What's Your Guilty Purchase for 2020?

So, 2020 has been a crazy year. Mask wearing, social distancing, wallets tightening, lock downing. What has your guilty purchase been for this year? Any regrets?

For me I bought myself and my kids a second hand Nintendo 3DS each and I've been going nuts modding them and playing all sorts of games that I totally missed out on (my last handheld was in the GBA era). It's been lots of fun - no regrets.

What about everyone?

    • Hey! Can I ask where you got these retail second hand?

Realised in April that travel OS was off the cards for a while.
Decided to bring forward OZ caravan travel and pulled the trigger on a new 4wd and caravan, about 2 weeks before the rest of Australia decided the same thing and the prices went up! 😁
While we waited for delivery (slow and delayed in COVID-19 year) we brought forward heaps of home projects.
Now have travel set up and house sorted. Probably saved conservatively $10 on car/van by moving 2 weeks earlier which pretty well pays for the home stuff.
A bit over home projects now though…….but starting to enjoy travelling around 👍

    • What 4wd did you get? Liking it? Any regrets or wishing you got a different one?

  • Almost purchase: Ticket to China, venture into Vietnam, over to Thailand, then back home.

  • A Pulsar watch from Starbuy. I now have a dozen in various states of repair.
With another cheapo Naviforce in transit.

    customised number plates
so not needed, but I like them haha

A custom plate that says corollachick??

      • corolla days are long gone haha

got a simpsons inspired one lol

Replaced my gaming pc with a gaming laptop. Can game when I go on interstate trips now! No regrets.

    • +1

I did the same thing last year, replaed my whole rig with an Aero 15X, no regrets! :D

      • Only thing I regret is that I didn't do it sooner. My new beast is an Aorus 5

I regret not buying shares of certain companies in massive numbers. I instead purchased a moderate quantity, and regret it now. The covid slump was the perfect time for investors to stock up, but it's easier said now. That's the main difference between a below average Joe like me and a legend like Soros.

      Hindsight … is annoying.

Bought a fancy leather jacket. It's sooooo soft. I've been looking for a few years though, so no regrets from me. I haven't worn it yet though.

    • Good flex.

    • lol gotta live somewhere….

  • I regret not buying loads of woolies eGift cards while the discount was still there.

Thought it would be back soon in 2021. Now it looks like it won’t.

    • +1

      Still available via NRMA

    • Still available for us on our work discount platform, no doubt it will be back on other platforms

  • The PS5 lol. I got caught up in the hype and then it fall on me hard. All my consoles are exclusive boxes but the PS Studio games are focused mostly on narrative driven games (I dont like comp online multiplayer.) Which I like but I've played the games that have the 4k60fps patch and there arent many.

Note: My PC is pretty high end so I dont play any other third parties on consoles. PC, PS3/4/5 and Switch for the win!

    • You could double your money if you sell your PS5 now. Bargain!

  • g29 steering wheel and stand, 450 all up lol. honestly ive used it 2 hrs in the last 10 days coz it does not feel realistic, like its really hard to turn the wheel. and when i turn the setting resistance down, it still feels odd and not realistic when the car sliders around, its not like that in real life.

  • I bought a 2 terabyte Samsung 860 EVO SSD for my computer. It's a very expensive SSD, but the performance is great. I'm migrating all my favourite video games on it.

    • Hope it was on sale!

      • I got it from Umart for $358. No sale.

A new 55" Smart TV on Gumtree for $20.00
Man I felt the guilts mounting it on my bedroom wall ! 😛
Not the sort of guilt I think you are referencing but guilt all the same.
    Tsk.

    • why did he sell it for $20? Did not know how to unbox it?

    • Did you check it for secret cameras or something 😬

    • +7

Does it play Macca's breakfast menu all day?

    • Sounds like it was my TV which some scammers bought and paid with counterfeit $100 bills on gumtree.

      • Do you live in Kalgoorlie ?
        If so… Good detective work.

$1k catback exhaust modification for my car (slightly louder)

    • Never regret buying car mods ;D

      • Only regret it isn't loud enough!

  • A $5000 Go Kart with a Rotax Evo (It also came with a box trailer which I sold), that I will most likely only use 4-5 times a year. Engine is only 2 months old when I got it off the previous owner. This is a 50/50 half regrets and half no regrets.

  • $5000 TV and $3600 macbook

    • Which TV? and why?

      • +3

Sony OLED. Partner is demanding and of a certain ethnicity that came from a sandy place and loves to show off.

        • that cracked me up

  • Bought second hand gaming pc and 27”1440/144hz screen for 1k total. Screen now wont work on dp port, only hdmi. And I am constantly wanting to buy new system :( should have gone for new tech instead of saving here and there.

    Hibachi from coles.

    • +1

After 6 months deliberation, a Hibachi from Amazon delivered 1 day before the Coles offer 🙁

    • Masterchef inspired? Did you get a Crockpot as well? :P

  • +1

It has been quite a year of useless spending. I'm glad to see that I'm not on my own in wasting hard earned finances, but my shame roll is quite extensive: I've bought a new 85" TV to go with the PS5 and a commodore64 remake. A Kitcheaid mixer to make lockdown dough, an instantpot and a nutribullet. I topped it all off with a Marcus Aurelius denarius coin that I keep as a reminder that worldly possessions are meaningless and will not be what I think or care about when I die.

    • Don’t you like the TV? Which brand is it?

      • +2

I've been happy with every single item purchased (the TV is a Sony X90H), but that doesn't make them any less "guilty purchases" because I realise full well that I don't need any of them to be happy.

    • How ironic haha

  • +5

Decided I wanted to learn how to weld. Purchased a welder, plasma cutter and air compressor. All still sitting in the box months later. At some point 2020 will stop throwing crap at me and I'll have a chance to try them out. :)

  • An eReader.

I'd like to justify the cost by completing some lesser-known manga series' and books not available at my local library.

    • Were you the one who recommended Kobo libra? I ended up getting one and loving it so far :)

      • I think I did. Glad to hear, it's so worth it!

  • HP Omen15 gaming laptop.

    • Positive ? Any regrets?

Bought a very sharp Japanese Knife for cutting sashimi. Definitely a guilty purchase and at over $200, I should probably hand in my ozbargain pass.

    • +2

A sharp knife is always useful… Where do you buy fish fresh enough for sashimi?

      • +2

In Brisbane, the Sunnybank Fish Market on 2 Zamia St, Robertson QLD 4109 has a nice selection.

    Got my self a Motorcycle.

    • Eyyyyyy me too, but pre-covid… And then I didn't need it due to wfh lol. What'd you get?

      • +2

I got it in February. It came in handy in the initial months of COVID as that was my only escape from home. I have good back roads fairly close to where I live. I got myself a Yamaha V-star…. and then a Honda Grom. lol. What did you get?

        • +1

I got mine in Feb too haha. A cbr300, I'm going to sell it to get more of a retro bike (maybe an interceptor 650) soon tho. Vstar is a cool bike. Groms are super weird haha.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Interceptor is a nice bike. Good luck with the search. Perhaps wait till after Christmas, if you are planning to get a used bike. I was also looking at a Classic 500 but didn't proceed with the purchase.

Haha, the Groms are fun little bikes. I just got it to goof around the neighborhood, to run errands etc.

          • @[Deactivated]: Groms are too cute

I’ve bought quite a lot of guilty pleasures this year. It started with telling myself it was good for the economy, or to take advantage of great sales but altogether it was a bit ridiculous. Highlights were:

    A 75” tv
    2 x coach handbags
    A MacBook Air
A $2k home office set up
A lot of expensive makeup and makeup brushes
    Copic markers
    Philips hue lights

I don’t really regret them though, except for the tv and all of the trash food.

    • +1

I'll take the TV if it'll make you feel better 🙃

    • +1

      My dude…

Hope your income is massive bc if I did this, I would have basically have saved nothing this year.

      • Hahahaha thanks. I will admit that I haven’t saved nearly as much as I would have liked this year. Need to change that next year.

I did get a new job recently that had a significant pay rise, but I also bargain a lot so not as bad as it sounds 😛

        Example:

75”tv = tcl brand with $500 gift card (given as a farewell work present)
2 x coach hand bags = bought on Black Friday sale from the US for $340 AUD combined
MacBook Air = salary sacrificed through work
WFH set up = tax deductible
Copic markers = bought on a really good deal second hand. Spent about $120 total.

        • Hahaha phew. That's a relief, actual good bargains by the looks.

  • Two PP watches. Not for me. But well worth it. Hopefully it will be treasured.

    • What model? Gifting a PP sounds insane. You must do really well.

      • Poor man's PP. Just the Calatrava. For the kids.

        • aren't these start at 15k or something? They are no Nautilus but 30 grand for gifts are quite incredible

          • @Punknerd: They were a bit over $20k each. Like how clean they look though. Definitely prefer it over the Rolex.

  • +1

Got into cycling during stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne. Purchased a road bike for 4k then a dualy for 3.5k. Have zero regrets but I have found out bikes are like cars it's a massive money pit always looking for upgrades.

    • +1

n+1 = the correct number of bikes to have.

*n = the number of bikes you currently own

    • As with cars, get out of forums, subreddits, sales websites and review sites.

The best bike/car/gym/gaming pc you can buy is the one you already have. Get out there and ride!

Bought around $7500 worth of LEGO this year.

Value? Yes, Time with my son. And we didn’t travel so had funds to enjoy

    • Only downside is they take up so much room after you assemble them, and you run out of places to put your pieces…

      • If a person spends the value of a small second hand car on LEGO, my guess is that there is space to display it after assembly.

        • Haha not really a big house, just had an enjoyable lockdown.,,

  • A $500 Dell monitor and 2x $250 Dell monitors to replace existing 1080p monitors. Was also going to buy a Kogan dishwasher because time is money but family opposed. Perhaps for the better since I should get a better brand if I actually were to buy it.

Dishwashers are the best. We installed one when we did kitchen remake and we love it!

    • +1

Dishwashers are life. It’s like having a butler. Pair that with a robot vacuum and you’re set.

  • bought a 3600x and b450 for 300 on fb marketplace…been sitting in the closet for 1 year now..didnt get around to finish the build cause the partner is barking in my ear everytime i want to finish the build, but she has no problem buying 4-5 pair of shoes a year… :( :(
