeah sorry i forgot i've got two of the Barracuda Compute 4TB model which i was mistakenly thinking was the 8TB. It's not the 8TB model. My mistake. It doesn't make loud sounds though.

But then again i do have the Barracuda Pro 10TB 7200rpm model in a Dell Precision PC which doesn't make loud clicking sounds. It's supposed to be even louder than the 8TB model. So i can't see why your 8TB 5400rpm model would.

I wonder if your drive has bad sectors which it's trying to relocate but it's failing to do so causing loud clicking sounds.

    • See my other post, I have 8 of these in a NAS and they are pretty much silent. Certainly no "clicking".

      • you don't hear it at all, even if you put your ear up to it while it's reading/writing?

        • I can hear the drives, just, with my ear right next to the NAS. Can't hear anything where I'm sitting a few feet away.

      • That's why i think lostn might have a faulty drive with heaps of bad sectors. There should be no clicking sounds. That's a sign of drive damage.
