  • Price beat is not a deal?

    • $488 is already a deal

  • Pixel 4a 5G better

  • How do people rate this compared to realme 7 pro for roughly same price? (I'm leaning towards picking up the realme)

I will be the first to be political here….

NO MORE CCP PHONES… (I am currently using a Huawei and Xiaomi, that will be my last CCP phone).

Yes its is painful, yes it hurts the wallet when you can buy a really decent CCP make 5G phone, but someone have to make a stand!!

As for the phone, this is the best you can get for a non CCP phone at this price range. This phone is particular ideal for people that is on Optus as it has both the Optus bands so should have carrier aggregation in 5G (and 4G as well). Everything else is a bit mid core but Samsung (Korea) does not have a 1.4 billion population internal market to allow dumping super cheap device on the market.

The crucial feature that is missing is wifi6,. Having said that. dont think there is Wifi6 phone at the price.

      • You are ignoring the glaring obvious 720p screen on a $488 phone. I know I wouldn't buy 720p screen phone at this price range, even iPhone SE has better ppi.

        • Samsung Galaxy A51 5G IS 1080 x 2400M similar price range, but no N40 so no 5G CA.

From what I read about the potential of 5G CA, I would happy to trade N40 with 1080 any day.

Of course iphone SE is better but its a whole $300 (128G) more and this can go on forever as another can say if you go for Iphone SE may as well go for S20 FE………

@syswong: You are more likely to spend time looking at screen (duh) than actually using 5G. In place where 5G is good then 4G is already good, and where 4G is crap (B28) then you can forget about 5G. 5G lacks the wide range coverage compare to 4G due to its shorter wavelength.

            • @Bigboomboom: 4g is faster on a 5g phone.

            • @Bigboomboom: Thanks for worrying but I live in CBD, I move as far as Haymarket to Wynyard so your concern is not mine and able to be move on to the uncrowded frequencies can't be a bad thing. Also may I remind you again this phone on Optus will have CA on 4G and 5G. Here comes my problem, I am not prepare to spend almost $500 to find out how good this actually gets.

BTW to me 720, 1080, 4K makes no difference to someone who is partial signed (me). Should have explained that. Having said that this would make the phone last much longer. Not everyone needs 1080p on their phone.

              • @syswong: 4G B40 is reserved for 4G Broadband only, none of the phone can use it.

My Pixel 5 has B40 and no it doesn't get that 4G speed the Optus 4G modem has. You are assuming it wrong.

                  • @syswong: "Note the 2300MHz listed above was for Vivid Wireless and is only available in some of the Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane metro areas: i.e. not in NBN fixed wireless areas."

Did you even read? B40 for 4G has been a long time reserved only for 4G broadband.

If you are talking about N40, that's a moot point as it's 5G and we already discussed usefulness of 5G. In short, if you get great 5G speed you already in an area with great 4G speed (and wider coverage). If you think getting 1-2Gbps is important then I will have to remind you your internet will be limited by the server for whatever service you are using. Both App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android) server can't handle more than 25-30MB/s or ~ 240Mbps based on my own testing. You may be able to speedtest at 1-2Gbps but that's all you can do atm, speed test.

                    • @Bigboomboom: That is the background of the band, that's it. May ne this explains it further:

                      https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Network-Coverage/AC800S-no-…

FYI I have B40 towers around my block and I have seen my P30 lock onto it.

I don't want to argue with you on 5G. It is very new and I don't have equipment to prove it to you but I do think you are wrong. In CBD where the 4G space is so crowded, sure it helps is you can lock on to an uncrowded stable 5G signal, its simple law of physics.

If you read into the detail of 5G is the capacity of the spectrum and the range od the frequency that make it so fast. Yes we are yet to see that super fast speed but report from test of Optus' CA is very promising. Give it time, we are in Australia not CCP ruled wasteland where they can just print money, buy equipment and deploy 5G everywhere so htey can keep an eye on everyone.

            • @Bigboomboom: …true, I often turn off even 4G and get better coverage and speed from 3G if Im getting onagain/offagin 4G! Im streaming tv to my phone without dropouts in Bundy on holidays all on 3G as 4 was spotty

It’s good to see 5g becoming more economical. The battery score for this phone on gsmarena is impressive. I guess if you just wanted an affordable 5g phone with great battery life than probably won’t find much better than this right now. I suppose moving forward there will be lots of more budget oriented phones using this chip and big batteries coming out over the next year. This means telco will be more inclined to develop their 5g network as more users will be able to take advantage of it. Happy to see some cheap 5g phones coming out.

yeah can't see any advantage on 5g phones at the moment.. good price even without 5g tho

This phone could be on eBay plus deal next June for $249.

One glaring con of this phone that JB Hi-fi does not tell you is that the screen is 720p.

  • +1

720p but is it even AMOLED?

    $400+ is insane

    • According to kimovil it sis AMOLED indeed.

      • So it's colour accurate.
        But it's still pixelated.
Need 1080p and Faster refresh rate and this would be a winner!

        • You can get all that on a S20 FE and pay the price…
