or get the 10850KA for $599

      Availability?

Been flipping coin whether to buy intel now or wait for ryzen availability…

10700k's seem to be cheaper and stand up well against 5600x but available immediately…

Most locals seem OoS, and ebay/amazon are $800 for 5600,

      • -5

But pci4, m.2 gen4, lower power, better security and most importantly team colour red.

        • +2

          But … availability!

I have been thinking of upgrading since late last year and I want to get my first AMD CPU ever, but either everything is out of stock or on the few occasions there is stock the price is like $150-200 over the RRP.

If the choice right now is between something better but unavailable, and something good enough, available and cheaper - Is there really a choice?

          • -1

@Melo: ye dont chuck a FOMO. wait and be rewarded

    • +5

      Comparing 5600x and 10900k, lol

      • Can you elaborate please. Haven't looked at CPUs for ages and quick Google seems to indicate that 5600x has better single core performance.

        • +2

          6c12t vs 10c20t, 5.3 GHz turbo

        • -2

Better single core is marketing jargon, pretty much no task uses a single core these days

In gaming a 5600x performs similar to a 10900k but for productivity workload, 10900k would generally still be a better choice since it has more cores

In saying that you shouldn't buy it, the cpu that you should be buying rn is 10700k and 10850k

10700k same price as 5600x, similar gaming performance 2 extra cores

10850k same price as 5800x, similar gaming performance, 2 extra cores

So unless you're buying 5900x or 5950x, amd is the bad value choice contrary to popular beliefs created by youtubers that are sucking up to amd

          Also note, 10850k is 99.99% a 10900k

          • @ln28909: Thanks for the detailed response. For me sigle core performance is not marketing jargon. When I see higher single core performance, I take it to mean better gaming performance. Different consumers I guess.

            • -3

@Arigato: You can check benchmark, there are games where intel does better games where amd does better, that's because they utilise cpu cores differently, overall as an average 5600x and 5800x still lose to 10900k I think for gaming

              • @ln28909: What are your thoughts on lack of PCIE4? I got a 2TB gen 4 m.2 recently and have been on the lookout for an upgrade on my R5 2600 and while the intels absolutely smash my current set up in raw power, I cant help but feel like I'm settling a bit for a "side grade".

                • @jaejae69: Well if you already have a gen 4 ssd then might as well get amd

Though, I wouldn't recommend people to go buy one if they don't have it already, I dual boot on my pc, one with a gen 4 and one with a gen 3 and I can't notice any difference between them during use

And gen 3 pcie should be sufficient for this generation card I think

Honestly would hate to be in your position rnz your cpu is just probably slightly too weak and there isn't any upgrade that I could recommend

Zen 3 is overpriced for what it provides, zen 2 is probably not enough of a jump, intel is lacking gen4 connection

Though if I have to choose, intel would be the best compromise

                  • @ln28909: Lol yeah the ssd was an impulse buy. Jumped on the $289 Umart deal and was surprised they actually honoured what was probably a price error. Now tossing up how to get full use out of it or just on sell it and take a small profit.

              • @ln28909: I've had a look at gaming benchmarks. The 2 CPUs perform about the same, but the 5600x is significantly cheaper. So for gaming, i'd say the 5600x is better value, and single core performance is a really important thing. I haven't seen this blind faith to intel on ozbargain before, is this new?

                • @Arigato: Look at 10700k and 5600x, they are similar as well, and 10700k is cheaper than 5600x and outperforms in pretty much any other tasks so it's really a no brainer purchase at this point

If you're buying a 5600x even at its msrp, you're not really an ozbargainer

And now 5600x is like what $540 lol

                  • @ln28909: The 5600x is 470 when available. It is an objectively better value CPU for gaming when put against both the 10700k & 10900K.

Due to availability the 10700k is a good choice for gamers.

I am not an AMD or Intel fan, and I've had a lot of issues with my threadripper(not for gaming), so I would personally choose intel at the moment just because I trust their products more, and I am willing to pay a premium.

          • @ln28909: Hey, is there a big difference between the 10700k and the 10700kf?
Just super confused about this at the moment. Thanks

          • @ln28909: There are loads of games that max out single cores these days lmao. Multithreading is pretty hard to do correctly, and deterministic multithreading is significantly harder. I remember one of the old Civs used to have issues with race conditions if you had too many cores. Most old games are single threaded, and a lot of new ones are too. It's only recently that multithreading has started to permeate. Modern examples:

            Factorio
            Stellaris
Total war (not sure about the recent ones)
            Subnautica

            • @l3wis992: yes, they don't use like 12 cores, but they use 2 or 3 cores or something like that normally, so a single core score doesn't really mean anything

              • @ln28909: No, they use primarily a single core with some simple functions multithreaded. Having a fast single clock speed is still very useful for singlethreaded CPU bound games i.e. most indie games and some larger games

  • I still think we will see more specials in the coming weeks. So far the best I have seen is:

    10900KA - $629.10 @ Computer Alliance eBay + discount code - 17th January

    Need the 10700ka @ $430 again!

if you have the money to buy a $700 cpu, this one is better for $50 more, you save more money buying the am4 motherboard rather than lga1200 z boards

    • +1

You may get in trouble for recommending an AMD chip :p
Anyway the 5800x was closer to $600 recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/599211

    • +1

at that price can't recommend the 5800X. Under $600? then sure but at $760 that's really close to 5900X pricing.

      • -3

        still beats the i9 10900k at $699

        • -1

5800x beats 10900k? okay so me proof

          • +1

@ln28909: Most benchmarks and workloads using multiple cores will see the 5800x handily beating the i9. Single core, it's slight edge to the 5800x although the i9 does win some.

My big thing is though I feel this chip might drop more. 11900k leaks have it absolutely creaming the 10900k in single thread.

    • 5800x was already dubbed as terrible value, stop thinking its good because huur durr amd

  • +3

I would recommend this CPU over AMD 8 core 5800x and possibly the 5900x as well if you don't have specific use for the extra cores.

At least this is in stock and can build a computer asap. Yeah it's not the best performing chip but at this price it's feasible in comparison to the competion. I managed to get a 5900x on Amazon in December for $1060 good luck getting one at retail.

    • +1

5800x is available right now at about 720.
5900x also available at 920 (needs x570 purchase on top).

Stock is also constantly trickling in so if you're determined you can get them.

    • +1

Which cooler are you using with that 5900X and how is it performing? No BIOS/AGESA/FCLK issues? Which motherboard did you go with too if you don't mind me asking.

      • +2

        @Fyrelor

        My Build

        AMD 5900x
Noctua NH-D15 (1 fan only right now)
        Asus ROG Strix X570-E
Corsair LPX RAM 4x 8GB (32GB total) running at 3200mhz
Lian Li LanCool Mesh 2 case

        Issues

I put together the whole system and when I booted for first time everything turned on and started spinning but I was stuck on ROG boot screen. I couldn't enter the BIOS or anything while on this screen and I left it running for 5-10mins and wouldnt progress from the ROG screen.
        - All fans spinning all lights turning on and I got some video output so I figured no issue from GPU
        - At first I thought it was peripheral issue and tried changing the keyboards/usb ports but still didnt help
        - Noticed that my board has 4 LED indicators for status and my MEMORY and BOOT lights were amber
        - Took off the 2nd FAN off my Cooler to reseat the memory and tried 1/2/4 sticks and didn't help
        - Then I remembered reading all the horror stories of people not being able to boot with newer Ryzen chips because of BIOS incompatibility
        - Started cursing PC building because why should I expect BIOS incompatibility with X570 + Ryzen 5000 series when its made for it. Also Corsair vengeance RAM has been around for a while so I expect it should work

Read my motherboard book and found that my board supports BIOS flashing via USB. Downloaded latest BIOS from Asus website, powered down the PC and plugged the USB flash drive into the BIOS flash USB port. Held the bios flash button while PC was off and waited 10-15mins.

When I took the USB out and powered on my PC it booted normally and allowed me to enter BIOS. Checked my RAM timings and was correctly running at 3200mhz dual channel.

If it wasn't for my MOBO having the offline BIOS flash I would have probably had to grab an older Ryzen chip or try with different RAM to get it to POST.

        Performance

Running only 1 fan on my cooler on low speed (1000~ RPM) and 3 case fans running at 800RPM I see the following:
        - 1-2 core boost (4900-4950mhz on 2 cores)
        - 3-4 core boost (4800mhz~ on 4 cores)
        - When all cores are pinned its around 4.4-4.5ghz

Idle it runs around 50 degrees and under benchmark stress tests on CPU it peaks around 75 degrees.

Right now I am only running 3 intake fans that came with my case but was planning to get a whole corsair kit (6x 120mm 2x 140mm ARGB) but I held off cause I didn't want to blow $650 on just fans/leds around this time of year. When I get the other fans I plan to put the 2nd Noctua fan back on and then can play with some overclocking.

        • Haha! Yeah BIOS update is required, great that you had BIOS flashback, some motherboards don't have them and you'd have needed an older generation CPU to do the update, which would have been a real pain.

I personally wouldn't go with a $650 kit for fans. Don't forget, more fans does not mean better airflow. If I was you, I'd research the case you have, find a dedicated forum thread with its owners talking about it, or find reviews for what the best airflow configuration is and only buy the necessary fans.

I have the Noctua NH-D15 myself and that will be going into my future upgrade.

          • +1

@ThatsCheap: Hahah yeah I agree more fans doesnt mean better air flow, thats why Im not rushing to get them. The $650 would be mostly for cosmetics I was thinking of just turning my tower into a disco.

Yeah if your motherboard doesn't support bios flashback I don't know what is feasible workarounds. You could buy low end Ryzen CPU or take it to a computer store and have them flash it. Not sure about Asus but I know MSI did offer BIOS upgrade if you sent the motherboard to them in the past but that is not fun.

            Was planning to get:
            - 6x Corsair LL120 fans
            - 2x Corsair LL140 fans
            - Corsair lighting controller
            - Corsair LED strips kit

            • +1

@Julzx: If you enjoy the disco PC, go disco mate Haha

I personally find it distracting because I use the PC with a 43" 4K TV as a monitor for mostly entertainment (movies, TV show, sports viewing), and some gaming. So I have an inverse case that has the open panel on the right side of the case facing away from the TV. I'm on the opposite end, so instead of lighting in the case, I want good air flow for as little amount of noise as possible lol

And so, the citizens of Ozbargain watched as those from house Intel battled against those from house AMD.

    • +1

house AMD ranks better than house Intel is pretty much every tech magazine these days.

safe to say the Intel vs AMD debate is no longer one sided like it was

      • Uh huh. Okay then.

        Bubye now.

  • New gen intel cpu's about to drop arnt they?

    • Z590 motherboards coming out soon, and new Intel CPU's will come out in March. They are claiming big IPC gains, similar to that of AMD, so they will again probably take the gaming crown. However the highest end CPU, the 11900K will be an 8 core 16 thread CPU. While the one above, the 10900K is a 10 core 20 thread CPU, so in heavily multi-threaded workloads, the 10900K and the 11900K will probably be neck and neck in terms of performance. While the 11900K when first released will probably be $750 to $800 here in Australia. In gaming and for future-proofing, the 11900K will be the better CPU though with full support for PCIe 4 and greater single-threaded performance.
