Whats The Most Expensive Thing You Bought but Never Used?

Whats the most expensive thing you bought and never used ie still brand new condition
(eg cant be an investment/decoration/backup or a gift to someone that hasnt been given)

for me it was a surface laptop discontinuation sale $1000 new
sat in my draw for 1 year still in the box as I already had a laptop that was 3 months old, but always wanted a surface badly

Subconsciously I'm hoping my laptop breaks or have a need to give it to someone

    $700 sony tv for me

    • +2

Same here, thought it would be a good idea to buy this a few years ago. Turns out I just don't watch enough TV.

      • +4

        My insurance.

      • I'm just wondering if there is some 'thing' u can plug and it displays date, temperature and a bunch of other things (traffic, news) for basically unused (but connected) TVs? google tv is a bit too expensive imho for that (and doesn't seem to have news, etc), but could be very useful to turn on in the morning, etc/

        • Kind of like https://dakboard.com

but perhaps a $20 hdmi dongle - without having to do anything except plug it in.

    • Wait, so you never watch TV or movies…?

      • +1

people have multiple TVs now. One person I know has their lounge TV unhooked from the electricity because they don't use it, but they use their bedroom TV all the time (every night).

I don't watch TV really at all - I spend more time on laptop watching movies (but I live a more portable lifestyle).

  • +23

I'm trying to think of one. Probably some power tools

PS I vote that all answers on this thread should come with some background - what did you buy, why did you buy, and why did you not use

    • +31

CTP, because it's compulsory, and I've never used it because I'm not a terrible driver.

      • -1

lucky third party is not compulsory in vic, dont have to get it.

        • +1

Hopefully you have comprehensive insurance, if not third party

        • +21

I'm pretty sure it is. It's called TAC and it's build into the Rego sold by VIC roads. Little different to NSW but still mandatory.

          • -8

@taker: Yes, but TAC is different to third party. TAC is to support individuals involved in road accidents, 3rd party property is for property damage.

            • +7

@cloudy: That's wrong mate CTP is for individual injury/death in the event of an accident

              • -3

                @justjack: That’s TAC in vic.

                You’re confusing states.

Third party insurance is for property of others, in vic.

        • +5

The 'third party' you are referring to is not compulsory in any state.
The CTP Scrooge McDuck is referring to is the TAC equivalent in VIC as you have mentioned below.
Two completely different things - which you have also mentioned lol.

    • If you exclude opening the box, got an Ozito router (+Ultra brand bit set), the grass trimmer kit, and the jet blower that have never seen any use yet.

Actually I'm wrong about the jet blower … that is still in the box :P

Perhaps this will be a familiar excuse: "oh it's cheap, and I don't have one so it'll probably come in handy"

      • Bosch router as well over here - and small inflatable sevylor fishing dingy.

    • I thought this was going to be me, but as soon as I moved into my first house, I started using my drill every weekend.

Haven't used my sander or "multi-tool" thingo, but the drill has been my best bargain yet.

PS4 - just did not have the time.

    • +5

I use my PS4 only for Streaming TV. Played only 1 game on it…and feel bad spending time gaming. I found other physical sporting hobbies

      • Out of curiosity, which game did you play?

        • BloodBorne.

          • @[Deactivated]: Went straight to the deep end did you?

            • +1

@TK Deadwalker: Yes. I never used a PS4 controller before that. It was incredibly difficult…hard to describe. However I finished it and was the best experience of my life.

      • +2

Me too. I bought Ps 4 only to play final fantasy 15 and VII.

    • +2

Same, brought a PS4 pro and GT Sport to relive childhood memories of GT/NFS on PS2. Played for 10mins and never used again…

      • +2

I still remember getting the original dual shock controller when the first GT came out. Good times!

    • Yep, I just use it for streaming netflix/prime/youtube since my TV isn't "smart" enough

      • +1

You do relaise a chrome cast does all that at a fraction of the price.

        • I bought the PS4 with the intention to play games but I guess I don't find it fun anymore.
I also have a Xiaomi MiBox for streaming stuff

        • Or amazon fire stick

          • @evgpek: Isn't that a fire hazard?

Dude wants to stream stuff, not burn the whole house down silly.

    • +14

It's used as a financial asset though.

    • +4

That’s brave taking a swipe at landlords. In Australia they’re sacrosanct.

      • -1

        How was it a swipe?

How do you know I'm not one? Maybe a house is the most expensive thing I bought and never 'used'.

        • Oh I was just making a joke about people negging the comment. Not a serious comment.

    $30 jumper
    .

    • +3

      $30 jumper leads!!! :)
Battery has never let me down.

  • Subconsciously I'm hoping my laptop breaks or have a need to give it to someone

Can be easily solved via an accident.

Its not her that got used :)

    • +1

      Did you keep the receipt?

    • +9

Melania is from Slovenia, not Russia.

      • -8

        thanks captain obvious

        • +2

captain obvious is also not from Russia

    • +2

here is my response : what is the thing you used but did not buy

      • +3

        username checks out…

  • +28

    Individual item:
Truly unused: Lego millenium falcon just sitting in the box - $830
Practically unused: Snap-on toolbox - $2200. Has a few things sitting in it but I never properly migrated my tools over.

If we're talking collections then I haven't had time to use 95% of my lego collection ($5k?) or 99% of my gaming collection ($25k?). My NAS and HDD's never got off the ground properly either (hardware issues requiring warranty claim) - $2200 there too.

Yeesh. I spend within my means but now I feel like I have a problem.. :/

    • +13

      Whoa. Thanks you for sharing.
The anxiety and buyer's remorse I'd have over that would be ridiculous.

    • +2

Lego millenium falcon just sitting in the box

      :o

    • +7

Truly unused: Lego millenium falcon just sitting in the box - $830

hmm that reminds me. Pretty sure I impulse bought the Lego Kwik-E-Mart set which I wanted to build at some point. At least leaving the Falcon mint in the box has some sense to it if you truly wanted to flip it at some point.

      β™« Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart … β™«

      • +9

        I doooooooooooooooo…..

    • +4

If the millennium falcon is a UCS/Limited edition then it's an investment and unopened makes it worth even more!

  • +59

Condoms - paying the price twice now.

    :
    .
    But totally worth it. :)

    • +9

      Condoms

This, but not by choice :')

      • There is a choice. Have you tried pull-out method. ;)

    • +11

Why do parents always have to add some variant of "But totally worth it" like if they're trying to convince themselves it wasn't a shit decision lol

      • +14

My son's favorite t-shirt says: "My parents are totally exhausted" - I am when the kids want everything immediately and incessantly, just as I've sat down to do something. But when they snuggle into my lap and ask me to read to them and are tired and want their favourite hold where I carry them over the shoulder so they can sleep as we walk back home, and when we share our love of things with them and learn about them and learn together as they grow into little individuals, it is totally worth it.

      • +6

They are suffering but are trying to convince you it's great so you end up suffering too…

  • +38

I bought an election, well, technically I installed an idiot in a powerful position but didn't use him. He was an idiot already destroying his country by himself.

    Jokes aside:

I have plenty of power banks, some of them used once just to make sure they are charging/discharging (working).

    • In Soviet Russia…

  • +24

Motorcycle. Paid $22,000 for it in late 2003. Rode it till the rego ran out (only about 1,200km). Did 3 track days on it after that and it's still sitting in my shed 16 years later and hasn't turned a wheel since about 2011.

    • Good luck with roadworthy.

I had to get one for practically the same scenario (8 years) and spent a good $4k just on fluids, hoses and rubber.

      • +3

It's a shame that I am going to have to restore a bike that has about 4,000 total km on it, but that is how it is looking like it is going to end up. But it is a Ducati, so it should be hella cheap to restore…. :/

    • +3

based on recent car/bike prices, it might have increased in price, and depending on the model , the model with low kms might have become rare as well!

      • That's what I am hoping. I'll fix it up in due time (too many other bike projects in front of it) and maybe at least almost break even on the purchase price.

    • +1

i love Ducati motorbike's especially the sound that they make - have always loved the old SS 750 & the SS 900 models. like Norton Commandos as well. and good luck to you anyway.

      • +1

As much as I love my desmoquattro, the 2 valve air cooled bikes is where the sound is at. Nothing sounds as awesome as the old desmoduo bikes.

    • it's almost certainly siezed by now :-(

      • Not a chance. It's been kept under cover, in a garage/shed and had a fresh oil change prior to the last track day I did and then it went into storage, so no chance of condensation in the oil./engine. It wont be seized, but things like the oil seals, radiator hoses and timing belts will all be "cactus". It's gong to need some work to get it going again, but it wont be seized.

        • I just picked up a bike that was garaged for 3 years, showing symptoms of seizure. Need to have a proper look though. Only done 11k kms and serviced regularly since 3 years ago, but won't start with a new battery. Planning on changing the oil, filter and some new plugs. Maybe sqimuirt some oil in the chamber prior to changing it.

Tried to put it in gear and turn the engine over but the back wheel just drags :(

You might also find the brake fluid has gone and affected the master cylinder and hoses. In my case it seems to have leaked onto the accelerator grip and seized that too

          • +1

            @Jackson: Ahhhhh… projects. :)

            • @pegaxs: At least these projects are the fun ones :-) as long as you get to ride it at the end

  • +11
    • +1

That would be a constant reminder due to its size!

      • +1

        Sure is…lol
My shins attest to that !

    • Man, I can relate to this one. I have a racing seat, Logitech Steering wheel (version before yours), and a buttkicker. I bought it in PS3 ERA, and hardly used it (did have some fun with NFS Shift). Last year I went to use it on PS4 with VR; turns out my wheel doesn't even work with PS4 now! I can get an adaptor, but it's not cheap, and I really should just sell the set now.

    • How much?

  • +1

Probably a 300 dollar pair of Adidas EQT sneakers I got 3 years ago. still sitting in box somewhere in the house.

    • still sitting in box somewhere in the house.

      Lol…u deserve a badge

  • +7

At work? $100k easy. All manner of endoscopes, radiograph sensors, computers, simulation models…

Heck can we include degrees? Cause that is easily more. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    • +3

      Arts degree?

      • +1

I don't have one but yes, that could have been.

      • endoscopes create some pretty hardcore art

        • +1

It was a million to one shot, Doc. Million to one!

    • +1

Oh man, I did a PhD instead of going into industry straight out of uni and earning between 300 and 500k in that time, not to mention the delayed increased earnings for another 5 to 10 years on top of that. And it’s completely wasted in my industry…

      • +2

What industry? I didn't even think doctors/dentists pull that much first year out of uni?

        • +21

          Only fans

        • +2

If they took 3 to 4 years to do the PhD, it's not unreasonable to expect they could have earned $80-$120k per year during that time so missed out on $300k+ total income.

          • @Dr No: Gee whiz, I always thought PHD candidates were living on scraps! :o

        • +1

I think he means total missed earnings opportunity across several years.

        • Guessing in the mines since he's in WA.

        • 5 years of not working in industry (in my case, engineering) adds up fast.

      • Structural engineer?

        • Hahahaha. In my experience they don't pull that much in.

  • +7

I'd say my Logitech G920 steering wheel….still got every intention of getting a sim rig for it but have had it at least 3-4 years without even plugging it in yet. Hardly even play my Xbox anymore but still want a Series X lol

Got a lot of shoes and clothes that I wear a couple of times and then the sit at the back of the cupboard…really should clean it out and give it all to Good Sammy's but I'm scared I'll just repeat the cycle and buy more stuff to fill the void.

    • Same the G27 for PC and its been in a box for 4 years now if not more. It got lightly used but now no space or anywhere to setup.
Same with the gaming PC I built for it around the same time, all this WFH means no space for my own stuff.

      • also same for your G27 @91rs. Would you consider selling it? lol
