I was thinking about purchasing a WD Live.
Would this be a better option?

    • I'm hanging out for a review of Honeycomb (released only in the past fortnight) on the Revue.
There were lots of complaints about the usability/stability of Froyo. Honeycomb ought to be MUCH better, but is it enough?

      • From what we head read in terms of consumer feedback it has made it much better.

  • for the spec this is great!

  • Can it stream media from a network server / share?

    • Yes it can.

  • +1

So is this an Apple TV direct competitor? Looks like a good deal. Especially with the KB.

Just had a quick google.. Looks like its marketed towards US, won't work seamlessly with our FTA channels, not so sure about foxtel tho. Theres no mention of there being any streaming over home network either.

Only good thing about it for us is the browser and android apps.

    • I'm not so worried about the streaming TV, it has Flash and a browser so streaming TV is available through that if need be.
Also has 1080p output so win over the AppleTV in terms of decoding power.
Apparently there's no "OFF" switch though, so it's continuously on and sucking power.

      • I use those remote controlled power point things for that (my Tivo)

      • +2

I bought one a few weeks back, and just got the upgrade to Honeycomb (which really adds to it IMHO).

        • The TV integration doesn't work here, nor does Netflix/Amazon/etc, but YouTube/Vimeo/etc work very well. There's no tuner or PVR; it's a network streamer.
        • The hardware is nice, and I can turn on & control my amp & TV through the Revue, even via my phone & tablet.
        • It streams media from my network (wired & wifi) via DLNA (no Renderer profile [push support] by default, but there are apps for that now).
        • Format support is decent, plays back 1080p MKVs quite nicely, but unfortunately won't play DTS at all, so it's not a full replacement for my Astone streamer yet :-/ That said, it's much faster and nicer to use than the Astone's crappy UI, so I use it where I can.
        • If you use a DLNA server that supports on-the-fly transcoding of DTS to AC3/AAC, then you're in business.
        • The standard Logitech Media Player has given me nothing but grief :-( But now I have the Market, so I downloaded a GTV Player app which was excellent, much faster & more reliable, and would play back files from Windows shares directly.
        • Some other really nice apps on the Market - IMDB is great, for example.
        • For $90 it's a bargain. It may not meet all your needs out of the box, but there are many apps you can download to help that, and many more coming.
        • Thanks for this, I guess I'll stick to xbmc on atv2 for now … not really fussed about 1080p, and DTS support is more important to me, buy yeah not a bad price for these

        • Yep this is built, designed and supported for US market only. It won't be released in other regions by Logitech. Some services/applications may or may not work and there is no local Service/Support for it unfortunately so ensure your seller can provide that when required and check for power requirements.

  • should be an improvement on the regular Android box like the Kogan.

I put up an article in the forums about building a cheap but very good Home Theater PC for about $250. Much better than WDTV Live in my opinion. And yes, I have owned a WDTV Live and hacked it with WDLXTV…

    • +2

Nah, your setup is big, uses more power, take longer to bootup from power off, and too difficult for my misses to use. I will stick with the WD TV Live.

Hmmm…wonder if NBA league pass android app will work in Australia on it???

    • With a SSH tunnel it should, Along with Netflicks and all the other cool stuff.

[edit] To clarify, SSH tunnel to a box hosted in the USA, virtually giving you Google TV an IP address in USA.

  • Looks interesting, though I don't see an RCA/audio output on the device.

I wonder how feasible it would be to stream audio through the Logitech via Ethernet/WiFi for music to play on home stereo equipment (controlled via android mobile), ie get audio into receiver with no connections to any PC.

    • No, there's no analogue audio; HDMI or optical S/PDIF only.

Yes, you could push audio to it remotely. It won't do that out of the box, but there are a few apps on the Market you could download that'll do it - anything with DLNA Renderer (not just Player) support. BubbleUPnP springs to mind.

      • Appreciated, I may have to check that out.

  • I am confused with this…

    We have the "new" product

Logitech 970-000001 Revue With Google TV - Web Browser, Internet Apps, Companion Box, Intuitive Keyboard, Built-in Expandability
    Product Dimensions: 16.4 x 8.2 x 3.6 inches ; 4.4 pounds
Shipping Weight: 5 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
    Item model number: 970-000001

and then we have the "refurbished" product here

Logitech 996-000104 Revue With Google TV - Web Browser, Internet Apps, Companion Box, Intuitive Keyboard, Built-in Expandability (Refurbished)
    Product Dimensions: 16.4 x 8.2 x 3.6 inches ; 4.1 pounds
Shipping Weight: 1 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
    Item model number: 996-000104

So why the difference in manufacturing number, product and shipping weights with the refurbished one compared to "new" ???

Refurbished shipping weight just 1 pound????

Refurbished "Usually ships within 2 to 5 weeks"? Pay now and receive maybe in two months??

Is this still a good deal??

    • +1

The refurb might be packed in a plain box. The new one in the original box with more cardboard padding in it and tips it a few ounces over into the 5pound shipping category. The manufacturing number might just be to reflect it being a refurb? Just Googled that number and I reckon it is the refurb code.

Good details on it here (pics & diagrams):

      http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-det…

      • Thanks for that.

Yeah I did a Google on that code as well and it seems like its the same product, just a different code for the refurb. one.

But the shipping time is a worry.

2-5 weeks ? This means that at a minimum it will get to us in 5 weeks and possibly two months.

Many other better deals could happen while we wait for this to get here.

        • At least they're being honest about the shipping time, so many places aren't. The price of the unit may come down a bit, but you'd be lucky to get shipping from the US for that again. I'd say you won't get it for less than this. Shipping for multiples is cheap ($10 for 2)

        • is that code from an earlier retired model, I wonder?

    • I bought it a while ago, it was $99, new. I'm just using the keyboard with my htpc. I haven't really used the main box, only enough to check it works, and measure power consumption - 10W.

      • I presume it has an international power brick? So all we need is an Australian cord?

        • Yeah, just uses a standard figure 8 mains cord to the brick.

  • Interesting product. As a media player/online content provider probably can be beaten. The real difference is that it's available on screen while you're watching your other device (e.g. PVR). Also the Google Apps might be good.

  • seems to be the cheapest DESKTOP option if added a monitor to it :D
i wonder how long does it take from a full power off to on & online.

    • Cold start takes a little under 30 seconds, at a guess.

  • So this is not Suitable for Aus tv reception?

    • It's not a tuner. You plug a PVR into it

  • It's possible these are only sold as refurbs because they have had Android 3.1 put on them. Originally they sold with Android 2. It would seem a lot of work for them to do that, but maybe they just weren't selling with version 2 (and at $299).

  • Oh sod, it has a fan. I hate tv devices with fans, they're so noisy.

    • It's quiet, barely audible. I can't hear mine over the sound of distant traffic, even in the evenings.

  • According the Eric Schmidt, head of Google, you can expect to get Google TV in most new TV coming to the market in the next 6-12 months. Online speculation is that many of those units will be on display at CES 2012, January 10-13.

So if you are in the market for a new TV, save your cash and hold on for a little longer. Of course, you will probably have to supply your own keyboard.

    http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/43396/schmidt-google-tv-majo…

    • Looks like a great keyboard, but what you suggest may also be an option; now that shipping is 17AUD, deal has become $100.

for an alternative, box, a "new" 'WD TV Live' via eBay 20+76 ($96AUD), is a little less pricey, though it is not Google.

Keyboard definitely would have been very good for $90

  • Just ordered one from Amazon with Priority delivery. all up $112. Pretty good deal! I'm hoping the Adaptor it comes with is compatible with 240V! Anyone know whether it does?

    • Yes, it's universal - 240V is fine.

      • Thanks for that Namarrgon

  • somehow i cannot get the Logitech Harmony® for Revue app for android, does anyone know why? is it not competible for phones?

    • They've marked it as US-only; I guess to avoid cluttering non-US market listings? Annoying for those who imported it anyway, but you can Google for the .apk file, download it to your phone, and install that directly (I did that, works well).

  • Just got an email from Amazon to say I'll get it earlier - by Dec 28_29th.

    • Same here
"Logitech Revue with Google TV (Refurbished)"

      Nice!

      • Same here :)

        • 1 package via DHL International with tracking number ….
          expected delivery now 23Dec2011.

Amazon must be getting them for a song.

  • Blimey, you couldn't even Aust Post it interstate for $8.95. How can they DHL it for that much? Must say Amazon is a great place to shop.

  • Now 16.67 postage - not such a great deal at this time.

    Items: AUD 83.59
    Shipping & Handling: AUD 16.67
    Total Before Tax: AUD 100.26
Estimated Tax To Be Collected: AUD 0.00
    Order Total: AUD 100.26

  • the device arrived yesterday. The refurbed unit is Brand New!

Theres plenty on the thing but can't see ITV, ABC iview or SBS Catchup.
Don't see by what means to install your apps off a usb stick/drive.

As Namarrgon said earlier, does play 1080p. But no dts (yet). Tried the in built Logitech player, GTV and Plex off market place - all a must.

    Builtin SlingPlayer excellent!

  • My order is expected to ship today the 27th; 98.XX dollars: I took the plunge after all :\

I am an avid appreciator of GOOGLE, and I just reiterate what most have already spoken ie that we greatly anticipate forthcoming supports such as '1080p with dts'; get that up to 100% and you'll earn thumbs-up, with cheers all-round the globe.

The hardware is nice, and I can turn on & control my amp & TV through the Revue, even via my phone & tablet.

    Very enticing. For those of us patching aged amplifier setups ie have only -RCA analogue- (neither HDMI or Optical), I wonder if a solution could be worked for getting sound passed through these boxes;

Two brief options occur to me.
    1) HDMI "Y Splitter" plus HDMI to 5 RCA Adapter =~$9.21 delivered
Meaning - Picture to TV using HDMIOut#1 +Audio in to old amp/receiver via HDMI#2

    2) "Toslink to Analog" Audio Converter plus Toslink Cable 2M =~$22.77 delivered
Meaning - Picture to HDMI TV as usual +Audio through Toslink Converter/cable

I have placed initial bets on the "Splitter-Adapter/ approach 1)" being sufficient [economic through eBay], aimed toward success with some ($22.77 - 9.21) $13.56 in saving.

Just in getting the hardware bits set, are either of those methods likely to prove effective?
-Could someone knowledgeable point to any other alternative < $25.00?

    *Amps cost $300.00

  • Pretty good box. I was wondering how it would go controlling my receiver and TV given that it's in the same shelf - no problem - it must have a very strong signal (also comes with an extension IR doo dah if it doesn't work that you place in front of your non receiving device). Can't work out how to do ad skipping but I think you can ad custom key commands. Online streamed video looks excellent (mind you mine comes through a fancy upscaler in my processor).

Haven't found a decent weather app (so many Android ones use sites that are not accurate for Australia).

Works fine with my devices - it must use the Harmony remote database of devices (being Logitech) so has a huge database of models. If yours is not there you could try installing the Harmony software on your computer and teach it your remotes commands, then the Google TV would be able to install it.

Lots of content, more than other media players I have. Other brands have a lot of useless (to me) asian channels which is pretty rich given they're sold in English speaking countries. Their English content is often pretty poor too. The GoogleTV's is pretty good. The stuff we can't get (without a VPN connection) is usually paid anyway. Some good stuff for little kids to (if you have them) - including read along story books (although in an American accent).

  • price inc. shipping creeping up. 2nd one I ordered upon receiving first 23rd, shipped today with i-Parcel lieu DHL.
    1st ordered 17th $88 landed, 2nd ordered 23rd $98 and third now looks about $20 more again.

Daver, couple good leads there but the hdmi splitter "can only handle one output at a time."

    • I just got $97.96

I find the fan a bit loud. Might operate on it like I did with my Topfield TF2460. Rubber mounted the fan and put a small fan speed controller to cut the speed in half. The room I have it never gets over 24 degrees when I'm using it so should be ok (if that fits inside).

  • 2nd arrived today via i-Parcel.

    I must recommend unblock-us.com

    • Are you able to access all TV content using unblock-us.com?
      what about netflix or hulu?

finally set mine up yesterday but so far not impressed.

  • Hey guys while Revue isn't officially supported in this region, there is a Forum on logitech.com that may have some useful info and you can probably ask questions there too, here is the link; http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Smart-TV/ct-p/cat-smart-tv
