    Says $297?

    • Sorry yeah $297

  • their website is confusing.

What's the difference between this and this http://www.harveynorman.com.au/yamaha-channel-htib.html

    • Right next to the title it mentions the model in light grey - that's the YHT296B

  • Is this better or logitech z906??

    • No idea if these are good or not, but the older YHT195's were decent and many people preferred them over the Z5500's. I think the 196's were recently released so there's not many reviews/threads on them.

      • The z5500's were also much better sounding speakers than the newer z906's.

    • My money would be on the Yamaha's.
However, it would be best to listen to both.

wow… receiver and speakers so cheap now.
    is this model any good?

  • cheap but is it good?

  • Good price. Is it good?

  • id rather pay 200 more and get the 296 version.

Has more hdmi inputs and includes component for the wii.

For under $300 there much else to compare it too. Everything around that price doesnt compare. I got an old clunker Yamaha surround sound system, and it's never skipped a beat. For the money I challenge anyone to kind better… big plus vote. Nice to have a decent brand staring back at you from the lounge ;).

Tempting, looks like decent value for the money. Got a Samsung BD5500 that I'm using after my old amp pooped itself. Think it may be time to replace it. :)

  • should I buy YHT196B - $297 or Pioneer HTP521 - $391 (link below)? Please help out a ht novice!

  • Yamahah, good price and good brand, plussssss!!

    http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheater-sy…

From the specs. Look like it does not do lossless DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. Alo No AM band only FM for radio.

For the extra $94 the Pioneer posted above is a much better deal than this low entry level Yamaha.

    • But you can get your blu-ray player, HTPC or PS3 to do the audio decoding then just send it over to the yamaha

  • if you have speakers and subwoofer, ie. upgrading old receiver. you could pick up the HTR-3064 from JB Hi-Fi for $249.

  • Just so everyone knows, Yamaha is a terrible brand at its low-to-mid range. Yamaha produce really good high end receivers though. Stick to Sherwood, Onkyo or Pioneer at this price range.

    • Yeah I was told the same. I went with a Pioneer.

  • Does this system sound any good?

I'm not expecting earth shaking bass, but it should at least avoid the shrill, hollow high pitched sound that very cheap subwoofer/speaker combos produce.

    • +1

There are many things that make a system decent, having a decent receiver, speakers, acoustic walls, cabling, cable connectors, audio card and equaliser settings are superior to a system thats double the price with no adjustments.

      • By far the most important factor is the quality of the speakers. If they're small paper cone speakers in cheap plastic enclosures then no amount of tweaking the other factors will save the user from terrible quality sound.

Things like the cabling, cable connectors and audio cards have a very minor impact on the sound quality. Source to receiver is HDMI, speaker cables are just plain copper cables. Audio source is HQ digital too so it's not going to be a source of hum or hiss.

I don't expect great quality audio from a $300 system, but at times I've heard cheap speakers and honestly thought 'what an incredible waste of money'.

        • If you have $2000 speakers and a $200 amp, then your system would be crap. I've checked on several audiophile forums and they say that the amp is the most important, if you transmit crap quality sound to quality speakers, you're going to get a crappy quality sound regardless. Overall, what is most important is to have matching quality speakers and amps or speakers that match the amp's standard. By doing this, you won't waste cash on having quality speakers that can't reach their full potential because of the poor amp. Plus, quality wires do matter tremendously, your speakers are going to be rubbish if you keep getting static because of the cable's crappy shielding and length or the cable's poor placement.

And also try getting cables with a very high AWG and see how your speakers will respond to that.

  • Today I wass in JB HIFI and overheard a sales person trying to sell a Yamaha home theatre to somone. The sperson asked if the systems supported 3D. Just as I was looing at the spec. The sales person had no idea. I ended up having to point out to the sales person the specs and 3D clearly written on the side of box for both systems. So obviously they have no idea what they are selling.

They are called salesmen not technicians, there's a reason for that.

      • +1

True, but you did know that the golden rule of sales is know your product!!!

        • +1

Theoretically yes, but if your customer is ignorant it generally won't matter. Customers at JB tend to be no way near tech aware as we are.

        • +2

Agreed, there has to be mutual understanding. It's like the whole 50/100/200Hz TV thing, everyone has been programmed to believe that they need it, without really knowing what it means…and let me tell you there's a lot of OzB'ers that rabbit on about 100/200Hz MC without a single clue!

However, that is actually a point that applies to the staff as well, my local JB guys are pretty good, they have at least a fundamental understanding of most tech matters…I can't say the same for some of the bimbos at the other stores…OMFG some of those poor kids are thick! The key word here is preparation, well and professionalism…you can't just turn up to a tech sales job like you're gonna be flipping burgers for the day! :p

        • I couldn't agree more with you. But you have it admit that its at least fun to argue with salesmen about the little point there is in spending $300 for a Monster HDMI cable.

        • +4

Lol, yep…the joy of watching them try to justify their million-dollar HDMI cables sure is priceless.

The other stimulating conversation involves their ridiculously expensive surge protectors - next time they pull this one just ask "does this use a metal oxide varistor or gas discharge arrester?" - that one universally gets the response "derp? herp de derp derp derpity derp!"

  • For those questioning whether this will be a good investment or not, you get what you pay for and unfortunately, when it comes to home theatre, the price scale is a bit higher.

Honestly, I don't think you'd be doing much wrong at $297. If you're someone who has set a budget of (lets say) around $1000 for home theatre speakers, then this would be a waste of money. If you're someone who's new to HT or tired of TV speakers, then definitely consider this kit.

Yes, Yamaha's lower end products aren't great but I doubt you'd find much in this price range that is great anyway.

Keep in mind, higher volumes with these smaller speakers may be an issue. So, think twice before you crank up the volume to watch the opening scene of Ironman (so awesome!).

  • I bought this system today. Setup and configure was a breeze. The only issue I had was my xbox switched to 1080i instead of 1080P. A quick menu setting in the xbox fixed that… The sound so far is awesome. as for plugging in the Wii.. My TV takes component video and can also pass this back through to the amp.

  • Would love to get one of this but the height is too high to fit in the slot in my TV cabinet. Sigh.

How's everyone placing the rear speakers? On a small side table at both sides of the sofa?

  • Both rear ones are on the sofa at the moment.

  • I went ahead and bought this package today. While I was there another customer snapped one up too.

Sound is very good. The front speakers are a little weak, but there's nothing a little tweaking of the bass won't fix. Subwoofer is more than powerful enough for my needs.

This is an excellent package for the price. Normal HN retail is $599.

  • I went with the pioneer and spend the extra $$, just waiting on delivery now from videopro. Has anyone experienced delivery times to Perth?

  • Got one myself yesterday and have been mighty happy with it's performance. I'm no expert and just thought I should upgrade from TV speakers so there was really nothing to compare with. I almost for the Logitech Z906 and am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I didn't :o)
