Lideer 26cm Smooth Cast Iron Skillet CN¥303.76 (~A$67.13) Delivered @ 立德尔旗舰店 via Taobao

This is the cheapest machine smooth cast iron skillet I have seen from looking online and it's actually got a great design. I personally find the handle comfortable and easy to hold. My lid came broken however, after telling the seller this (and I spoke to them entirely in English), they sent a new one straight away which I should be receiving soon.

I wont get cast iron products from china after this report…
    https://www.removepaywall.com/search?url=https://www.scmp.co…

only trust Le Creuset and Staub

    • Thanks for the link….. Wow…. even Lodge (from USA) cannot be trusted?

      • I think people are conflating enameled cast rion cookware to bare seasoned cast iron cookware. LeCreuset and Staub make enamelled cookware so the iron should not leach into any food. Lodge et al make plain cast iron cookware so metal can potentially end up in your food, particularly if you're using it to stew acidic liquids/sauces, which is not recommended. Use good enamelled dutch ovens and pans for your saucey dishes and stews, use your plain seasoned cast iron or carbon steel cookware for searing/frying/sauteeing stuff. LeCreuset and Staub make the best enamelled cookware that, if maintained, can last several lifetimes so its worth paying the extra money. For plain seasoned cast iron I wouldn't be too concerned about getting a few micrograms of iron on a steak that only takes a few minutes to cook anyway.

    • Me reading this with my Lodge skillet😓

Wow they have the internet on skillets these days?!

        • No, no, he was hugging it and reading together

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these tests were mainly on enamel coated pots.
2 pots without coating were tested, specifically regarding Lodge, these were the findings.

The HK$1,788 Lodge iron pot was found with chromium, iron, manganese and vanadium levels exceeding Council of Europe standards by 0.7 times to 54 times.
The Lodge pot was found to have 2,200 micrograms per kilogram of iron, 54 times higher than the 40 micrograms per kilogram allowed by the European body.
The manufacturer of Lodge products said iron was a key mineral needed for human beings, which explained why the Council of Europe fixed its standards on the principle of keeping it to a reasonable level. It also said manganese was among the least poisonous metals and had not seen any food-related reports of excessive intake.

Hard to actually make sense of this without being a toxicology expert and I couldn't find the actual results tabulated anywhere in the article.
      Good link though, thanks.

I wouldn’t be concerned about extra iron, that is a feature of cast iron cooking.

Typically you avoid high acid food in your cast iron cookware anyway to avoid destroying your seasoned cooking surface.

High acid levels at 95c for 2 hours is not typical for a lodge cast iron pan during normal cooking.

Some people would see iron content as a bonus.

Tam said the tests showed the models could release metals when used to cook acidic food such as ginger and vinegar stew.
“You have to be careful when cooking acidic food. When cooking other kinds of food, it might not release that many metals.”

The Centre for Food Safety said the laboratory tests did not necessarily reflect the results from cooking in normal circumstances.

Yeah pretty sure I know not to make bloody vinegar stew in my bare cast iron unless intentionally trying to reseason it. Surely this is some sort of set up?

    • Hmmmm I wonder how Solidteknics fares

      • not to well if you use their test methodology - ie stewing an acidic dish for two hours. that's why you use an enamelled dutch oven or pan for tacidic dishes and for stews and you keep your seasoned wrought iron, cast iron and carbon steel pans for quick searing, frying and sauteeing operations without any acidic sauces in which case very little metal is going to leach into your food.

Why not grab a carbon steel if you want a smooth surface? And why do you want a smooth surface to begin with?

    • I thought smooth cast iron was bad for getting seasoning that sticks and won't flake off.

      • What I thought and experienced as well

  • Where did you get the shipping info?

  • Don’t forget you need to pay for surcharge when you pay using Austrian credit card for taobao. Than you also need to pay for your credit card company for transfer to Chinese dollar, I was total spent $350AUD ,Taobao charge me $9.52AUD than my ANZ credit card charge me $13.57AUD

    • I get charged in AUD from Taobao and pay exactly what I am quoted. It comes up in my bank as either "TAOBAO.COM AU" or "VISA TAOBAO.COM Melbourne"

How many on Ozbargain are using Austrian credit cards?

I can't believe people are brave enough to buy items with a health and safety component - like cookware - from unknown marketplace sellers 🤯

It sucks when your marketplace SD card turns out to be fake.

It sucks a whole lot more when it turns out that your "cast iron" pan had a decent quantity of lead in the mixture…

@spacemansparrow do you have any way to check this pan is actually safe to cook with ?

    • invite your neighbours for dinner and try it out, or put in pot draw of the sharehouse.

I buy quite a bit from AliExpress but my rule is nothing that I plug into mains power and nothing that touches food or drink..

None of these are brands that have a reputation to uphold or are required to meet standards. No discount is worth the risk.

      • +1

Sorry, who said they couldn't believe people would buy something from somewhere other than Australia ? Did you reply to the wrong thread ?

This thread is about people sourcing cookware from unknown marketplace sellers.

The very first result from your Google link says :

        cookupexperts.com
        9 Feb 2024 ·
Q1: How can I tell if my cast iron pan is lead-free?
A1: Look for pans manufactured by reputable brands that adhere to strict safety standards. You can also have your pan tested by a laboratory or use a commercial lead testing kit.

Which is precisely why buying cast iron pans from unknown marketplace sellers is a bad idea 🤷‍♂️
