  • Great spec for me, including screen brightness.
But only 8GB soldered RAM - GRRRR!

    17.5 hour battery life??
Has anyone bought this and can chime in on the actual battery life?

  • my kids going year 7 this year .is this good, please advise me?
    thanks

    • Probably overpowered, if there is such a thing.
But they should grow into it.

Low voltage Ryzen 5 with integrated graphics and 8GB of RAM that is soldered, (not upgradable) is definitely not overpowered.

It's fine for school. It's pretty lightweight and it's one of the few budget models that offer an all-day battery life and also has a 300 nits display.

The more pedestrian Lenovo E-series tend to have duller 250 nit displays and the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series have even worse 220 nit panels.

        • Yeah good point on the RAM, but given it is a fast NVMe drive, virtual memory can be used to boost RAM.

Edit: Oh, I see bono has pointed this detail out below.

Slightly cheaper, screen perhaps not as good but has 16GB RAM.

    • The Flex 5 can be used in Tablet mode and has touchscreen. Main downside — it weighs more at 1.66kg

Yoga Slim, despite having the Yoga brand name doesn't have a 360° hinge (only 180°) and lacks touchscreen.

It's also a different class of machine, the yoga 7 screen, speakers, touchpad are really good and overall build quality is very good, the Flex 5 isn't of the same quality.

  • 8GB soldered is fine, as long as there's an extra free slot. Is there?

    • +1

I don't think so, I think it's just the one RAM slot which is soldered .. however there's a spare nvme ssd slot.

Also the SSD in this is 3Gbs read/write, so even if you have to swap things to virtual memory instead of physical memory, it still chugs along nicely. Just go to computer properties, advanced, virtual memory, and set it to have 20G or so minimum virtual memory! I'm already doing this with an older laptop with an intel processor that's half the speed and only 8G of RAM, but 3Gbs SSD (970 evo plus 2TB) and I have found it pretty good for running VMs for software development which typically requires more than 8G of RAM. It's not super fast, but it's fast enough to be quite usable.

If you want more physical RAM you would have to de-solder and solder in a 16G chip 😅

  • Thanks, bought 1!

Having a few trouble with a Lenovo laptop. Each time calling up the warranty dept and the person at Lenovo had always tried to "get out of jail" / deny by claiming any issues as "accidental".

Generally Lenovo comes at a higher price and tge feedback at this forum have been overwhelming great, but my personal experience with Lenovo has been underwhelming.

I guess it is a good machine when it is working ok. But when there is an issue, it is a headache. Is that what we expect from a "reputable" company. I guess absolutely not.

    Buyer beware.

    • Agree there, Lenovo support is horrible. Had issue with T480, el3 separate technical came and replaced all parts related to it and it’s still broken. They closed the case and said issue fixed.

  • is there a criterion to join Lenovo education store?

  • Thanks OP just ordered one.

  • Had cash rewards track the purchase. Fingers crossed it actually goes through
