        I've had 5 liters for over a year now, cleaned out a lot of electronics and used it to remove sticker residue…

        Doubt I've used more than 500ml.

        5 liters for odd uses is a lot

        Washing motherboards and graphics cards.

        Basically anything I want to clean but would prefer not to wait till it dries of ALL moisture before using.

        5L is really not much if you're in work or hobbies where its called for.

        My mate works in a hospital in the US and just drops his watch, phone and keys in a 'bucket' of it while he showers himself.

      Look up the WHO guidelines; you need a small amount of peroxide also, as there are a few bacteria which dont mind alcohol, and can thrive in a DIY mix.

      Metho has additives to stop people drinking it, I find this can leave residue on glass or such. Also IPA smells a way better I think.

      Everyday use definitely stick to diggers metho if you don't mind the smell.

      I use metho for most things apart from electronics or cleaning glass.

      Careful with the metho you choose though, some can have some nasty additives, and you really don't want any that have methanol in them.

      Diggers is good. It's pure ethanol with a couple little things to discourage drinking. Those little things make up less than 0.2% of the mix too, so I'd honestly trust it on electronics

      Most "100%" iso will outdry metho easily, and you don't have to investigate different brands additives.

      That said, diggers brand metho is great.

    Bought this few months ago from catch and it's very diluted like watered down. Doesn't have same efficacy as some other I have tried from Bunnings or Sydney chemicals.

          I wouldn't be surprised. Other brands like Sydney Chemicals have warnings all over their bottles - even one saying if in contact with skin to wash away with soap and water. This one makes it sound like you can use it anywhere without too much concern.

            @xlimit: It's isopropyl alcohol, it's not very dangerous. Unless you're purposely trying to hurt yourself it's not a hazard.

            It'll dry your skin out weird, but it doesn't burn it anything. I never bother with gloves when using it, and often just apply it to a towel on my hand.
            I'd consider it safe for adults.

            Can't defend this brand mind you, as I've never used it.

            That being said, I just checked my bottles, and you're right, they have several walls of text about safety and storage

              @Salmando: That's too dismissive imo. Very high concentration IPA should NOT be used regularly on the skin, hence "rubbing alcohol" is diluted. Like pretty much everything it CAN be dangerous if mis- or over-used. Diluted IPA is also recommended for cleaning things like your laptop etc.

                  Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions between 60% and 90% alcohol with 10 – 40% purified water, is rapidly antimicrobial against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Once alcohol concentrations drop below 50%, usefulness for disinfection drops sharply. Notably, higher concentrations of alcohol don’t generate more desirable bactericidal, virucidal, or fungicidal properties.

                  The presence of water is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl alcohol.         Its 100% false advertising, the question is by how much? It is at most 99%, and thats so unlikely at this price, and in that type of container.

        Reason being, this isn't a vacuum sealed container, so moisture will have entered during filling.

        Anything over 98% gets VERY expensive to manufacture.

        Id almost bet the label means "100% of 70% isopropyl alcohol" or something, just like rubbing alcohol is advertised.

            Even if it started at 100% which I highly doubt, a plastic container will allow that to drop at least a few tenths of a percent within days.

            You'll notice even expensive local medical grade stock will only promise "98-100%" in their msds, because making alcohol in a vacuum is very VERY expensive.

            I buy by the 40gal drum, from a chemical specialist, and even in a lined metal container, stored in a 'dry room' they wont promise more than 99.8%.

          most isopropyl i have only claim 99% due to hygroscopic nature and it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, so 100% would be specialized and expensive to package.

          Pretty common container and percentage claim for the majority of this stuff you'll find for consumers.

          Sydney solvents send their product like this, at a decent price, with the same claim of 100%.
          I've used there stuff and it evaporated surprisingly quicker than the majority of 98% and 99% materials I used in anal volume before hand

      Bunnings doesn't even sell 100% IPA. Also I dilute my 99% IPA to 70% to clean electronic shavers and there's no discernible difference in viscosity or smell.

        I have isopropyl that I know is 99.9% pure. Compared to that, this evaporates a lot slower and leaves some kind of film residue.

          Yes, exactly, this takes ages to evaporate . The diggers brand I bought from Bunnings evaporates quickly and while cleaning adhesive residue, it works much better, but this brand needs a lot, possibly 3 times the amount to clean similar area

      Any chance you could weigh it? Isopropyl alcohol is far lighter than water so if it weighs significantly more than 785g per litre then your suspicion would seem correct.

      Do you still have some left?

      There is a very easy way to test its purity, and that's by weighing it.

      Isopropyl is significantly lighter per volume than water. 1 litre of 100% isopropyl will weight 785g at room temp (approx 25c). Water is obviously 1kg.

      Scale it to 100ml…. If it weighs significantly more than 78.5g then it has been diluted.

      sterilizing tattoo needles is a possible use …. but it’s a great metho replacement because there are no additives that can leave residue…. haven’t bought metho in 3 years, just use iso and buy it when on special.

      Unless you genuinely need something to not have residue, you're better off going to Bunnings and buying the metho, which the boondal? brand is pretty much pure ethanol and can be easily distilled into a gin if you're bored so its safe use while being cheap enough to literally shower things in.

      Considering using it to make tincture … with the amounts used per tincture dose (1 drop) the 'drinkability' issue is irrelevant: the issue is its performance in extracting the relevant substance from the (ahem) relevant plant matter .

      (Plus, you can't get Everclear in Oz, for the same reason that weed is illegal… us humans have to wait for the death of the last Mrs Jessup wannabe: not many people know, but Femina Semi-Sapiens MrsJessupensis is the only thing more sanctimonious than Karen from HR)

      Not sure you'll get it cheap though, it's classed as dangerous good - so will need to be delivered via courier, increasing the price.

              @JimB: You can probably just use it directly. It costs about $20/kg:

              Basically just add a teaspoon to warm-hot water (you don't need much at all).

              The solution breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash (washing soda) and remains active for about 5-6 hours. Eventually it breaks down into just oxygen and water.

              Pure stuff will irritate eyes and skin - so wear gloves and some eye protection to be safe.

              Fully submerge what you want cleaned in it, and soak for 10-20 mins. Then just rinse off with water.

              This is the active ingredient in laundry cleaner, plus also used by beer/brewery cleaners to clean all their equipment before use.

              The video creators are a bit annoying in their delivery, but it shows lots of different variations of it's use.

              Also, safe enough to tip down drains/toilets after use - will help clean them too.

                I know of sodium percarbonate aka napisan, didn't know it broke down to hydrogen peroxide.

                Learn new stuff everyday.

                Odd you can get 1kg of Aldi napisan which is 1/3rd sodium percarbonate which equates to $15 a kilo of sodium percarbonate. The balance of ingredient is largely sodium carbonate.

      Weirdly enough, if you do drink this with regular alcohol you should be fine, though it will be almost entirely disregarded by your body and you'll pee it out in a pretty pure form which will hurt.
      But if you do drink some, the best way to avoid poisoning is to consume large amounts of ethanol.

        Isopropyl alcohol can enter the body three ways: ingestion, inhalation, and absorption.

        The first way is most direct, and easiest to avoid. Since ingesting IPA causes rapid intoxication, people sometimes drink it when conventional alcohol is unavailable, or as a means of suicide. Ingesting isopropyl alcohol has an immediate effect on the central nervous system, which controls the involuntary actions of the body, including heartbeat, breathing, and gag reflex. Isopropyl alcohol slows these functions and may shut them down altogether. IPA is so strong that it can induce hypothermia and subsequent cardiac arrest. The blood’s thinning also causes blood sugar levels to fall so sharply that seizures may result.

          I stated that in the event some idiot uncle drank it thinking it was funny, then feeding him decent amounts of ethanol will prevent poisoning.

            @Salmando: Sorry, I was suggesting that your idea of pumping a "large amount" of ethanol into someone as an antidote might work better if done in sunlight. It's odd that no-one else appears to adopted your idea for IPA poisoning first aid but history shows that medical advances sometimes come by pure accident.
