    Only iphone? :(

  • Interesting. How much would it cost with an iPhone 12 128gb or 256?

    • +1

Also keen to know. Could someone who is familiar with the ins and outs of these deals check the below:

      https://thegoodguys.sirv.com/Content/2021FY/Promotions/wk25/…

      Max early termination = $594 + Iphone 12 128 @ $1429 - 800 = $1223 … I guess not worth the credit check hassle for a $200 saving.

      Cost if seeing out contract = $1188 + Iphone 12 128 @ $1429 - 800 = $1817

      • +11

It says in that link you also have to pay a voucher reimbursement fee up to $500 in addition…

        • +3

Oh damn. Thanks for pointing that out.
I guess Telstra finally caught on and put and end to these …

          • +9

@fd9: So glad, tired of getting new iPhones all the time

          • -1

@fd9: That’s not correct. The voucher is from theGoodGuys and Telstra has nothing to do with the voucher. I had the same deal and got iPhone 12 Pro Max for $99 a month plan for 12 months and I just moved out of that contract to a month to month plan and all I had to pay Telstra was $594 early termination fee.

            • @Swisshardy: Oh wow. An Iphone 12 for $594 would be an amazing deal!
Interestingly, the JB similiar deals don't mentinon this voucher https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0024/9803/5810/files/BYO-M… , however, the good guys link mentions JB in the voucher along with good guys

But I am confused by the wording. It reads as if you have to pay part of that 800 dollar discount back depending on when you cancel? + The 594 …

            • @Swisshardy: $594 early termination fee + Iphone 12 128 @ $1429 - 800 voucher = $1223 + $500 voucher reimbursement fee = all you have to pay is $1723 for a $1429 phone

            • @Swisshardy: How long after you signed up did you move to month-to-month?

              • @ChatGPT-4: I did it the very next day as it’s done via the Telstra App and change of plan

        • Can't find details for this specific offer. But spoke with GG help desk and they said there are no conditions available online, It is an instore special only and would have to check in store for details. HYe did confirm this $800 rebate replaces the $500 voucher you usually get with the $99/m contract. So the Voucher reimbursement fee is likely to be up to a maximum of $800, not $500 for this deal if you want to terminate early.

        • Anyone who grabbed this deal and cancelled can confirm if they had to pay Voucher Reimbursement Fees apart from ETC of $594 ?

      • So if I don't get out of the contract, the monthly fee would be $1,817/12 per month?

      • Anyone who grabbed this deal and cancelled can confirm if they had to pay Voucher Reimbursement Fees apart from ETC of $594 ?

  • +8

    Voucher
For new Telstra customers signing up to a mobile plan, you may be eligible to receive a voucher to put towards the purchase of goods from JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys stores. It is not transferable or redeemable for cash (including any unused part). If you cancel, recontract or move to an ineligible plan then you will need to pay a Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee pro-rated against the remaining months on your Plan, the maximum of which is set out in the table above. This is in addition to any Early Termination Charges set out in the above table and accessory payments.

It’s about time. Was crazy they let the “shift sideways and bail” continue for as long as they did.

Made for some amazing deals at times, but never made sense that it was possible.

      • I feel the same way… but still didn't mind getting a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G for $594. Well, for free really because they still haven't sent me a bill since I signed up and cancelled on the 28th October.

        • I’m the same, coming up 2 months with no ETC bill yet

          • @bloom: Me 3, bit strange because I got the ETC when I did it with an s10 a year earlier…

        • I got lucky, Telstra had no coverage at mine so got my ETC waived and ended up with a Note20 for $299

  • +1

Thanks op. Does anyone know if they offer $10 credit just like jb?

    • +1

      Good question.

    • Yes they are currently doing $10/m cash back , $89/m. Just signed up

      • Great! Is it with $800 off iphone?

      • I signed up last month with Jb. Can that only be done during the signup process or can that be done anytime later?

      • +2

How do you go about getting the $10/m cash back?

  • Wish JB Hi-FI would offer this deal. I bought discounted gift cards, I'd like to use.

    • You could go in store and ask them. I was chatting to one of their staff a week or two ago and they seemed really open to negotiation. And given that TGG and JB are now owned by the same company, you could probably get something close to this deal, if not the exact same deal as JB have had it in the last couple of months as well.

      • Would definitely do that if there's $10 discount on top :)

    • Where can you buy discounted jb cards?

  • I just ported out 10 days ago, would it be worth trying to see if I can port back in? I know that it requires atleast 30 days but just checking if someone has done it before.

    • You can never had a problem even with less than 10 days.

      • +1

You can never have a problem…. Except the problem you may have when they say no, when they check and see you've ported out for less than 30 days.

        • +1

Well I didn't have any problems so far did that 3 times already from the past 2 years. Once was even just 2 days difference. Didn't even lost my telstra reward points. Not sure why neg.

          • @MDSUXKS: Perhaps the right phrase should have been: "sometimes you might get lucky and they don't check".

            Btw - I didn't neg you.

            • +2

@mandelbrot: That would be the correct phrase.

I have tried once at jb 14 days after port out and was not allowed. Based on my experience you will never be allowed, but sample size of 1

          • +1

            @MDSUXKS: The neg Nazis !!!

      • Oh thanks a lot. Will give it a go and see what they say.

    • Just did that today. Been ported out for 3 days. Move two numbers back to Telstra and onto these plans. The plan was actually $89 a month as there’s a $10 port in bonus.

  • Is the plan also eligible for the $10pm discount? I can't find a 150gb plan on the Telstra website.

    • Last time it was offered on Sundays

    • Yes

  • +7

I’m not trying to troll anybody, but I wanted to ask folks, are new phones really offering anything much over older phones from say a year, or even two ago? It seems like the latest mobile technology has become really expensive, but is it actually offering anything substantive now? Or is it just the want to own the latest thing?

    • +6

Some folks perhaps it's the timely upgrade for their 3+ years phone

      • That’s a really good point. Thanks for the reply. :) I kind of feel like an idiot for not considering that.

        • +1

Not trying to make you feel like an idiot, but my phone was an iPhone 5. Not even the S. it’s could do fingerprints or rfid or get even the OS 13, let alone 14. I would have kept it but I dropped it in water. Kept working for 6 months further but I the screen was too twitchy.
I miss that old bastard. Also I ended up getting a hand-me-down iPhone XR free, from someone who must have the latest. So you’re right, both groups exist.

          • @cynicor: I completely understand upgrading from an iPhone 5 to an XR, the iPhone 5 would practically be running out of security updates by now wouldn’t it? They were tough as hell though I agree, the 4 was a brick compared to a lot of the newer models.

Totally understand people upgrading to the latest model too, I mean who am I to tell people what to spend their money on. I suppose I was more just thinking are the newest models actually offering significantly upgraded tech from say a year or so ago.

Also, you didn’t make me feel like an idiot at all :) Thanks for the reply.

      • +1

My mum still uses a Galaxy S3 to this day

        • +2

Best phone I ever had that s3 only upgraded for s10+ recently and the bugger is sitting as a backup

          • @omgilia: It's hanging onto life by a thread, she's had it for 6 or so years

    • +3

I switched from my 11 Pro Max 256GB to a 12 Pro 256GB. The camera is quite a decent step up, but otherwise the phone doesn’t feel much different.

I like the slightly more compact size, and don’t feel like I’ve given up much in the way of screen real estate.

Part of why I made the change was I was able to get $1300 for the 11 Pro Max, so change over was about $550.

      • +2

Fair enough. Nice on getting a decent return for the older phone. iPhones do hold their value pretty well. Thanks for the reply. :)

      • -5

Lol you spent $550 for (almost) exactly the same phone? Reviews say the camera upgrade is hardly noticeable from the Pro lines?

        • +4

I agree it's not much of an upgrade but he's hardly thrown away $550. He has a more valuable asset which he'd be able to sell for hundreds more in the next years for the next upgrade. And the "LOL" stuff…. Yuck.

    • +1

      5G

      • 5G seems like it will be a game changer. So yeah that makes sense, but that being said, personally I wouldn’t probably utilise the benefits to pay for access to 5G just yet. Then again, considering how shitty NBN is, for me at least on FTTN, 5G would be game changing for businesses and what not. Thanks for the reply :)

    • +3

I personally think if you have iPhone X or newer, the experience wouldn’t be much difference. Sure, the camera and chipset would be better but that’s about it.

      • +1

I was thinking much the same, but I haven’t kept up with the technology so I don’t really know anymore to be fair. The cameras seem to keep getting better, however I would think for most people it’s not going to make that much of a difference. Thanks for the reply :)

      • I move from x to 12 pro Max and yeah that’s essentially about right.

If I just changed my battery in the X then yeah it’ll probably feel like a new phone.

Having said that the camera quality is definitely noticable.

    • +1

Ill give you my point of view.

      I bought a iPhone 12 Pro Max for $1849.

      I was upgrading from a Galaxy S10e
The iPhone offered really good battery life and has really good resale value.
Within 2-3 years, I can sell it for at least $600 or more.

However, used iPhone 11 Pro Max go for around $700-$1100 at the moment depending on the condition.

After comparing a mate’s 11 Pro Max and my 12 Pro Max, there is very little difference overall.
The only reason I bought this phone was because it was my first time buying a brand new phone. It was not the wisest purchase.

However, especially in the iPhone range, there is a substantial difference form 2018 to 2019.

So the best way to buy your phone is to recognise which flagship offers the biggest improvement over the previous years phone and then go from there.

      • +1

Fair enough. That’s a pretty sensible way of looking at new phones I’d agree. Also it seems like most people are only buying latest phones when they’ve got a much older phone that they’re upgrading from, also seems like a lot of the phones aren’t being bought on plans either, which would probably encourage people to just keep perpetually upgrading, but maybe if there’s not a huge difference in phone tech people will just let the contract expire and then go month to month. Nothing wrong with people buying the latest devices though, if you’ve got the money, it’s just good that there’s a decent second hand market so the phones are not just getting thrown away. Thanks for sharing your point of view :)

    • +1

My Huawei mate 10 still going strong after 3+ years. Dropped it 100x smashed screen also drop in water few times. Not upgrading till it dies, I'm hoping another 2 years, battery still holds up like day 1.

All these new phones so expensive but doubt they'll be much better than what I'm already using

      • +1

That’s probably the most sensible approach for most users. Use it until it dies and a new one is absolutely necessary. I think most consumers won’t be able to notice the actual difference, or really be able to utilise the difference in camera quality between say a single generation of phone. New phones are becoming more expensive, even considering inflation I’d agree. Newer phones are likely to be better, in terms of raw power, and particular features such as better cameras, and processing. But, I think the difference is that many people just won’t notice the difference. But I hope that you’re phone keeps on ticking along, and thanks for your thoughts :)

    • +1

It's marketing. Always has and always will be. FOMO / keeping up with the Joneses is what the latest phone is about. That and driving a Ford Ranger / Hilux. (rofl).
I cringe when I look at the price of the latest phones. It's utterly ridiculous. $2k for a phone?! Geezus..
In fairness, if you're still rocking an iPhone 5-8 it's a reasonable upgrade if you're doing it every few years. Kinda wish they never got rid of the damn home screen button!

      • I’d agree that’s definitely a part of it. A lot of industries do the same thing, like with cars (as you say), fashion, tech in general, or new housing to a degree. I mean, if iPhone wasn’t a thing would Apple still even exist? They depend I think a lot on moving new iPhones. Google has their finger in a lot of pies, not just hardware, so if that went pear shaped, you know I think that they’d still be okay-ish. With Apple though? I think they’d find things very hard going, particularly because so many of their others products are tied to the iPhone. The watch. The earbuds. I mean even the iPad can’t really function as a mobile phone, so to speak- in terms of form factor. So they have a really strong motive to keep making iPhones very attractive.

But yeah $2000 for a phone is getting really expensive.

I actually think getting rid of the Home Screen button was a good move, mainly because they were prone to failure after time, and thus ended up costing the consumer to repair. Because that button was so much, as opposed to say the power or volume buttons, it was always kind of susceptible to some failure.

        Thanks for your reply :)

    • Same as laptop price I guess. Lotta of them with price tag above $1K now.

  • The iPhone left amount can be paid with gift card? Thx

    • I don’t see why not.

    • That's what the majority of ozbargainers doing with their scores of discounted giftcards

      • Great Thx. Not too sure if worths to upgrade from a iPhone xr to a iPhone 12 mini.

    • Yes

    • My local JB said this deal is only for TGG so no dice there

  • ported from Telstra a few days ago. Hope this deal comes back next month.

    • I ported to Vodafone 3 days ago. Just went back to Telstra today with this deal. Didn’t even ask me about days or anything.

  • So am I correct you have to buy the phone outright as this is a BYO plan.

    • Yes. They will give you an $800 discount on any iPhone RRP. For instance, you get the iPhone 12 pro max 128g for $1049 +$100pm.

  • Will Telstra price match this with their price match within 7 days thing? I have a 12 Pro Max arriving any day now, probably after Sunday tho.

    • +1

Don’t see how that would work; you’re technically buying the phone at RRP from GG.

      • That's true. Plus it's too late to port in.

  • +7

Works out to be $388 for the contract over the 12 months if you were going to purchase a new iPhone Pro (or Pro Max) 128gb outright anyway.

    iPhone Pro
    $1699 (RRP) -$800 voucher
    = $899 + $1188 (cost of 12 month contract)
    = $2087 - $1699 (original cost of phone)
= $388 (or $32.33 per month) for 150GB each month

If you use the Ozbargain's favourite Telstra network pre-paid sim, the $300 Boost which is regularly on "sale" for $240, this plan is $148 more expensive but you also get 150GB each month rather than the 300GB to use for the whole 12 months (25GB per month).

    • +1

The only way to make the numbers work for me would be if it could replace the NBN connection.

150GB is 50 hours of HD Netflix, so for a a single per who does not watch tons of TV, that could work.

      • That's assuming you don't play any games or watch HD YouTube too as they can chew a lot of data.

        • Plus you supposedly get 5g with the deal.

      • As long as you're only watching hd then you're fine. If you watch 4k then no chance. We don't watch that much TV but our family are still using about 325gb per month.

  • +1

I spoke to JB about their deal when it was on but my boost 12 month data is still chugging away probably for 1-2 months

He basically said the deals they advertise can be picked up any time if you just ask

  • Is it worth it if you normally only use a $39 plan?

    • -1

Nah imo, $60/mth will be a huge gap

  • Can I upload my movies and ebooks and stuff to an iPhone and download apps off GitHub and 3rd party stores yet?

    • Yes, yes, don't know about stuff, no, no.

  • Got excited then noticed the 'i' before the phone
