Wanikani Annual Sale - US$199 (~A$264) Lifetime Membership

110

Japanese Kanji learning website Wanikani is having its annual big sale right now and it's life time membership is now $US199, US$99 off it's usual price. Monthly and annual memberships are available but not at a discounted rate.

I've used it quite a bit and found it's a fantastic tool for learning kanji.

From the website:
"WaniKani is a Japanese-kanji-and-vocabulary-learning web app with a simple goal: teach you most of the ~2,000 jōyō kanji (meanings AND readings) as well as ~5,000 vocabulary in 1–2 years.

By using spaced repetition, mnemonics, interleaving, and more, we've put together one of the fastest and simplest systems for people who want to learn how to read Japanese."

  • I bought the lifetime membership last year - I use to spend ~1.5hours a day on it on my daily train commute into work. Started working from home when covid hit I didn't dedicate as much time to it and started getting overwhelmed, I paused it thinking i'll start again when i go back to the office. I haven't been back in 8months…

It's pretty easy to get overwhelmed and burn out if you don't put some limits when you are starting out. Unfortunately this isn't obvious at the beginning and only becomes an issue a few months down the line when you start getting later level reviews.

I've been using WK for about 5 years, and have restarted about 3 times in that time (level 30 was as high as I got) due to life getting in the way. I restarted again earlier in the year, and am now limiting myself to 5 new lessons a day. It's very slow going but it also takes the burden of having to spend a huge amount of time every day (which I think would be better spent on other areas of learning anyway).

I just wish I'd bought lifetime previously, as I'm sure I've paid it a couple of times over by now.

      • Yeah I might actually restart again once I go back to the office next month. Being away from it for so long I've forgotten a lot of the things especially the kun and on readings.

I got to level 35, but I went full out and tried to learn new things became available and like you said I started to struggle later on with the high levels. I tried to pace myself from 30 onwards but it was too late and the reviews were just too much and as soon as dedicated less time it was it game over.

I'll pace myself from the start now and maybe one day i'll finish it.

There is always going to be a wall to learning. You can do it! Get back on the SRS train.

Im level 51 now and Ive been wanting to quit, as my grammar studies suffer doing wanikani for 2 hours a day. I've got the time. Im going to add Todai NHK news easy to my study to increase my reading speed. That has a rolling discount, i think the best is about $14 for lifetime. Its an android app (not sure about apple).

And ditto, wish i bought the lifetime, this is the 5th year ive paid annual subscription. Doing 200 reviews a day and about 40 new lessons a week on a good week. 5200 burned.

  • considering this is ozbargain, YSK anki is free

Big tip: make sure you're also doing KaniWani

    https://kaniwani.com/

    • Before I register, can you please explain what kaniwani is about? It has nothing on the website that explains it

There's a little question mark button which says:

        What’s this all about then?

KaniWani is a companion website to WaniKani, an SRS tool for kanji and vocabulary memorization.

We felt that WaniKani helped a lot with being able to recognize and read Japanese, but didn’t help enough when trying to recall or reproduce words without the visual cue of seeing kanji.

KaniWani attempts to bridge that gap by quizzing you from English to Japanese using your WaniKani vocabulary, forcing you to do the opposite of what you are used to.

          Thanks!

  • Looks like its not half price for the annual subscription, its $89. Usually everything is halfprice during this time period.
