genuine toner i think is $150 each
the compatible toner is like $120 for black and all colours
i’ve used compatible toner for my current hp laser and i find it gets streaks after a while and runs out much faster.
i’ll probably stick to genuine toner
i think it works out to under 10 cents per page for colour.
about 2-3 cents for black per page
OW sells this model too so pricebeat away.
HP put out a new firmware recently bricking most MFC from using 3rd party toners.
Not their greatest marketing effort.
Brother have done the same.
Although for Brother printers I believe it's simply a matter of removing the chip from the genuine cartridges that come with the printer and transferring them to the non-genuine cartridges.
Toner cartridges are where they make all their money
Do you know if there is a way to roll back to the previous firmware if I already updated it?
I've rolled back a Lexmark firmware before as long as you get a hold of the old firmware.
What Lexmark (and I assume other manufacturers) do is they remove the old firmware when they release the new one. So you might have to track the old firmwares from places like Softpedia (or similar). Although the authenticity of files from those places are not always guaranteed.
A quick Google will give you a few options.
HP put out a new firmware recently bricking most MFC from using 3rd party toners.
It is called HP Instant Ink. It is a subscription-based system.
my M277dw had an update few weeks ago, would that model be bricked from using 3rd party toners you think ?
Have this printer at work and it does the job just fine. Printing colour and b&W documents no problem.
But toner refills are expensive, like $600 for the set. I have nothing to compare to so I'm not sure if that is standard for a laser printer like this.
Op are you sure there are generic toners for this model? If it’s a new release chances are you won’t be able to get the cheap replacement toners.
i have the m277dw currently and i’ve been using compatible toner for years.
the printer knows it’s not genuine but let’s you use it anyway. there are different compatible toners, i had 1 batch that didn’t work because it was missing a chip or something off ebay but others have been fine
won’t know about this printer till i get it but i’ll probably stick to genuine toner anyway

Seems like a pretty good price. I've got a Brother MFC that has similar specs. Cost a little less, but is less fancy on the software side of things.
Annoyingly, yet another MFC where the ADF is not auto duplex though. If you're going to have duplex printing and an ADF, then make the ADF scan duplex too. My 2c. Maybe by my next upgrade it'll be mainstream. Previous printer lasted a good 8 years or so and was only $100.
Any idea of toner cost and how good the quality of comparable toner might be ??
