  • Have a few q's about this TV. Anyone mind? …

Want to buy a TV for my mum and 6 year old brother for Xmas, they are after a 32-inch, and this is a great price (right?). They won't be watching blu-rays or anything, mainly dvd's on the PS2 (yes, they are a little technologically behind haha) or dvd player if it's still working, and playing PS2/Wii. I'm guessing this TV would be 50Hz? Would that be okay for what I've mentioned?

Do smaller TVs come higher than 50Hz? Has anyone here got this TV? Would you recommend it? :)

Sorry, got no clue about TV's. Thanks for any advice!

I work at Dick Smith and am a fan of this model. This is definitely the cheapest price this TV has ever been at and despite its specs on paper not looking the best I've found the picture quality to be really quite good.

The Downsides: not full HD (won't matter for a 32", and I'd only be worried if you were going to connect a PC to it via HDMI), power consumption is a bit steep also.

50Hz people have differing opinions on whether or not it matters, but every time I've done some research, it seems to be that going up to 100Hz doesn't really offer any advantages. FTA TV is only aired in 50Hz by the way.

I could be wrong, but the 50Hz is the refresh rate of the TV, 100Hz in theory will refresh twice as fast, reducing the blur of fast moving objects. I don't think it is related to FTA signals.

The rest I agree with yaziyo, HD only will be fine unless its from a PC or blueray that can actually use the Full HD resolution.

        • Yeah, sorry but you are actually wrong dude! Frankly, I can't understand why people are still falling for that same old BS when these myths have been debunked ad nauseam.

100Hz is not the true refresh rate of a 100Hz TV, it is the interpolated end result of a motion compensation algorithm that is supposed to smooth the image of 24fps film based images which can often suffer from artifacts or judder in the pullup to higher fps playback. Hence why yaziyo rightly points out that it is utterly useless for FTA stuff. Don't believe me, google it.

IMHO, MC is pretty much useless, it brings with it some caveats all of it's own…I turn mine off. ;)

      • Thanks yaziyo. Hmm the power consumption got me; didn't realise it was only 2 star. Not really an issue for me, but for my mum…

Guess I'll keep searching, thanks for your time :)

if you want a 100hz tv, you wont find one for under $300. They do come in this size but I would recommend you go to a store and see the actual difference - Personally I feel it may be one of those things that salesmen use to sell things not because you need it, just because they can, although I do believe the majority of people are both deaf and blind because they use the white ipod headphones and watch crap resolution screens. Who knows maybe you're only deaf, maybe just blind or maybe both ;)

btw so PS2 and dvd do not output HD let alone full HD so thats also something to think about.

      • Nah, not after 100Hz, maybe 60Hz, but like I said, all they're doing is watching FTA TV, dvd's and playing crappy consoles (ie. no PS3/360). And from what I've read and the responses here, 50Hz would be fine anyway.

Can't see a bloody thing clearly without my glasses unless it's 10cm away, so maybe a little blind haha.

50Hz would be fine. 32" go up to 200Hz, which is overkill for what you need. Note that this is only 1366x768 resolution (personally I prefer 1080 if you can get it for around the same price) but if you aren't planning on watching blu-ray then I think that it doesn't really matter (PAL DVD is only 720 x 576). Also take a look at the warranty period. I couldn't find it on the DSE website. But for $50 more (perhaps less if you could haggle) you could get the Sanyo which has a 4 star energy rating (compared with this 2 star) and also comes with a 3 year warranty, as opposed to the 1 year with this. Although someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

      • Cheers hellrazorone (just reminded me I need to buy Hellraiser as an xmas gift… thanks!), actually would prefer that Sanyo one. Guess I'll keep looking since I won't be buying this deal, but I'll keep that Sanyo in mind. Thanks again :)

      • Hellrazorone, where can I get the Sanyo you mentioned?

    • For the list of requirements you've listed there, 50hz for the Wii and PS2 will be fine seeing as they're only standard definition.

[edit] Not sure why it posted my comment here, but it's meant for your first post way above, stig.

  • There may have been a couple of one hour specials, but the one hour deal I got was the 1920x1080 model GE6800 for $298.00. Link is http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GE6800/dick-smith-31-5-quot-…

  • The good guys have a 31.5inch for $288 pay less pay cash on their website.. its a bit more $, but for those who prefer to stay away from the DSE its a good option.

What I ended up doing was I bought this TV at $248, then I bought the cheapest thing I could find with free shipping, to bring the total to just over $250, which allowed me to use the coupon K24XDH863L mentioned in another post to deduct a further $25 off.

The end result is that I got this TV with free shipping for around $226.
