My Toshiba SD-2109 cost $700 and only plays DVDs, so this looks like a bargain to me! :D

Paid ~$1200 for a CD player back in the day…

      • Wow, that's amazing. How fast technology has come…

Toshiba are good. My first DVD player was a Toshiba SD-3006 bought in late 1997 for $600 USD which at the time was equal to about $900 AUD. It only played NTSC R1 DVDs, but that wasn't a problem at the time as the range of region 4 discs was rubbish. I sold it 3 years later in late 2000, when I finally got around to buying a region 4 player.

  • Anyone know if it smoothly plays Mkv from a usb drive

    • +1

Ok to answer my own question :) After reading the 9 page AVS thread most MKVs play fine. However those with compressed headers may or may not play but can be run through mkmerge to correct :) most folks seem very happy with this player.

  • will this play divx, xvid as well

Drop by HN tomorrow as they open till 9pm for next 3 days…

  • If you really want it you can buy it now on the site and select to collect instore that way you don't have to worry about stock outs however it also means you will be paying the $88 price with no opportunity to get the salesguy to drop a few more bucks :D

    • "to get the salesguy to drop a few more bucks :D", when did that last happen in HN?

      • isn't melmac77 talking about JB?

  • Does this come with HDMI cable? and can it be set to output 720p if I don't have a 1080p full HD TV?

    • No hdmi cable supplied. It has all the hdtv resolutions including 720p

      • +1

I bought one from myer a few month back - it definitely DOES come with a HDMI cable in the box - unless Toshiba have cheaped out with the new stock (although I thought these were deleted players).

Also to an earlier question re: MKV - I've only had one MKV that wouldn't play - it locked up the player, mkmerge didn't fix it (or I don't know how to use MKMerge lol), but aside from that I've played probably 50+ other files that were all fine, and every divx file I've thrown at it has worked fine so far.

        • Confirmed. It does come with HDMI cable. I just went to Harvey Normnan and checked the open display box. There displayed price was $129. But confirmed from salesman the price is definately $88 same as the Samung they also had on sale. But unfortunately they wouldn't go any lower on the price.

        • wow thats strange, I opened my box yesterday just to confirm and there was definitely no hdmi cable in my box. So most probably there is different batches of stock from Toshiba? how sucky is that!

      • Yup, mine also came with a HDMI cable when I picked it up this arvo. I'd probably suggest returning it if you didn't get one.

  • Should I save my money and wait for a good post-Christmas deal on a PS3, or snap this up now?

    • Can you do region switching on PS3?

It's only $88, and toshiba quality. PS3 are still near $300.

      • +3

You can't, and PS3s are infected with cinavia

        • sucks.. :/ I really want to get a PS3, but don't want to double up.. looks like i'll get a Blu-ray player now and a PS3 later..

  • Just ordered one online with in-store pickup.

I'd bought the complete Star Wars box-set from Amazon in Blu Ray and was looking around for a cheapie player - this deal showed up right on time. Not saying Toshiba is 'cheapie', I once paid over 4K for a Toshiba desktop replacement notebook.

If you just want to play blurays all these base model players are probably very very similar. The $98 Panasonic lacks Coaxial out for sound, its purely for hdmi and good old composite rca. If you're playing media files, best check out the avforums on which suites your type of media.

  • Picked up 2 today opened one of them the supplied HDMI cable is longer than the power cable!

    • Does yours come with a multi region firmware update CD?

      • Yep it was in the box and a piece of cake to upgrade

  • In the manual it states that unpowered USB brives are not supported. eg Hard drives that get there power from the usb port. Is this the case? Has anyone actually tried an unpowered usb drive and confirmed if it works?

Any idea how much you can get it for in Madagascar?

      • +1

If you have a time machine, they are much cheaper in the future.

    • +1

granted a player of this level would cost much more in OZ but shipping is NOT free but probably around $40. Also unit is 120VAC only. So factor in a voltage converter an extra $100.

      FAIL

Managed to buy two of these from HN Chatswood for $85 each (asked for a discount in true Oz Bargain style)

  • I bought one today, for $88. Went to HN in Oxley (brisbane) and they had none left. The clerk told me that they had a dozen on order, but order was from before christmas so he didn't know if they were still coming in, let alone at that price.
I went to HN Indooroopilly, and they had 1 left sitting with no price sign. I asked the clerk what the price was, and he said $120. I asked if they can still do it for $88, and he said "yea, but i'm really not s'pose to 'cause it's in the latest catalogue as $120".
Went to the video store and got Hangover 2, and Avatar on Blu-Ray. :) yay
