The SKYDD wood treatment is pretty good for chopping boards.
And JUST as I'm about to redo my kitchen, perfect timing!
Up to , such dirty word 🙄
yea i hate those words….
Agreed. A good soul could scrape that page into a spreadsheet to sort and filter by discount.
Started it here.
Anyone interested, pls feel free to chip in—the sheet is open for editing.
All their products are massively overpriced in the first place (especially in Australia) so it's not a discount at all it is just bringing the prices down to significantly overpriced.
You think IKEA is overpriced? Where are you shopping?
A kallax cube shelf with doors will cost you $604. $604 for MDF, chipboard and laminate. It will look nice for 5 years. It will fall apart after 15 years. You could build it out of solid timber for that. You could pay someone at your local woodies or men's shed to build it for you for a bit more. And that would last a century at least.
But sure piss your money away on ground up protected forests and glue because it's convenient.
care to share your local woodies that can build it for a bit more? I'm guessing 800 ish then for solid timber? I'm interested
@oranglama: You don't want to pay long distance moving costs. Just find your nearest woodworking group and or men's shed. (Join yourself if you have any interest in learning (and to get a better deal.)) If you live in the city and its all hipsters who want to charge you a fortune, start heading out to the suburbs and the country near you. Try to find retired guys.
@bargain huntress: I don't live in the city and my local woodies wants thousands compared to ikea's hundreds, I've used ikea bed frame for almost 10 years without problem, surviving 2 disassembles, so I guess buying from ikea twice for 20 years still costs me less than my local woodies lol. YMMV.
Don't know if joining group would be best for me, what if I don't like the end result?
@oranglama: I guess you have upmarket woodies?
Remember too that plywood is significantly cheaper than timber and still better than MDF.
As for joining: If you learn to make it yourself your only cost is materials and membership.
@bargain huntress: I dont know, thats why I was asking for example of cheap ish local woodies, because i've never seen one, if they exist then i'm happy to pay 20%-30% more than ikea, but not 300%.
And no i'm not planning on making it myself.
@oranglama: But the point is to go local. What's the point of me telling you my local which is probs on the other side of the country?
Did you really contact your nearest this morning or are you BSing? Anyway try the next closest.
Also actually why not 300%? I mean $600 that lasts 20 years adds up to $3000 over a century. Vs $1800 or even $2400 that lasts 100 years and becomes a family heirloom and possibly appreciates or at least retains significant resale value. It still would make more sense financially in the long term. Not to mention environmentally.
@bargain huntress: Wow dude chill, why would i lie about it lol. i think everyone knows that solid timber is expensive, and i didnt say this morning did i?
Well thats your preference but i like to replace a few things after 5 ish years so not 300%, i agree that some people appreciate the value but not me. Anyway you started with 'a bit more', thats what i'm after, if it's 300% more that i wouldnt have asked.
@bargain huntress: Doesn't matter how "local" you go, there's no way you're getting shelves made by a local chippy for less than $1,000. The cost of labour in Australia is just way too expensive. I've even tried some of the "locals" that post on local Facebook groups & Marketplace looking for "after hours" cash work.
And the "make it yourself" argument is complete BS. There's no way anything I made myself is going to look half as professional as something I bought from Ikea. Let alone the fact that I'd need to buy all the tools etc.
You could pay someone at your local woodies or men's shed to build it for you for a bit more.
When you say "a bit more", do you actually mean double or triple the price of the IKEA ones?
Also it would help to put it in the right context by telling us your locality and distance from the capital city..
Yes IKEA here is overpriced, but even more are all of its competitors.
@leiiv: that's why just about every piece of furniture i own came from classifieds. i have very little money. yet nearly all my furniture is solid timber or mostly timber.
If you buy things, second hand, from places like Op Shops and, perhaps, classifieds you might get better, and cheaper, but you still have to get it home. The advantage of IKEA is flat pack delivery and, relatively, cheap for new. We only have a couple of IKEA things because they aren’t solid wood. We have a room divider and a sofa couch ( which we got for, under,1/2 price in the scratch and dent area). The sofa is, surprisingly, good because it is simple to convert into a bed and, with the addition of a topper, it is pretty comfortable to sleep on. Great for guests.
Generally we look for scratch and dent areas, outlet places, OP shops etc to minimise costs.
To answer your question i do most of my furniture shopping on gumtree. I can buy something used that is mostly or completely solid timber for the same price or even less than I can buy new some manufactured wood and veneer or flimsy thin pine crap they have at ikea.
P.s. Sorry if my replies sound rude. I really dislike IKEA. It's directed at them not you.
Lots of kitchen cabinets reduced.
