  • Many thanks. Installing it now.

    • +2

Cheers, I think it's a good move by Adobe. Get people used to Lightroom. Once someone has 1000s of photos in an LR catalog, hard for them to move elsewhere when a few more features are needed.

  • +6

Great, now everyone can beautify their MS Paint diagrams.

    • +1

I look forward to the traffic diagrams with better contrast.

  • Anyone used this who can comment on its features, compared to the full, paid one?

    • +1

Looks pretty good. Quite a lot of the editing sliders are available but a few of the more advanced ones are locked.

    • +5

i'm pleseantly surprised, a good amount of features are available. All of the Light, Colour and Detail sliders are available. No Geometry (aspect and perspective sliders), or Effects (clarity and dehaze etc). Not sure how long this will last though, Adobe are sneaky mf.

edit: haven't tried yet but i saw hdr and batch editing isn't available which will be annoying.

  • +7

    Desktop means Windows apparently.

    • +6

      Always has been

      • -4

Only for the last two decades.

  • How does it compare with Lightroom 6 (classic version) which is not available to purchase anymore.

    • +1

Looking at the comparison chart. The starter plan removes a lot of the key features that make LR better than other alternatives. Such as batching editing, merging panoramas/HDR photos, and vignetting.

Only the basic light, colour, and sharpening tools are available.

It's still great for those who don't have LR6 classic or those who have the latest gear. As iirc. Adobe no longer updates LR6 classic and so new profiles, etc. can only be obtained via newer versions.

      • Would you recommend I buy the full version if I am just starting out?

        I want to buy a fujifilm x100v.

        • +1

A couple of useful free and open source applications are DigiKam and Darktable. Worth checking out until you understand if you need to pay for anything beyond them :)

          • @mrbargainz: Did darktable work well? I tried it once but it was really slow. Had to wait sometime after clicking anything.

            • @bazingaa: I haven't noticed much lag in it at all really. How long ago did you try it? I wonder if I've used the newer versions and they've improved it since you tried.

Once you get the hang of it, there hasn't been much/anything I wanted to do that I couldn't.

I prefer the workflow now that I have with importing and culling with DigiKam, then editing with Darktable. It's quick and I can install them on whatever machines I want, as they're both free.

If I can't get the image to where it needs to be with them.. it's not Darktable, it's my photography skills, or editing skills that lack! Haha..

        • CaptureOne has a free version for Fujifilm, I'd recommend checking it out too.

          • @Not Applicable: I actually didn't mind that one, but after its database corrupted on a couple of different occasions, I don't trust it anymore. It failed in the middle of a trip overseas.

Even less trust after researching it when trying to fix it, as it's it's definitely not uncommon for it to happen with them from what I read.

        • Start with Lightroom CC Starter. It looks good and worth a try at that price!

In addition Capture One Express is also free for Fuji, Sony and Nikon.
          https://www.captureone.com/en/products-plans/capture-one-exp…

Some photographers prefer their raw processing. You'll find a Capture One leaflet in the Fujifilm X100V box.

        • If you're just starting out. This free starter plan should work for you.

The advanced features are for enthusiasts and pros. Although, in saying that. Depending on how passionate you are about photography. You'll outgrow those basic features in a few months. But at least, you'll save a few months of subscription fees.

And if you do decide to take a break from photography or not need to do the advanced adjustments. You could always just revert back to the starter plan and everything will still be in working order.

I've tried pretty much all the alternatives others have mentioned. None of them come close to LR.

LR's catalog and UI is just so much superior to the alternatives.

If CaptureOne is free, I would suggest you could try give that a whirl to see if it's your cup of tea or not. (keep in mind, the last time I tried it. they didn't have the capability of panorama/hdr merging. And this is using the full blown version. Not the trimmed down version that you get free with camera brand XYZ.)

          • @[Deactivated]: Thank you for the info! I will definitely give the free one a go.

Will buy the camera in the coming weeks. Are accessories necessary? Like the UV filter and screen cover and stuff?

            • @dabs: It really depends.

If you can get the accessories cheap as part of the initial purchase. You can have a think about it. The only semi-useful accessory is namely a spare battery and may be charger if it doesn't come with a separate charger.

Screen cover is nice. It's relatively cheap and worth it imho. (Just buy some cheap $2 ones off ebay, it's the same thing)

In terms of the other accessories, it depends on two things:
1 - What kind of photography are you looking to do? This will decide on whether you need them or not.
2 - Your budget and also the price of the accessory.

A couple pieces of advice from personal experience:
              1) At the peak of my photography enthusiasm, I wanted to buy every accessory. Now, my passion has pretty much disappeared. I'm glad I didn't buy all the various accessories.
              2) When you are looking to buy accessories. Try get the official ones. It's much easier to offload after you get bored of it. And for stuff like tripods, get reputable ones. This will not only help with reselling, it will provide a significantly better experience than getting some cheapo flimsy tripod. Weird as it sounds, I still feel joy just picking up my manfrotto tripod after 3+ years. While, the cheapo brand one I resold before I bought the manfrotto. I wanted to break that thing after a couple of weeks!

              • @[Deactivated]: Mainly just street photography. I am thinking of getting the Fujifilm x100v. Something I can take with me lightly and take photos when I am out with my friends.

The camera can be bought for as low as ~$1600. So I am hoping to get everything under $2000.

                • @dabs: If you're doing street photography. Then you don't need all the gadgets and the free basic LR starter plan will do. As you won't be needing the panorama/HDR stitching capability and usually with street photography, you won't want to edit the photo too much beyond may be turning the photo into a black and white photo. And you shouldn't be worrying about vignetting as the X100V has a fixed lens.

Just checked out the dpreview of the camera. It says weathersealing is optional. You may want to see how much the accessory costs to make it weathersealed.

You won't need ND filters, etc. as those are used for doing long exposure shots. Street photography is all about taking fast quick shots that capture the moment. Alas, tripod is probably not very useful either.

If I was in your shoes, I would look at getting the following:
                  - memory card (if I don't already have any that is compatible or of a decent quality/speed)
                  - filter to make the camera weathersealed
                  - cheap screen protector off ebay
                  - leather case

                  lower priority
                  - spare battery
                  - charger

                  • @[Deactivated]: Really appreciate the help! Will get the accessories following your priority list! Thanks.

                    • @dabs: Happy to help.

Good luck and happy snapping. :)

                  • @[Deactivated]: Great suggestions. I would consider a UV filter for the lens protection, not sure if included in your list.

      • So more like a glorified Irfanview? I missed the deadline to buy Lightroom 6, tried different free ones but they are slow or not feels like the lightroom.

        • +1

I still use LR3 - I guess that counts as "classic" line. I was planning to get the newest version, but you're saying there's no such thing anymore?

Does that mean there's only CC, subscription-based version? I once installed it by mistake and as far as I remember, it was heavily integrating with the cloud and felt lousy in general, compared to "classic".

Please correct me if I'm wrong! Otherwise what are LR alternatives these days?

          • +1

@pizzaguy: yes, the last Lightroom with perpetual license was LR6 (6.14 as I remember). I missed that and now they don't sell it anymore. Now they only sell subscription-based version.

I am also looking for the perfect alternative. There are few software like RawTherapee, Dark-tables but they don't feel like LR.

            • @bazingaa: Subscription would be fine if you could pay per month, but IIRC you have to commit to 6 months at a time. As a hobbiest I tend to go through spurts of activity - and I don't want to pay a subscription for something I might only use once every 3 months

              • @macrocephalic: I believe you can buy monthly. But iirc they jacked up the price for the photography plan significantly. So it's not very casual friendly. I guess this new free starter plan is more or less for those.

You don't really need the advanced features unless you're an enthusiast or pro.

  • Be interested to know if merging multiple shots from bracketing is possible with this?

Edit: nope, appears to be a premium function!

  • This sounds like it's less featured than the free android app. If you don't want all the LR features then get one of the better free options.

    • Any recommendations for other free options?

  • +1

The good old lock into the ecosystem strategy.

    • Too right! That's why Microsoft essential gave away Windows 10 for the first year or two. That gave all the pirates a chance to legitimise their licences, and then all those users were well & truly locked in for the long haul.

      • +1

There hasn't really been a viable alternative for many years (IMO). OSX is only on Apple devices, and even the most user friendly of the Linux versions will still feel very strange to a windows power user; people who just use a browser would manage, and people who are really into tech would learn, but people who sit in the middle would be frustrated.

  • Cheers OP, was contemplating Lightroom this is perfect for now

  • its a 7 day trial

    • For premium features. Starter plan has no expiry.

how do i get the normal basic program

        • +1

Did you click on "Start for Free" button under "Lightroom starter plan - Free"?

  • thank you!

  • noob question - where are the presets stored?

  • Can Anyone suggest a good free video editor (or even reasonably paid one)? 12-Year-old son wants to do Minecraft videos.

      Davinci resolve

HitFilm by FXHome is free and a lot easier learning curve than Da Vinci.
      https://alternativeto.net/software/hitfilm/

Technically speaking HitFilm is a non-linear timeline based editor vs DaVinci's Node based editing, which is hard to learn, though very powerful once learnt. HitFilm has many special effects options but these are all optional. There are lots of videos on YouTube on his to use it.

If he just wants something really simple, maybe Camtasia Studio will do him.
      https://alternativeto.net/software/camtasia-studio/

If he's trying to record his gameplay, maybe OBS is with a look
      https://alternativeto.net/software/open-broadcaster-software…

      • Thanks @rygle. I will give it a go if it is a simple one to begin with. Ideally he wants to learn to put his own face video in the corner of Minecraft video but lets see if it is doable with these softwares.

        • OBS then

    • +1

I've been using Shotcut and (imo) its relatively easy to pick up? Its free

    • Or Videos in Win10 (search in start menu) , it is the easiest one for simple non-linear editing

  • If anyone is switching away from LR6 to this I am after a LR6 licence key.

Looking to upgrade from my current LR4.

  • +1

Does it allow you downgrade from subscription to this free version without creating a new account?

  • Thanks OP

  • *Lightroom Starter plan is limited to AU/NZ only, subject to availability.

For all those getting a redirect that's making the hyperlink disappear, here's the link to make it work. Enjoy -> http://creativecloud.adobe.com/apps/download/lightroom?promo…

EDIT: Just realised it was because I was connected to a VPN 🤦‍♂️

    • Thanks for this, was easily able to download, install and log in using my current adobe account

is there an end date to this deal?

  • Access Denied
You do not have access to this service.
Contact your IT administrator to gain access, or sign in with an Adobe ID.

What can I do to fix this?

    • Signed out and back in and that fixed it.

  • Strongly recommend people use Capture One over Lightroom.

  • I still use Picasa 3 (Yikes!) to manage my home photos from the last 19 years of digital photos. This is all the way from 2 megapixel cameras to todays latest phones and go pros (off the DSLRs, still locked into a canon 40D and waiting for mirrorless to drop further before I change the body)

Is light-room a good replacement for Picasa 3? I mean it is still by far the best lightweight desktop app I have ever used and it manages this library of 10's of 1000's of images across folders pretty well. Far superior to Google photos for organising. I also happen to have switched to an M1 Mac form PC, so need a lightweight tool for the Mac.

    Thx for advice.

  • Sadly, I think the free Starter plan is no longer available - unless it's hidden somewhere?

    • True. Looks like no longer offered. Expiring the deal.
