Don't know about these ones in particular, but have moved to carbon steel pans a few months ago, and absolutely love them. Annoyed its taken me this long to discover them!

    • And why is that they are good?

      • +1

My guess = similar to cast iron, but lightweight
Also, OP didn’t include the *…

*Please note: the pan will turn brown after being seasoned.

      • +2

        Some benefits:
        - Carbon steel gets you that really nice browning that telfon can't do.
        - The pan will last a lifetime
        - It's non stick once season AND if you use a little butter (or butter+oil) when you cook.
        - You can get really high searing heat without damaging it. Telfon is toxic at high heat.

        Cons:
        - Not dishwasher safe. But it's easy to clean. Just a tea towel or a light rinse is enough. No detergent
        - You may need to re-season once in a while
        - Does not like acidic food.

The end of the day, it's best to get a pan for each purpose. I have 4 carbon steel pans and love them, but also have teflon for acidic food foods cooked a lower heat.

        • Stainless steel is also good for acidic foods.

    • Do food stick on it?

      • +1

These aren't non-stick, but if seasoned and used properly they are fairly non-stick.

    • Is it true that acidic foods like tomatoes can taste bitter when cooked on carbon steel or do you just make sure the pan is well seasoned to prevent this from happening?

      • +1

Do not cook acidic foods (passata, etc) in your seasoned carbon steel pans. The acidity of the tomato will dissolve any seasoning that you may have built up on the pan. Then you'll have to re-season it.

        • And what about the bitter taste, if one were to use an acidic ingredient, would it taste bitter?

          • +1

@Lizard Spock: Not noticed any bitter taste, and we've been cooking everything including red pasta sauce etc in it.

          • @Lizard Spock: It's possible that the acidic foods are stripping the seasoning off your pan, which is essentially burnt and polymerised oil.

    • How much oil do you find you need to use when cooking?

      • +2

Depends on what's being cooked. I just cooked a steak for my dog in mine and I simply rubbed some olive oil on the steak (no oil in the pan) and it cooked very well. No sticking.

If I'm cooking something like a French omelette which is done at low temperature, I use about half a teaspoon of butter.

So yeah, depends on the food, temperature it's cooked at, etc. It's a bit of a feel you develop after using carbon steel for a while.

    Kogan? No thanks.

  • Carbon steel pans should be hand washed only but Kogan lists as dishwasher safe. Not sure it's carbon steel if it's dishwasher safe.

    • Dishwasher will just damage the pan, which is what they want haha. No point if a pan lasts forever!

    • +1

Detergent and carbon steel in general do not mix. Wash with very hot water and a brush - no detergent.

Dishwasher will strip any seasoning on the pan, causing food to stick and the pan to rust if not completely dry.

$49.90 +shipping unless you sign up to satan

    • So annoying when Satan keeps sending emails about sales.

  • Better off to wait for the Aldi specials really.

    • +2

Has Aldi sold Carbon steel frypans like these before? I've not seen them.

    • I got 2 sets ($50 per set) of nonstick 24cm and 28cm fry pans 6 months ago from aldi and the first set still going strong. I'll buy another set next time on sale.

      • +1

Doesn't sound like we are talking about the same sort of thing

  • oh no. there's no way to cancel Logan first after sign up. they will keep charging your card even you've already cancel it for two months.

  • Do these work on induction?

    • Suitable for use on all cooktops including induction

  • Anyone have these and can comment on them? They look OK for the price, especially having silicon handles too.

The Kogan First price is compelling, but I'm now wary given the comments above - are they really that bad with cancellations?

    • +1

I cancelled Kogan first using the app and had no issues at all..
