Free VPN with Speedtest (2GB/month via IPVanish)

150

I noticed Speedtest is offering a free VPN service now, giving you 2GB/month for free. Service is offered via IPVanish and VPN can be turned on in the Speedtest app, or in a separate app.

Not bad for the occasional use!

You are right, I'll change it now.

This would be ideal for downloading torrents, as you don't need a VPN for downloading the torrents, you only need it for accessing the blocked websites such as PirateBay LimeTorrents etc. You can switch off the VPN before downloading the torrent, meaning you would (at most) only use a few MB's for accessing the website.

You can unblock a number of websites by changing your DNS, a quick google for Cloudflare DNS or "Google DNS" will explain this in more depth. I recommend changing it at a router level. Using these services is free.

As lasterato said, definitely overkill just for bypassing government website blocks. Permanently change your DNS it's free, easy and can even speed things up or be more secure (Cloudflare).
Generally when talking about VPNs and Piracy, the VPN is used when downloading the torrent to prevent your actual IP being revealed.

      • Others may have different experiences, but dns change did not work for me avoiding geo restricted news and documentaries from Europe. I have to use a vpn.

Thats because you're talking about a different thing.

Australia uses dns blocking to stop australians viewing websites the government doesnt like; so it fixes that.

What you're talking about is server side; only serving to IPs that fall into a certain geolocation.

Sometimes you can bypass that by FORCING IPv6 exclusively; since its not strictly geofenced yet.

Otherwise, yes, thats what a vpn is for.

        • The dns change is only getting past what is blocked in Aus due to laws.

This is terrible advice. The risk of being sued for torrenting is small in Australia but the negligible cost of a VPN is worth it. Especially if you're with a smaller ISP that might be targeted by copyright holders.

And if you dont want a vpn for other reasons consider a torrent box. I pay about 7.50 a month for 150gig. Its a little flakey at times (all the cheap ones are) but I really like the convenience as I dont download much, I just stream from the box to kodi.

        • Which torrent box do you use, pls?

            @bukowski73: https://evoseedbox.com/#Pricing
Just be aware like all cheap seed boxs there can be problems here and there, but Ive had way less with these guys.
The longest its been down was 18 hours and Ive only had to contact them twice in a year. If that seems bad the last 3 I was with all had 24-48 hours of no response on support tickets.
Most times if there is a prob just resetting the server fixed it. All cheap boxs have rtorrent timed out issues, this one just solves them itself and its never interrupted my usage.
It downloads torrents on average around 10meg a sec, but Ive seen it go up to 30 I think it was.
My downloads from them is my full 6meg a sec (2 threads), single thread streaming can get 4 but it might go above that as kodi has a say in that.
Not trying to sell anything ;P just trying to give you an honest view of what they are like.

EDIT: Oh and no plex, but you can stream from ftp/s and http.

          • @bukowski73: Oh and one last thing.
If you do get it and want to stream from http (its the fastest way for kodi), then you need to add this at the end or the url….

            |auth=digest

            https://kodi.wiki/view/HTTP
Drove me nuts in the past trying to figure that out ;P

  • So this isn't for PC?

Is this any different to something like the built in VPN you get with Opera browser?

    • +1

Yes, this works on the system, not just within the browser.

FREE version only allow you to use the Australian VPN . Doesn’t allow to change server to another country. You have to buy the Premuim version to be able to change the VPN location to a different country.

There is good deal for getting IP Vanish VPN on slick deals for US $17.40 (currently Aus$ is about $23 ) for 12 months Premuim subscription using code: GREEN40

    • My experience is you cannot access anything in China via HK that IP or VPN has been banned

      • If you have exact regions you want to access, you're always better off spending the $5 or so per month for each country you need, and renting a VPS.

        Just run wireguard and connect.

Literally a 15min setup DIY private VPN, in the country you needed.

        • Any links to where to sing up such VPS. Not sure what service to use

    • is the 10GB per month or once off?

      • says 10GB per month on the app.

  • I have a free version but not working on my ios…
