I've got mine overclocked to 4.1ghz stable. It's quiet, cool and works well for gaming imo.

      • How have you managed to overclock it? Mine doesn't seem to like the overclock.

        • +2

Each individual CPU has different yield quality from the imperfect process, the 1600AF where 2600's that weren't up to standard.

Some people got ones that were not any different than a regular 2600 due to the 1600/AF budget category being very popular, I got one that couldn't get enough of an overclock for it to be worth it's but it still runs within 5% benchmarks as my fathers regular 2600.

        • Have you upped the voltage at all? I don't think they're supposed to oc particularly well but I'd think you could get at least some small gains

    • +3

$150 was excellent value for the performance it offered.

    • +9

How is 70 - 75% of the performance of a 3600 at less than half the price a hard sell for a budget build? Chuck a $300 or so graphics card in with it and it'll have you playing 1080p Medium settings on a heap of great games nicely.

    • +4

If it's a hard sell, what's better at $150 for gaming?

      • I don't disagree with the statement that $150 is excellent value for this CPU.
However I was able to pick up an i4 9400F for $150 at around the same time as these were available.
And for that price in some games the 9400F is better, but in some the 1600AF is better.

i5-9400F currently showing on staticice for $195 btw - i.e. $10 more than this deal

        • The difference is pretty negligible though, unless you're gaming at poor graphics settings or a low resolution (1080p or less) and even then it's 5-10% if that. If you're gaming at 1440p the difference is essentially zero between these CPUs. I think that makes a CPU like the 1600AF/2600 advantageous over the 9400F with productivity workloads thanks to SMT and you can overclock it easily to get even further ahead. The hard sell claim is silly at $150 but even against competition at the $200 price point the 1600AF/2600 is still on top in my opinion. Could even throw the 3300X into the mix but then you lose productivity due to less cores/threads.

    • Which games stress this CPU more than a $300 video card?

      • Factorio? I am intrigued by the game but I don’t dare to buy it yet.

  • +8

It is on Zen+, not Zen 2.

  • +4

Correction Zen+ architecture not Zen2. + is the 2000 series, the 1600 AF and 3000 series APUs. Zen 2 is 3000 series desktop and 4000 series APUs.

  • +2

r3 3100/3300 better buys me thinks

    • +1

3300x is never in stock + is $50 more if it was in stock. This also has 6 cores 12 threads over 4 cores 8 threads (which offers a touch of “futureproofing”)

  • +3

Is it a stock shortage thing? Because otherwise, this isn't much of a bargain at all

Edit: Still a decent low-mid end CPU though

    • It was released for $150 and the price slowly crept up to $160 ~ $175 as stock numbers dwindled. And the same thing is happening with GPU's…

The Ryzen 3 3100 was also kind of overpriced. All the reviewers plus the AMD marketing material list the CPU as having a MSRP of US$99, though in reality the high demand, and lack of supply led to huge price jacks that made the CPU less price competitive overall. this led to people buying the older Ryzen 2600 and 1600AF as a budget alternative.

  • +1

Man I am waiting for the big cpu specials to come out, or ebay 20% code :/ like either will happen soon tho

  • wow great find, i got one of these already, just ordered a 3600 because i dont really need it but wasnt going to pay $170 for 3200g which is significantly slower than this thing

  • +17

i5 10400f for $215 pickup at MSY seems a lot sweeter of a deal to me

    • +4

      but this is ryzen so it must be better. no exceptions :}

      • +2

        Intel bad amd good

  • +1

This still packs a respectable whallop. Great entry point for gaming

  • Anyone aware of a decent gaming GPU sub $500 for an Intel CPU?

    Missed this :(

At the moment cant find any graphics cards in stock

    • asus rtx2060 is rrp $448/459 at saveonit/centrecom while this would be the price of 2060super on sale

      • Think it's worth waiting for the 2060 super to go on sale for around $500 or wait for new models to drop? Not in a massive rush..
        Out of the loop :(

Want to use with Quest 2 and cyberpunk..

        • +1

2070super was $539 or $559 with a 480gb ssd here. Since its performance is like 90% of 3060ti it might be worthier waiting for this

    • Edit: can't privately sell here

    • How about a 5600 xt? Plenty of stock for about $450 3 fan versions.

    • Used 1080Ti for sub $500.

    • Going to hold out for a epic OzB bargain.. However long that takes..

  • +7

This would be great @ $139 or something.. it's just too close in price to the superb 10400F which can be had for around $209 not on sale

  • Good price and definitely suitable for a nice budget build. Amazing how older AMD procs have held up their performance.

  • -4

Wow, I'm quite new to Ryzen, but I've heard stories that this is one of the best budget Ryzen's you can get out there. Surprised to see it for such an awesome price, this is a definite steal, congrats OP on the find 👍

    • +1

It was until the 3100 and 3300X came out (from a gaming point of view)
If it's from a productivity point of view and at this price there's arguments to be made for the 10400F to be better value due to higher clock speeds and having an upgrade path.

      • +1

Lol personally I'd argue the AM4 having better features in terms of upgrade path (B450 if you don't need PCIe 4.0, B550 if you do) at price parity price point in terms of motherboard, mainly due to Intel locking out memory overclocking in B460 boards.

    • +1

Wait lol why did I get downvoted hahaha. I offended no-one here

  • +2

why is this old ass cpu still so expensive? Intel look like the better buy

    • It's just over a year old (two years newer than the 1600 you may be confusing it with?). And was a price to performance beast in Zen clothing.

Surprised the crap out of all the reviewers, mainly due to the dodgy naming, who rated it highly and caused it to sell out very fast.

  • -4

to anyone thinking this is a good low end cpu, for the price it's not worth it since u can just add $100 more to the price and get a 3600 amd which performs 70% better.

    • +2

get a 3600 amd which performs 70% better.

It's more like 5-15% depending on the game.

    • +2

      Tech jesus found otherwise.

      ttps://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3547-amd-r5-1600-af-cpu-review-best-cpu-under-100

      • +1

        God bless Tech Jesus,

Although it is somewhat decent for lower end builds. $185 isn't RRP if your comparing it to tech jesus quote $85 in the video. Even considering AUD-USD.

Would love to see better deal than $185!

    • Your mileage will definitely vary on this one. I've been trying to find a sub-$300 3600 for months but keep missing out (though I do want somewhere accepting PayPal so I can buy it for "free" with Shopback cashback).

  • +4

isn't 10400F a better deal? saw some deals for $199 sometime back

    • If you’re not planning on upgrading at all it’s a better build.

    • +1

Or for gaming, a 10100f which is around $100

      • yep, considering only single core performance

  • +5

I can't help thinking that AF stands for as fkk

  • +2

Ryzen 3500X can be had on aliexpress for around $180AUD at the moment which is what I'd go for instead of this.

    • 3500X at $180 should be a better choice comparing to this $185 1600.

    • This is a genuine question but are Aliexpress reliable for a high dollar value item? I've bought a few low cost items from them and some have arrived, some arrived late and some never arrived.

      • +1

AliExpress is almost like Chinese eBay for stores. Some stores are reputable, some aren't. Generally I've had good results even for expensive items when going with highly rated stores.

      • +1

I've had an extremely good experience with aliexpress and found that when things don't arrive or arrive damaged, I get refunds in short order. I know not everyone's experience has been the same, though.

  • +1

I would favour the 3100 over the 1600 at this price point. The 3100 might be slightly slower for multithreaded, but faster single core and better power consumption.

  • Good stopgap CPU for those riding out the zen3 shortage/scalping going on

  • Now showing no stock.
